Kroger will now charge fees for cash back at checkout

If you're going to tack on cashback at your local Kroger grocery store, you will start seeing a fee tacked on for the perk.

Like using a foreign ATM, the grocery chain is adding at least a 50-cent fee for debit card cashback transactions, WXIX reported.

I don't blame them. Banks are paying most ATM fees now so why not get in the game and receive some fee income? .50 is an annoying fee and $3.50 is too high. Stay lower than the banks and charge a flat $2. People won't blink at that.

I have numerous non-purchase events that are cash only: youth/hs sports entry, festivals, card games, door knockers, tipping house workers. Go thru about a $50/wk like that. Took a bus from parking to concert last night that was $2.

Don't know why Kroger or any retailer ought to be a free ATM. Does this apply to check-writing over the sale amount? Now there's no ATM fee there.

I can't even remember the last time I paid for something in cash. Has to have been years since even vending machines take credit cards or tap to pay stuff like Google/Apple Pay. Hell, I even left my wallet at home one day when grocery shopping and didn't need to go back to get it because I could just pay for it using the Walmart app.

Though I do carry $25 on me in the event a rare situation pops up where I need to pay for something with cash.

If you have a credit card with any type of awards or cashback program, you're literally throwing away money by paying for anything via a non-credit card method (payments with your smartphone are tied to your credit card).

I use cash for everything. Since I started working in 1981 I’ve never had a bank account just a series of CU accounts. One of their ATM’s is inside my neighborhood King Soopers which is what Kroger is called here. I can get up to $300 and no fee at all.

Speaking as someone who lives in a place with a lot of Kroger stores, who in TF doesn’t have a Kroger card that would save them the fee? If you regularly use Kroger as a pseudo-ATM, then just get a card.

Of course this is excluding my ultra-conservative homeschool friends who think Kroger is monitoring their entire life if they get a card ...........

I can't think of the last time I saw someone go through a Kroger line with me that didn't have a Kroger card.

Even I have a Kroger card and closest stores are located at least 180 miles distant. I primarily use the card when shopping back east in KY and TN 2-3 times yearly.
