KU = University of Kansas. Makes no sense. KU is not an abbreviation for <span style="font-weight: bold;">U</span>niversity of <span style="font-weight: bold;">K</span>ansas.

I used to think the media referring to Big 12 schools as "insert school letter" U as just something stupid. Now I see a school identifying themselves as a mis-spelled abbreviation. WT17. Makes no sense.

I am glad we have the good sense not to call ourselves a random combination of M, S, and U.

Probably just traditional. In the case of Colorado, it was to distinguish itself from the Univ of California. Read about that here. I imagine you are overthinking this just a tad.

says there..

<span class="panel_wrapper">Around 1924-25 "CU" became the official abbreviation, presumably to distinguish Colorado from the University of California.</span>
<span class="panel_wrapper">

Its still stupid. Lots of competition between U of Colorado and U of California for students? In 1924?

University of Colorado at Boulder = CU (Different from the UC of California, or Cincinnati, or the rightful name of Chattanooga.)
University of Kansas = KU (Different from Kentucky's UK.)
University of Missouri at Columbia = MU (Different from Michigan's UM, or Miami's, or Mississippi's, or...)
University of Nebraska at Lincoln = NU (Don't think they were in danger of being confused with Nevada-Reno, though.)
University of Oklahoma = OU (Different from Oregon's UO.)

Kansas State University = KSU
Oklahoma State University = OSU

<span style="font-style: italic;">Edited below: To correct my error, without hiding my shame.</span>
Iowa State University = ISU

<span style="text-decoration: line-through;">University of Iowa = UI</span> <br style="text-decoration: line-through;"> <br style="text-decoration: line-through;"> <span style="text-decoration: line-through;">Damn you, Iowa! You've messed it all up! Although, in Iowa's defense, IU was already being used by Indiana University-Bloomington.</span>

I'm rather embarrassed.

I'll go with I just woke up and my brain hasn't completely powered on, yet. That's about the best excuse I can come up with.

Wow. Just... Wow.
