Here’s why I think not … we essentially already banned ourselves for the FBI scandal by proactively firing Pitino and replacing him with interim HC Dave Padgett. You may recall that we did not make the NCAA tournament in 2017-18…. I am certain our admin has repeatedly stressed that point at every turn, in addition to submitting all of the costs associated with our decision to be proactive regarding Jurich and Pitino, including Jurich’s buyout and lawyer’s fees resulting from firing Jurich and Pitino.
Now on top of that, UofL will be pointing out that they self-imposed a huge fine and a multi-game suspension for Coach Mack for what are at most secondary violations, and that they did so because they recognized that committing those violations while on probation increases their severity. What it has cost UofL to be proactive should be easy for UofL to document.
UofL basketball has certainly made mistakes, but it has also been a good citizen in reporting these missteps. The only time they didn’t was when these secondary violations occurred, but our admin was once again proactive in punishing our head coach when they learned about the violations.
The NCAA should have confidence that the current UofL administration is committed to playing by the NCAA’s rules based on its responses to both the FBI scandal and the latest minor violations.
Contrary to most fans’ negative responses to the latest allegations being added to our NoA, I actually see that as a good thing. It means that we will get all of this over with sooner rather than having to wait and wonder whether we will receive another NoA for the minor violations after the FBI scandal is completed.
I cannot see a multi-year ban for this. Had we basically done like all of the other schools caught up in the FBI scandal and said “FU, move along, nothing to see here.” Then yes, we’d probably deserve a multi-year ban.
