I hope Riley doesn't live to regret his offer, but I have a hunch he -- and by implication the football program he is coaching currently -- will get a huge black eye from the media. Just what we don't need. He should have concluded this matter while in Oregon.

Does anyone have a link to a complete description of all th eevents that surround this story? Everytime this gets discussed the articles frame it as though Riley knew she was raped (i.e., there was some kind of authority that had deemed this to be true) and didn't care so much. But I know that's obviously not the entire story. I'm not defending anyone, or minimiziong the significance of the alleged crime, just trying to get all the information about this.

P.S. I'm proud of Riley for bringin her to Nebraska and having her speak to the team. Some things are more important than football. And I'm glad we have a man at the helm that wants our young men to learn from her.

I guess I'm just a little amazed that someone at UNL thought this was a good idea???

Here's a long read.

Why did Riley invite her to talk, in his own quoted words:

"I always try to research the right people to talk to our team and do it throughout the year," Riley said. "That would be a compelling talk. A real-life talk. Instead of just talking about rape and sexual assault, actually having someone talk about how things can change for everyone in a moment like that."

Could it hurt or help Nebraska, maybe, maybe not, I don't know. It depends on what actions Brenda Tracy takes. There is a title IX lawsuit from another woman that has been filed against Mike Riley for failure to correct a hostile and sexually violent culture.

I disagree. It all depends upon what Mike Riley does/says. We already know what she will say and do, as she's a public advocate for the last several years. If she doesn't/hasn't heard what she wants to from Riley, it could get ugly.

The very fact that Riley invited her here to talk tells me it's going to be a positive thing, possibly very positive for everyone involved.

Not sure how this will give Nebraska a black eye... Unless she goes for Riley and says "you failed me and all victims of sexual assault," won't this be a positive that Riley is puttingn a spotlight on a problem that needs to be addressed? Isn't this a good thing?

Maybe I'm missing something, and I didn't go to the link as I don't have time at the moment.

There's nothing in the link that says anything different than what we've already heard. Nothing about this so far has given Riley or the program any negative publicity so far, and I fail to see how it will. Frankly, I think those that see something negative here are being overly negative themselves.

You're right it does depend on what Mike Riley does/says, but it will be how Brenda Tracy feels and her follow-up actions that determines where this is going. What the coaches do/say, players do/say, university personnel do/say, some random person she meets in Lincoln do/say, all will or could impact her. Whether there is a greater fallout or reconciliation and escalating bad or good press, that will be up to Brenda Tracy. I can't imagine how Brenda Tracy feels. I can imagine that when she steps off the plane, when she arrives at campus, when she talks with Coach Riley, her emotions will be PEGGED OUT, 100%.

Anybody who has taken sexual harassment or now harassment training will tell you: "it's not what you do or say, it's how the other person interprets it". How will Brenda Tracy "interpret" everything from her visit, we'll have to wait and see. She holds all the cards.

I have no opinion either way on whether this will be "good" or "bad". I hope that Brenda Tracy can reach some type of closure/reconciliation with Coach Riley and that it's positive for all parties.

The biggest red flag to me were her comments about why she didn't prosecute. She said her best friend was going to testify against her. That sounds a bit odd to say the least. She was gang raped and her best friend was going to testify against her. Oh well, if it blows up and she decides to crucify Riley, it's not like we haven't had to deal with similar issues in the past.

If UNL administration said having this meeting on UNL property was not allowed, HCMR would have had to contract with a local high school to have it in their gym. We have seen how that can turn out.

Good article. It seems that all parties walked into this situation with the right intentions and that the meeting served as a powerful tool to educate. I for one would like to see UNL out in front of bringing awareness to the issue of violence against women, as Brenda Tracy hopes. Sports can be a powerful tool to spread a message.

I feel like this was a great move by coach Riley and believe something similar happened at UNL in 2008 when Kathy Redmond, the woman who accused Christian Peter of sexual assault, came to Lincoln and spoke to the the football team.

I also searched Google and read quite a few articles about what happened in Corvallis in 2008. The link below should paint a pretty graphic picture of what happened that night according to Ms. Tracy.

There were several things that didn't make a whole lot of sense. Clearly she made a bad choice of men to go home and party with. The deciding against prosecution thing is pretty common for traumatized women though. Blaming Riley and holding such animosity towards him all those years was not a healthy response. It sounds like their meeting was a good thing for all parties.
