KYPSW 2021-22

The tradition of KYPSW (Know Your Penn State Wrestlers) continues! Moving to a new board can’t stop us!

What is KYPSW, you might be asking? Well, don’t be like thefanswin’s family in the basement. Keep your britches on. I’m about to tell you. By the end, even Mike Evans…well, you know the rest. And, for sure, this contest beats Nico in the room. Then again, so does everything else, so that’s not saying much.

The contest has three components: the dual season, B1G and NCAAs, with a corresponding increase in points. There is a podium for each of the individual parts, and then one Grand Champion walks away with the bragging rights that come along with winning a contest that takes place on an obscure sports message board. That, plus amazing prizes, which are still in the mail from all previous years. I know we have former winners who still go to the mailbox every day, anticipating their just rewards. I still don’t understand how the post office continues to lose those year after year.

Due to the long season, about 65 people usually start out in the first dual, but by the end, only 35, or so, have actually competed in all of the duals. Hopefully, you’ve all been working on your conditioning, and are ready to get after it.

Now, without further ado...

Here are the rules for the KYPSW Dual Season portion.

· Prior to each dual meet (usually by Wed night), I (or one of my able assistants) will post the expected PSU lineup*.

· Prior to the start of a dual, each participant in our competition posts his/her predicted winner and type of victory (dec, major, tech, or fall) for each match in the dual. Injury defaults or DQs count as falls. For each match prediction, you get 2 points for calling the correct winner, plus 1 bonus point for calling the correct type of victory. No points are awarded unless you call the correct winner.

· Predictions for each event must be posted in the KYPSW thread on whichever board you choose (and posted prior to the start of the event) to count for point-scoring. Please only post predictions on one board, PARTICULARLY if you have different names on each board.

· When the posted lineups suggest multiple possible matchups in a weight class and a member posts picks for only a subset of those possible matchups, no points will be awarded to said member for the weight class if the pick fails to include the matchup that ultimately takes place.

· When a PSU opponent forfeits a weight-class during a Dual, every FOS participant in that event will be awarded full point-value for the match (2 pts) and bonus (1 pt) [total = 3 pts]. This applies only to Forfeits where the opponent does not step onto the mat -- Injury Defaults and Disqualifications are not considered Forfeits (they will be counted as Falls, as noted in original text above).

· I will compile and score results, posting weekly updates.

· Highest scorer at season's end** is awarded bragging rights for being the FOS/BWI/ON3 Dual Season Champion.

* The lineup will not always be certain; when things look iffy, I will try to post multiple wrestlers at a given weight class, and participants should post their predictions for each wrestler. Generally, I will try to base the lineup on what is presented in the "Match Notes" published by PSU several days prior to the event.
** Tiebreaker Criteria -- Criterion 1: most correct picks; Criterion 2: most correct win types; Criterion 3: most FOS OR BWI posts.***

***This tiebreaker criteria is going to be really screwed up this year, with the BWI board going away. Additional thought will be given to it, and will likely be changed mid-season.

Hey buddy. Any chance you could create a thread for this years contest over on the new old forum on rivals? I requested they move out last years version from sticky area for this years version. Also, I was gonna do Wrestlestats picks like I did a couple years ago to see how they do. I'll clearly mark which are my picks and which are theirs.

I already had the thread started over there, but it slid down the board. Bumped it back up.

The rule is designed so that the same person isn't playing the game twice. My picks are identical on all three boards, on two of which mine were the first picks in, so that others could have an example to go by. My official picks have been on Rivals for several years.

If you think I'm inputting three different picks for myself, you obviously think I enjoy the data entry portion of this game more than I really do.

Nope, just trying to be a smart a$$ and point out teacher is breaking his own rules. But you are allowed. Carry on…

and thanks for the thankless job of doing this, just ignore my smart a$$ comments.

One thing I would mention to folks.. Probably best to put the two matches in two separate posts.. If you decide to edit after the start of the first match.. even if editing the second one... it will show it as edited and then all your picks could be DQd.. Even with both matches in one night, being able to go in last minute and change something in the OSU match after the SH match has started is always a nice out to have..

Well, then, here we go. Sacred Heart didn't make it easy on me.

Several scoring changes due to some wrestlers taking the mat that weren't on the Match Notes. Shunk wrestled Randall, instead of Faraon, but our picks were unanimous for Shunk. Everybody gets two. Blumer wrestled, instead of Bearclaw or Lee. Nobody's getting anything for that. Edsell wrestled Jarosz, instead of McGill. The picks were unanimous, except for one guy, who must have forgotten to look at Notes and picked only Facundo, but I'm pretty sure he would have picked Edsell. That's just a confusing mess, for which there is no rule, so everybody is getting two, even the guy who forgot to pick Edsell. Don't @ me, bro. And, finally, Starocci wrestled Marciniak, not Accousti. Two for all.

So, that leaves NoVa Lion and YearoftheHeisman on top of the leaderboard at 23, followed by a gaggle of 22s, a plethora of 21s, and so on.

Please get back to me with possible errors, and remember, if there are errors, charge them to my head and not to my heart. We'll get 'em straightened out.

Okay, y'all, just a couple of comments about entering picks. There are forty players, which means I am inputting 830 data points per match (400 picks, 400 win types, 10 match winners, 10 match win types, and 10 losers).

First, thanks to everyone for putting the match opponent at the top of their posts. That's helpful, because I do a page search for the opponent's name, and it highlights all of those matches. OSU versus Oregon State versus Oregon St threw me off a little, but not bad.

Next, a couple of you put "LBD" for loss by decision, or even "WBMD," for win by major decision. The WBMD is disruptive to my data entry flow, and the LBD is even worse. Please put the wrestler (or team of the wrestler) you are choosing to win, and the win type.

Please try to refrain from using nicknames. I am very fast at entering data, until my mind has to translate a nickname to an actual name. My mind gets behind my fingers, and I enter the wrong thing.

Aside from those two things, pick entry was pretty straightforward.
