17 that. The game is being played under protest, but there's not a single person on this planet that thinks that MLB will do what's right. Maybe if MLB could be trusted to do their job, then fans wouldn't feel it necessary to go to extremes over incorrect calls. Ditto for the SEC.
So everytime there's a bad call people should just throw **** on the field? It was a terrible call, awful in fact, but you don't do that.
For an ordinary bad call, I would agree. For the worst call in my entire lifetime (I was born in 1986, and, yes, the 1985 World Series call was worse), I don't blame the fans one bit.
So its ok for our students to throw cups and bottles in our Student Section at football games but its not ok for the BRaves fans to throw stuff on the field? Not defending the Braves fans but i think its funny how some are bashing the BRaves fans and then say the Student Section thing is just tradition.

Actually no you don't. The rule reads the call shall be made immediately. The reason for the late call was because the LF umpire made the call instead of the infield umpires who normally make that call.
The amount and how long it went on was over the top. The PA announcer and
security should have gotten things under control sooner.
I thought it was a ridiculous, terrible call and understand the fans acting out their frustration. That mis-play could have could totally freaked out the Cards, but the ump bailed them out.
BTW, I was pulling for the Braves today.

In 1998, Cardinal fans threw debris on the field when Mark McGwire was ejected...by umpire Sam Holbrook...against the Atlanta Braves.

The rule reads: "when it seems apparent that a batted ball will be an Infield Fly, the umpire shall immediately declare 'Infield Fly'..." That doesn't say that he must declare it immediately after the ball is hit, but only immediately after it's apparent the rule would apply.
And for it to be an infield fly, it must be a flyball (again quoting the rule) "which can be caught by an infielder with ordinary effort..."
So.... as much as I think it's a crappy call, it seems to follow the letter of the rules (and called appropriately by the umpire). I only say it's crappy for how deep it was. I mean, you hit a ball high enough and an infielder could get to it "with ordinary effort" even if hit much deeper than this one was.

Braves back in playoffs after missing last year and getting eliminated the year before with the help of 2 bad calls that led to one run loses against the Giants
Braves fans wanting to send Chipper off with at least a trip to the World Series.
Game starts off great jumping ahead early.
Then the Braves give up several runs on errors.

The intent is completely different. Whiskey showers are celebratory, not dissatisfaction with a ref's ruling.

It was a bad call, yes. But it was a judgment call in a 3 run wild card game. I can come up with worse baseball calls in the last 5-10 years. (How about the safe call at the end of that otherwise perfect game, for example?)
They broke it down really well on MLB network last night.
I didn't see it live, but they showed replays from different angles and slowed it down to see exactly when the ump called infield fly. They are suppose tO wait until the fly ball reaches its apex, then look to the fielder to see if he will catch it with ordinary effort. Once the ball was coming down, the umpire looked to the SS, who was calling off the LF and slowing down. As it looked like he stopped to be under the ball, the ump raised his hand making the call. Then you see the SS raise his arms having lost the ball, which as Cal Ripken pointed out, landed in a different mower line than where the SS was standing, at least 4 feet away. Harold Reynolds and Omar Vizquel said the umpire followed how they are taught to make the call. Cal disagreed and said it was never an "ordinary effort".
They also showed highlights from other games this year, where the same play happened, and the same call was made at the same distance by a LF umpire. So its not necessarily a wrong call because of the umpire or location.
I disagree with the call bc it goes against the original intent of the rule- to keep the defense from gaining an advantage by intentionally dropping the ball. The Cards weren't going to get a double play if the ball falls, so no need for the infield fly call.

Wrong, Ross called time out before he was in motion. The umpire granted him the timeout, but by the time the umpire could get his hands up to signal timeout Lohse started his motion.
