One of the reasons that I like Mullen a lot is because I'm a big believer in focusing on the things that you can control, and he seems to have the same philosophy. He doesn't ***** and moan about having three FBS teams in the state, the Mississippi school systems, or even gameday officiating(at least not often). The problem, though, is that while I like that in a head coach, those hurdles are still there and they're significant.
It's great that we're building new facilities and finally filling DWS, but we're in recruiting battles against countless teams that have national titles on their resume, absolutely ridiculous stadiums/facilities, NFL hall of famers left and right, and college towns that are considered to be some of the best in the country. Not to mention that even the schools that don't exist in talent rich states have an utter stranglehold on the talent that is there. I think that Byrne/Stricklin/Mullen have done an admirable job in doing what they have. There is now a vision that I've never witnessed in my lifetime as an MSU fan, but it's still not a level playing field and I can't imagine how it ever will be. It is going to take a perfect storm to get us back to the SEC championship.
I keep hearing that we're either going to have to cheat or win consistently to start getting high profile recruits, but I'm still skeptical. Even if we do churn out another 9 wins this year, I don't know that I see much change other than maybe snagging a couple more of those 50/50 guys from schools like Ole Miss or UT. Not trying to be a wet blanket, but my point is that I think we're going to have to get used to being happy with 7-9 win seasons because that's pretty much the peak as I see it.
