Most interesting thing so far, announcers said he that he told them he never lifted weights here. He said he was in the best shape of his life after lifting weights in LA for 3 weeks, I guess this is when he played on the US team.

I find it strange that all athletes would not be required to lift weights. If done correctly, it would not limit their athleticism as the reason announcers gave for why one wouldn't lift weights. Especially when he was a beanpole when he first came to state. He was still great, but how much of an animal would he have been if he had strategically lifted for 4 years. If I was Stans, I would have a lifting program for all on the team.

there is not a good reason NOT to lift during the off-season or during the season.......

that the S&C for basketball is horrible. It's definitely on Stansbury to make a move in that regard if the current S&C coach is not getting it done.

Stans is the reason our players stay so thin. His philosophy is to keep guys lean. Everyone bitches about Akins, but he's just following orders. Akins disagrees with Rick and wants to bulk up our players, but Rick is the boss, so his opinion wins. It's well known Rick has protected players from Akins in the past when it came to lifting, or more specifically, the lack thereof.

That's 17-ing ridiculous. There is not reason not to have a D1 athlete in any sport on a legit S&C program. I'm not asking for a bball team full of linebackers, but strength is, BY FAR, one of our current and recent weaknesses. Skipping out on S&C just shows the guy is clueless.

Granted, if I'm JV, I'm taking the initiative to hit the weights on my own time if I think I'm a legit NBA prospect. Nonetheless, not asking the players to put on muscle and get stronger in a responsible way is doing a disservice to our players with a future beyond D1 basketball. How much higher do you think JV could be drafted if he weighed 235 vs his 210? It makes a difference.

Stan's desire to be a "player's coach" has gone too far.

I did not realize that Jarvis was a "worthless *****" for MSU. Tell me that was sarcasm...please.

I do agree that too many of our guys over the years have been rail thin and rarely put on any muscle. Anyone could see that. Stansbury definitely deserves some of the blame for that but I do have one question: how much time are basketball coaches given for things like strength training?

Also, Jarvis himself deserves some of the blame for having never lifted weights. Hell all he had to do was look in the mirror.

Not lifting is inexcusable

But we need Dawgbreeze to get on the phone and find out why we don't lift

And have heard the weight room mentioned in articles often as well, so I seriously doubt our players do no weight lifting whatsoever.

Now, I think we should do better, but I'm fairly certain they're lifting some.

bringing his parents to meet with him and Stansbury because he didnt want to lift. Stansbury sided with the Pattersons...and the rest is history...Richard asked to be removed from basketball, but LT wouldnt do it- said he had to comply with how the coach wanted it run...he considered retiring after that, asking the guy I coached with if he wanted to come back to State and take the job, but PL declined. Guess he decided to stay on

countless times and the hoops players were in there a good bit. im not saying this in support of stansbury's S&C program but to say they dont do any lifting is not true.

I respect him on everything else Maroon and White, but for some reason he is too close to Stans to be objective. You speak against Stans on BDJ and he will passionately blast you with everything he has, just short of banning you. Maybe someone else knows the connection, but when it comes to reading his thoughts concerning Stans always proceed with caution.

He acknowledged he likes Rick. But I disagree he attacks anyone who questions Stansbury's coaching. Ban somebody? LOL He also said he has seen JV lift in past years. Did he lie?

From what I remember reading one time, I think he just encouraged them to lift weights instead of putting them on a program and holding their noses to the grindstone. To me, thats worse than if Stans didn't have them lifting at all. If Stans didn't have them lifting, he had a reason for it (flawed though it may be). Just encouraging the team to lift without giving them any direction or consequences if they don't lift is a piss poor sign of leadership.</p>

ANY Division 1 sports team does not have a weight training regimen, you are beyond naive. If JV never lifted in college then he is the only one to blame if he doesn't get drafted (as high as he wants).

Bottom line: That quote HAD to be taken out of context. If any player (especially an undersized post player) was allowed to skip weight training sessions in the offseason, I will actually consider boarding coach's hatewagon.

you think Stansbury's strength coach is going around telling lies about Stansbury and how he runs the program ?
