It is being reported that Kevin Williams is being pursued by Kentucky as a graduate transfer? Did he leave the team or are they just trying to get him to leave for Kentucky? Just curious..... Morrow at it again.

Torn on this concept. Morrow brought him here originally so I understand they have a relationship-however, I don't think Morrow should be seeking him out (but I'd be ok if the player sought him out). We do need experience at DT next year w/ Collins & VV departing (plus you can never have enough DT's anyways).

Tells me the Davis twins are beating him out....

He isn't even practicing this spring so doubt they are "beating him out". He was brought in by Uncle Vince (may have been his HS coach) so not a surprise to me.

Just hope there isn't something similar up with McMullen

That may be, but we really could use the depth.
When has Williams ever really given us depth? 90% of his career has been spent in rehab. Good luck to the young man, but I never expected to see him last more than a few games before reinjuring something. We are THIN at DT. Period. Thanks Hank Hughes!

We definitely want Kevin Williams wearing a red jersey this year. Hope he sticks with Nebraska.

On another note, I can't believe how badly our staff had bungled the DT position. It goes beyond one former assistant not pulling his weight.

I did not say I did not want him back. Merely pointing out the obvious: he is very, very injury prone and most likely will always be. He has rarely provided us with reliable depth.
Nor did I say Hughes was the only problem. But when you have zero recruits at the position you coach it is a huge problem.
But I agree there have been other issues at that position.

Losing Williams would be a major
blow. Regardless of depth the kid is talented and would have potentially started this year. At the least he would have been first man in.

Agreed. Can't blame Hank Hughes entirely on this. Even if he does recruit a DL or two last year, they likely redshirt this next season...

Valentine should have never declared for the draft, but he is free to do what he wants to do. Losing Williams would in fact be a blow to the team and I hope he hangs around. I know he very much wanted to be considered a blackshirt last season. He was highly recruited out of high school and believes he has NFL potential. I'd like to see him realize that NFL potential right here in Lincoln.

I have a hard time believing a kid that knows the "lay of the land" where he is at and our lack of depth would remotely consider this...especially if considering a future in football. It's not like he is buried on the Chart here...

Explanation?

The staff signed zero defensive tackle recruits in the 2016 class. It was a complete and total whiff at arguably one of the most important positions on the team. Also, if I remember correctly, only one DT prospect even officially visited Lincoln last year (4-star Jordan Elliott). And we weren't a factor when he opened up his recruitment late in the year.

I fully understand the situation with Collins and Valentine left some holes for 2016, but the lack of signees will be felt in 2017 and beyond. Outside of Maurice and Williams (seniors), we have a collection of guys that have a combined two tackles worth of playing experience. I grant there are some intriguing young prospects who will now be thrust into the starting lineup, but counting on these guys to anchor the defensive line is either a risky plan or it's a lack of a plan altogether. What happens if somebody gets hurt, transfers, or doesn't live up to expectations. The margin of error seems awfully thin.

I think they should recruit two defensive tackles every year. Had they signed two in 2016, they could redshirt this season and possibly contribute in 2017 if something doesn't pan out with the aforementioned players.

This how a team with good to great overall talent can end up with 5+ losses in a year. One or 2 position groups that have huge holes is more than enough to negate talent elsewhere.

No doubt on the 2 per year. Injuries and dead weight will always even out the numbers there.

Either he's just lost interest in playing in Lincoln or he believes the young guys will pass him on the depth chart. As for the crap recruiting last year, that wouldn't address much wrt depth this year. A JUCO maybe, but a JUCO probably doesn't jump Davis squared on the depth chart.

I would say this is why we need to MOVE the ball and keep this thin defense off the field. As long as we control the ball I don't care if it's run or pass.

Now if Tommy is 2015 Tommy and not new and improved, then we need to run.

That's why I said run the ball. Until he proves he can consistently make good decisions.

Glad Parella is chasing hard after a Juco DT

Another top priority for our new Dline coach is to get production out of McMullen and at minimum keep Williams around for depth purposes. If both aren't on the roster next year that doesn't reflect well on him.

Maybe we actually need to hold the student athlete accountable every once in awhile. If a player isn't taking care of business in the classroom or wants to leave... those are decisions the student athlete makes. The coaching staff can't babysit or spoon feed the athletes 24/7.

By the way...if the Runzas and Valentino pizza slices aren't warm in the stadium this fall...I am going to blame Parella . Winking

Well, our defensive lineman haven't exactly made the most intelligent decisions lately. I wouldn't say it reflects badly on Parrella.

While Williams hasn't played much, if he can stay healthy he would be great to have on the line for depth purposes.
I'm just really hoping we can land some DT's this year. I saw it mentioned on an $EC board yesterday that 5 star DT Tyler Shelvin said he wants to visit USC, A&M and Nebraska (he's already visited LSU & Bama). That in itself is great, getting the 2nd best DT in the nation to visit is nothing but a positive.

I would honestly do what I can to get them to both stay (if in fact they are both looking to leave)...I know people like the "stubborn coach" approach and the old "my way or I-80" approach but sometimes it is smarter to try and keep kids around if you don't have to bend over all that much.

I am not saying that is the case...I am just saying that it might be the smart move

That sucks for depth. But the fact that he's a senior and it's even in the discussion for him to get beaten out for a job like that tells you most of what you need to know about his career.

Really doesn't look like he was going to make the 2-deep, perhaps not even the three deep.

Kid has had a tough go here (injuries). It would be year 6 so I sure hope he's graduated by now. He has talent just hasn't been able to consistently show it. Wish him the best and move on. Does it hurt losing him? Yes...but not as much as having an unhappy vet.

I am sad to see him go if true. If he can stay healthy he would add depth. But as I said above... when has he ever really been healthy? Losing him obviously is a bad thing. Just not certain how much depth he really adds given his history. We are thin at defensive tackle. Period. We need to really hope the young guys step up and that we avoid injuries. Otherwise it could get ugly for us in the trenches.
