Duke:

Overall: 1st
Offense: 2nd
Defense: 2nd

I’m not sure if we’ve ever had the #1 offense AND #2 defense in the KenPom era, but we sure are trending that way.

2002 (first year it was tracked) we were the #1 offense and the #1 defense, even factoring in our Sweet 16 loss.

2004 we were the #2 offense and #3 defense, again factoring in our Final Four loss.

IMO those (along with 99, which probably would have been #1 offense #2 defense or something like that) are by far the best Duke teams of the past 20 years to not win a title.

Pretty impressive. I think the scary thing is that we have the room to really improve on offense, clearly in the half court. Defensively, we do take a number of poorly calculated gambles, leaving us vulnerable for back doors and late in the shot clock buckets. Can we improve in our half court in ACC play?

Very impressive considering this is a young team, we lost every starter from last year and K hasn’t been able to get the defense going at the beginning of the season.

Injuries plays a big part and thus far, we have been able to escape the early season injury bug (as in start of the regular season).

I was having this conversation with my son in the car yesterday on the way home from his CYO practice. You know UVA will slow us down. I wonder if other teams will do the same which IMO will force us to run more half court offence. It's pretty obvious we can run and gun as well or better than anyone in the country. If our half court offence starts really clicking, look out!

I still think D gets us #6.

Had no idea about Marquette. I don't think they are 3-0 though. Unless I looked at it wrong, I think it's 3-1. Still great start for them though.

Through a little over half of today’s games factored into kenpom’s rankings, we’re 1 of only 2 teams ranked in the top 10 in both offense and defense. The other team is Virginia. We’re #2 in offense and #3 in defense. Virginia is #8 in offense and #4 in defense.

I feel like 2001 would've also been right at the top of both.

I agree with the UNLV victory being the biggest win in Duke history, but if we had lost to Kansas it would have been bittersweet. Duke had lost the most FF's ever without winning a championship at the time...8 or 9 I think. The Kansas win cemented the legacy of the UNLV game, and gave us long suffering Duke fans our 1st NCAA championship. I'll never forget it. 4 more have followed, but none was as sweet as the first.
