In the end we can speculate why we can or cant do certain things (example above where Pope will not play freshman PGs, or that we over spent on transfer players.)

But the fact remains that UNC and Duke seem to be doing just fine with their ability to add elite talent to a roster with returning guys and transfers.

So in the end, gotta figure that out. Do we have to sort of overpromise these recruits, knowing they are still getting millions? Are our facilities lacking? Is Pope too nice? Is Mitch a crappy AD? Do we need a basketball GM? If our rivals can do it, so can we.

Well he put more effort in the women’s basketball coaching search than he did for the men’s team. That tells me all I need to know about where his priorities lie. But that’s neither here not there.
But how does that affect recruiting?

I will take coaching over recruiting.

Eh I dunno.

Cal took us to four final fours and won a national championship in large part because he assembled massively talented teams.

Pope could be the greatest coach in the world but if u don't have the horses, you don't have the horses.

None of the past national champions didn't have massive talent.

This is why I feel (and not just UK or college basketball but sports in general) too much weight is given on the head coach.

We judge coaches IMO by all the wrong ways. To me, the best coach should be the coach that overperforms the most relative to what their talent on the roster suggests they should do. But we don't view it like that. We view it in terms of who wins the most titles, has the most wins etc etc.

it's fine its just that......ultimately the players decide these things.

Because he hired a coach who has never had to recruit elite players, he never even had so much as a victory in the tournament. He was from an incredibly strict religious school that had just joined a power conference. Had he never been a former player do you think Mitch’s hire would’ve been accepted by Kentucky fans? The guy appeared to care more about the religious sanctity his coach had than he did the results of their coaching.

On the other hand he hired a women’s coach with a final four appearance from a power conference. Someone who has experience coaching at the level that was necessary to coach the women’s team in the SEC.

Doesn’t that seem odd for a school that values the men’s team as their pride and joy?

It’s kind of odd he left Tennessee, NC State and Miami on the list, he will have to live with it. Two football schools and a school with a cheater for head coach.

I think it's a little of being too nice, and wanting to be their philosopher when they just want to get to the NBA.

The only thing ill say is, we seemingly tried to hire the top coaches, but we got turned down pretty much at the jump. I sort of like that Mitch took a shot on Pope who showed a lot of promise. If you can land a guy like that, and hes legit.. you got your coach for the next 20 years. But, theres associated risk. Hes unproven at this level.

I think what a lot of people probably dont want to hear. I dont think the UK mens coaching job is as meaningful as us fans think. I think it comes with a heck of a lot of stress ans scrutiny. High expectations. A school that isnt exactly swimming in money (comparatively). A city and state thats not exactly desirable to live in (again, comparatively). And while its no where near to being a bad job.. the question is, is it a top5 coaching job, which is what it needs to be? Or, is it somewhere closer to being in the mix with lots of other schools.

I mean. We had a lot of coaches have no interest. Only Scott drew really gave us the time or day. What does that tell you?

Paklids…

We are great!!! One game passes.

We are not great.

Pope has built an amazing deep team. 2 months passes. Pope is a suck recruiter.

You literally can’t make this crap up.
Basically, this roster is not worth that money

Overspend

Top 5 budget in country with a bunch of good players but probably no great players (do not count JQ)

Every other top spender has star, Wilson, Boozer, Mikel, Yaxel...

If you are top spender, you should have star in your team

Pope is good at recruit good players

But as of now, he sucks at recruit great players

Yep. It wasn't as if we weren't trying to get big time coaches in here. Pope definitely wasn't the first option here.

The other thing he.........just because Pope hasn't had big time recruits in the past doesn't mean he can't reel them in. I'd assume the resources at UK are way better than the resources he had at BYU during his time there. We are only in Year 2 here.

This is like the argument I have with Met fans about David Sterns. Well he never reeled in any big value player he's a small market guy running the Brewers. And it's like well yeah but that's just he didn't have a rich owner allowing him to spend big amts of money not because he preferred to do it that way.

Whether Pope can actually recruit remains to be seen but I'm not going to come to any conclusions after 1 year.

All this bitching and moaning from some of the fans. What is that jack Nicholson line from a few good men? You assume our NIL is 22 million because it fits your argument, but you have no idea. You assume someone excludes us or picks another school because our coaches suck. We lose a game that hurts and you become a bunch of dicks, thinking you are entitled to win every game and every recruiting battle.

That’s because it’s 0% logic and 100% emotion with most of this.

The best case scenario for our AD: Mitch went after one coach: Scott Drew. No one is certain if there was anyone else, there was probably a cash offer for the UConn coach, but that was probably an appeasement to fans and boosters. Once the Drew hire, who I assumed he thought was a certainty fell through he went for the one coach who would take it regardless. The fact that he appears to be incredibly religious was obviously a plus. This scenario doesn’t make him look good at all, but it’s also the most believable one considering his history.

The worst case: is Mitch is completely incapable of bringing in an elite coach for the men’s basketball program. He made every attempt to hire one and everyone turned him down. This wouldn’t be the first time this has happened considering his hire of BCG back in 2007. The fact that he was apparently not even involved with the Calipari hire shows just how piss-poor he is at making decisions for our program.

Considering either scenarios there is under not one circumstance should he be involved with the next coaching search if Pope doesn’t work out. He is a complete dunce who will just screw it up again.

Elite hire? Like Indiana, Duke, North Carolina? Look around, dude. It isn’t 1973 anymore. Coaches don’t need blueblood schools the same as the past.

What happened to all that we want Kentucky boys who play for the name on the front and know what it means to wear the jersey? You know, the kind Cal wouldn’t recruit. Just get

Reece Davidson and Jonathan Moss with a couple of portal guys. You know, since that’s what so many people claimed to want.

I think Pope is going to be a great coach in time. He has to earn his chops.
That being said, I think he would have been better off staying out west and getting his feet solidly in coaching ranks before coming here.

Then why did we bother recruiting anyone of the many that had us listed?
We don’t know, as Pope has said many times, as a fanbase how deep we are going at guys. There’s a lot of factors that go into it. Yes, we have clearly lost some recruiting battles that is by far not the main thing. Bro, it’s sad watching this Fr.

So, are you content with those 10 players for next season?
Depends on which ones, but based on actual data, that would be optimal to win a title so yes. I keep trying to yell at a wall to talk some of my dear BBN members away from the ledge. Y’all have went insane and not hearing logic anymore

I wonder if UK ever really intended to take more than 2 high school recruits for next season. Not saying Pope didn't want Rippey or any other player that committed somewhere else. This is just a question a little off topic that I thought about. Maybe someone can remind me if there has been something credible/concrete reported about how many high school kids UK intended to take for next season.

BBN: “Fred, I’m tired of you drinking all night and staying out with those fast women. We are done”

BBN meets Bob: “Oh, Bob. You’re the perfect man.”

(Two seconds later)

(Notices Bob has a freckle).

BBN: “Omg I’ve gotta go back to Fred. I know he won’t drink every night and go with all those fast women. He really IS the answer!”

Pope sucks at recruiting because the kid demands to be a starter and what? Pope should kick Lowe and Johnson off the team to get this kid?

Get a GD grip guys. If we miss on Collins and Stokes, and dont get a damn good transfer portal player , then worry.
What kid demanded to be a starter? Oh wait, you can’t say because you made that up. Kids generally expect to play if they earn it, you know, like Moreno over Garrison.
