Despite not sitting in on either of the interviews.

Correct because IMO there would need to be a significant disparity between the two interviews in Capel's favor in order for the competition to become remotely even. Chances are, that's not happening.

"He's a young coach, but that's one hell of a coach that knows the game real well," John Wall said of Brad Stevens. "Even at the end of the game, we lined up in different formation that he hadn't seen and he called out our play before I got the ball." Mitch Stringer/USA TODAY Sports

well-coached team," James replied. "Coach Stevens is very good. He puts his guys in position to succeed every night both offensively and defensively. So we've got to be in tune with the game plan and we have to be aggressive because they're very aggressive."

Of my 5 serious responses, only 1 is entirely about the human element. That an in-house candidate would have certain advantages at any elite program isn't strictly that, and the other 3 have nothing to do w/ pro-Duke bias. To recap: First, we're not hanging our hopes of competing in the ACC on Stevens' ability to find every Gordon Haywood. What more do we know about his ability to recruit elite recruits? Second, just like a flop w/ the Celtics says nothing to do w/ whether he's a good college coach or not (see Pitino, Rick), success isn't necessarily the same, either, and the same hit-or-miss nature exists when moving from one level of college to another. Third, he has all of 8 full seasons as a head coach under his belt right now. That's more than K had when he came to Duke, and Stevens' resume is way, way more impressive at this point, but it's also a very different time, wrt both the sport in general and Duke's status as an elite program.

Stevens is awesome and he's a great candidate who should be on the short list of candidates for any high major college program, including Duke. But he's not the only one. I think you went too far in acting as if he ought to be the only candidate and insinuating that there's no possible way to prefer anyone else other than through being emotionally compromised and unreasonable. When you do that, you back people into a corner where they have to trash a great candidate all b/c they're being forced to justify any other candidate.

Good point and that's not my intent Dat. Do I think he is far and away a better candidate than any and everyone? Of course not. Do I believe he is when comparing him to recent coaches from K's tree? Yes I do. I simply don't see anyone RIGHT NOW who compares. Maybe Mike Brey, maybe. But it is just an opinion and I apologize if I came across or expressed myself in a manner that suggests that anyone who disagrees is coming from a place of emotion instead of rational thought. Not my intent at all.

Good points. Do you think those guys just quoted would say as much about K? What about a guy who studied directly under him and adheres to the same practices?

I would never say Stevens isn't a great option, but Capel has played for, studied under, recruited for, and gained the utmost trust from the single person who has gotten Duke where it is today. That says a little something to me too. Probably more, to be honest.

Don't you guys think coach K will have major input into his successor ? And wouldn't he be loyal to a former Dukie ? Since he's already Associate Head Coach , wouldn't it be a slap in the face to give the job to someone besides Capel ?

My vote is for Capel. I believe in loyalty and I think K will turn the reigns over to him in time. Capel's a great recruiter and I think in today's game it's most important about getting the best athletes first. We know he can coach, he's got the experience and I like the fact that he has been K's right handed man the past several years.

I just listened to an interesting podcast on the subject of how much longer both K and Roy will coach and who their replacements could be. Andrew Carter and Laura Keeley from the N&O debate the topic. Carter is a UNC homer and I could almost hear him cringe when Keeley said she felt that K would still be coaching in 5 years. Both agreed that Roy most likely won't be coaching in 5 years. Both feel like Capel is the heir apparent to take over the reins for K and both feel like UNC will look outside the system for their next coach. Carter mentioned Shaka and Brad Stevens as possibilities. The link is below if you guys would like to check it out.

Brad Stevens is already considered an elite professional coach at an all-time professional franchise. He will not be the next Duke coach.

http://duke.247sports.com/Bolt/Jeff-Capel-speaks-on-succeeding-Coach-K-as-Duke-head-coach-44280581

Amid preparations for the NCAA Tournament, Duke associate head coach Jeff Capel checked in with the David Glenn Show on Monday to speak on a number of topics prior to the Blue Devils' 21st straight tournament appearance.

As each season come and goes, possibly the more intriguing of topics is how much longer does Duke head coach Mike Krzyzewski have left on the sideline for the Blue Devils. With no indication of slowing down any time soon, the question is still in the back of minds for many of that time when arguably the greatest coach in the history of the game calls it a career.

A number of top names have been thrown around to step in and fill the shoes, so to speak, of Coach K. One of the more sensible choices is Capel, who was promoted to associate head coach in April 2014.

During his visit with the David Glenn Show, Capel specifically touched on the his candidacy as what many believe to be as the frontrunner for the head coaching job when that opportunity presents itself. Below is his comments on what the future may or may not hold:

I did an interview I think a few weeks ago, maybe a month ago, with John and Chris Spatola. John brought up the question about the possibility of that happening. He mentioned something about (asking) other former players here and they don’t want to do it, and my thing was I’m not looking forward to that. What I said was that I can’t imagine another coach being here besides Coach K. I grew up here, and I’m 41, so the only coach I’ve known at Duke is Coach K.

So it’s going to be really weird when someone else walks through that door out to Cameron, but at the same time, you know it’s not going to be forever, and certainly I’m not saying it’s going to be anytime soon. He just asked a question, and I just said, ‘Look, I’m not scared of it. I wouldn’t run from it.’ There’s never going to be another Coach K. Whoever is the next coach here, and the coach after that, and the next coach after that, whoever it is will never be better than what Coach K has done. You just want to carry on and be the caretaker of the program, whoever it is. If that happens to be me and I get the opportunity to do that, I’ll try my damnedest to do a heck of a job, but it’s not something I’m searching for or pawning for. I do want to be a head coach again. I think that will happen at some point wherever it is, and I look forward to that opportunity.

Great piece....I meant to share it, but glad you did. I'm hoping it's years down the road but am I'm fully in the camp, at this time, of Jeff being the successor.

Capel b/c he knows to handle the big time recruits. Hurley could turn into a great one as well. Wonder what type of job Dawkins takes? Does he fall to mid major level or a program like GT.

Seems like Capel is currently the clear leader. The other lead candidate depends on the next 3-5 years (K's last years) and how they do with their current programs (Wojo, Collins, Hurley). Whichever of those three gets to more sweet 16s than the other will compete with Capel to be the final and top 2 candidates.

I personally think K will retire right after he gets an Olympic Gold and winning a 6th championship with Giles/Tatum/Jackson (hopefully UNC can keep that from happening but I'm being realistic).

If K retires in the next 2 years, Capel is a lock IMO. If K goes 5+ years, that will give Wojo, Collins and Hurley the time to build Marquette, NW and ASU, respectively into top 25 programs, if that is possible. It all depends on their ability to recruit players to hard to recruit programs. Collins has the edge if he can tap into the Chicago hoops pool. Marquette seems like it will be an uphill battle for Wojo after Ellenson leaves. Hurley won't need to recruit the 1400 SAT kids and thus might be able to recruit from a wider talent base, especially the west coast. However, I don't know if Hurley is a west coast guy. We shall see.

I believe former players who are new coaches on the bench who also have zero head coaching experience (Scheyer, James, Smith) will coach elsewhere but not at Duke. K has done a good job of getting lots of branches though.

Brad Stevens seems unlikely. His coaching strengths are being fully utilized in Boston and he's got a "blue blood" NBA franchise as his employer and multiple draft picks and lots of cap space. He won't have to recruit like he would have to as a college coach, even if he was recruiting for Duke. And Boston is becoming a top NBA team with zero superstars. Great coach but I don't see him returning to the college game.

The one who might return to college would be Billy Donovan but he's a Pitino disciple. Donovan might see Durant leave OKC (ironically for Boston) and he'd be stuck in a middle of the road NBA city.

I live in KY, all of the UK people are praying for Donovan when Cal leaves in 5 years or so. I tend to believe his time in OKC will be short lived, Durant and Westbrook are going to leave after next season.

The current recruiting class of 2017 should be loaded for us, so that gives me hope that K will be around for at least another 3 years, hopefully more like 6-7 years. And I still think it's WAY too early to seriously project who the next coach will be. However, if K were to win the title next year and ride off into the sunshine (dont see it happening) than it's Capel's job.

I'd be happy with either Capel or Sean Miller, honestly.
Sean Miller doesn't really have a lot of tournament success though. I don't believe he has ever gotten to the final four. If Duke were going to go outside the Duke family to pursue the next coach, what about trying to get Bill Self to come coach? I highly doubt he would leave Kansas though, but it would be worth a shot. He recruits well, he has Kansas in the NCAA tournament every year, he still has a lot of life left in him, and he is used to coaching in a blue blood environment.

One thing to consider is exactly how much influence K will have with his successor. Part of me thinks that it's crazy not to think his opinion is going to carry a LOT of weight on the subject. And if you believe that then it almost has to be Capel or someone close to the program just out of sheer loyalty.

However, if K truly stays at arms length away from the process, I think they try to go after a very elite proven commodity such as Stevens or the like. I love Capel as a recruiter but it's hands down, not even close, the best basketball head coaching gig in America - college or pro- and the next coach should be just about anyone we want within reason.

I voted Stevens but if he is not interested I'd have 3 or 4 others I would prefer over Capel. My first choices would be Stevens, Auriemma, Few and Bennett. All are PROVEN winners at the highest level - that has to be the first pre-requisite.

Bennett is two time ACC coach of the year, Pac-12 coach of the year, Naismith national coach of the year....who's credentials / resume do you think are better that we are likely to get? And anyone who doesn't think Auriemma isn't one of the best coaches of our generation just doesn't know basketball. I'll agree he's a tool but he will go down as one of the greatest ever.

If we don't go in house I would love to have Tony Bennett. He does so well with the talent he has but I don't think we have a snowballs chance as well as nobody has a snowballs chance. He's UVA's Coach K. He will win a couple or more national championships before he hangs it up. I think he's only second to Coach K right now as the best coach in the country. OFC

You said Bennett has won at the highest level, which he has not. I don't dislike Bennett at all, but I don't necessarily think his style is the best fit. I'm not in favor of hiring a women's coach. This is just a guess, but I'm going to assume young hot shot recruits aren't going to flock to a previous women's bball coach.

Geno Aurriema has as good a chance at this job as every single poster on this board. Zero. Is he a good coach, no question- he also has plenty of major red flags that will get him no where near this program.

I'll go outside any of the listed choices (especially since I doubt Brad Stevens is leaving the NBA) and make Sean Miller by number one choice. He's a very proven winner and as great a recruiter as there is in college basketball aside from Krzyzewski and Calipari. If he said no, I'd offer his brother Archie, who wouldn't turn Duke down to stay at Dayton.

No thanks on anyone from the Krzyzewski coaching tree. Capel was pretty awful when he didn't have one of the 10 or 20 best players in the world (Blake Griffin) around and had the NCAA sniffing around for possible violations, Johnny Dawkins was the very definition of mediocre at Stanford, Brey is good enough for Notre Dame, but Duke would demand better and the others listed (Hurley, Wojo, Collins) aren't proven enough one way or another.

Geno likes starting verbal fueds with other female coaches(Summer & ND coach). Imagine him trying that garbage with K, Roy or Pitino). They'd eat him for lunch.

Give me Capel b/c he knows how to recruit 5 stars. Just look at what has come thru the doors over past few years. Last year during open practice in Charlotte I sat one row behind Thornton & his mom while Jeff interacted with them. It was very easy to see the relationship was tight.

Yes, but bear in mind, it is a lot easier to recruit when those guys know that they will be playing for the best coach in the game. How would he recruit if the coach was an unknown quantity? Just because a coach has been as assistant doesn't necessarily mean he will be a great coach. You can look over at the Hill some years back and see that. I just want to see the best possible coach as a replacement . If that means going outside then by all means do it.

Whoever says Tony Bennett, must really enjoy basketball games scored in the 50's. Count me out of that crowd.
Don't get me wrong, what he is doing at UVA is incredible and no one saw it coming. But we are Duke, and we have the ability to land top 10 recruits every single year. NO TOP 10 RECRUIT IS EVER GOING TO WANT TO PLAY THE STYLE THAT BENNETT COACHES.

If we hire from within: Capel (with Nate and Scheyer as lead assistants)
If we hire from Not within:
1. Stevens (highly unlikely due to Celtics making things happen.)
2. Sean Miller
3. Shaka Smart
