From its inception, the founders of this game ran it to be above board, with as much integrity as possible. Since I took it over, I have tried my best to live up to the standards they set. Usually, that's pretty easy, as not many situations come up that test the bounds of being fair and forthright.

Then, along comes Ohio State. One KYPSW player, at 7:55 Friday night, opened his picks message, because he realized that he had written, "Barraclough DEC any PSU," instead of "Barraclough DEC any OSU." After realizing what he had done, he texted me immediately to tell me. Thus started a weekend of figuring out the right thing to do.

Fortunately, this game has explicit rules for most things that come up, and it also has precedents for most things for which there are not rules. In the past, one or two guys didn't get their picks in until 20 or 30 minutes after the start of a dual. In those cases, to the best of my ability, I figured out which matches they should score zero in, and they received zero points up to that point of the dual.

That precedent is the closest I can come to a situation like this. I know Hockeygod didn't change anything other than the PSU to OSU in that message, and I 100% don't expect anyone that plays to cheat this game, but to remain consistent to the precedent, I have to take away Hockeygod's points through 149.

Let this be a lesson to everyone...Don't put your picks in late, and don't open your picks after the start of the match.

Everybody got two at 133, and, unfortunately, 157-174 are all thrown out, because the wrong guy went, and the picks for each weight weren't unanimous.

Okay, everyone, I've got issues. As if you all weren't already aware.

In year's past, I had 100% confidence in these results. Not so much this year. There was a major SUBAR mid-season, when some of you maybe saw an updated rankings, followed by them disappearing. Well, that led to a massive amount of time spent re-entering massive amounts of data. By the time I was done, I was spent.

So, below are the final* dual season standings, and here is the spreadsheet. If you think there is an error, please use the spreadsheet and let me know where you think the error occurred. The tab that opens has the individual dual scores, beginning at A1. Individual duals are in tabs across the bottom. If I don't hear from anyone by mid-week, we'll call them final.

And, I do apologize for the screw-up. I will have a plan in place to prevent this from happening next year.

KYPSW B1G Championships

Description

The B1G Championships functions as a qualifier tournament for Nationals. The B1G will automatically qualify a certain number of wrestlers per weight class, based on their placing at the B1G Championships. The auto-qualifiers (AQs) will number as follows:

125: 10
133: 10
141: 7
149: 7
157: 7
165: 7
174: 8
184: 12
197: 11
285: 9

In addition, there is a need to determine an extra place finish beyond the AQ at each weight to identify the wrestler that falls one place short of being an AQ, per one of the criteria needed to attain “Bronze Standard” for eligibility to obtain an “at-large” berth to Nationals. Long-story-short, for any weights where there are 8 or more AQ, those weights will be wrestled to AQ+1 placements.

What You Need To Do
For each of the 10 PSU wrestlers competing at the B1G Championships, predict his:
(1) Place Finish, per the placing categories listed below for each weight class; and
(2) Total Number of Bonus Points (to the nearest half-point) scored during the tournament EXCLUDING matches wrestled to determine 9th place through 14th place.

All predictions must be posted in this thread by 10:00 AM Eastern on Saturday, March 7th.

Placing Categories, By Weight Class

125: 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th, 5th, 6th, 7th, 8th, 9th, 10th, 11th, or “DNP”

133: 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th, 5th, 6th, 7th, 8th, 9th, 10th, 11th, or “DNP”
141: 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th, 5th, 6th, 7th, 8th, or “DNP”
149: 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th, 5th, 6th, 7th, 8th, or “DNP”
157: 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th, 5th, 6th, 7th, 8th, or “DNP””
165: 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th, 5th, 6th, 7th, 8th, or “DNP”
174: 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th, 5th, 6th, 7th, 8th, 9th, or “DNP”
184: 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th, 5th, 6th, 7th, 8th, 9th, 10th, 11th, 12th, 13th, or 12thor “DNP”
197: 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th, 5th, 6th, 7th, 8th, 9th, 10th, 11th, 12th,or “DNP”
285: 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th, 5th, 6th, 7th, 8th, 9th, 10th, or “DNP”

*Note: As you can see, there is a minimum of 8 place finishes for each weight class. We essentially predict the placing based on the number of AQs +1 for all weights with at least 8 auto-qualifiers. Beyond that, we predict “DNP” for “does not place”.

Scoring

For each PSU wrestler, you will be awarded “Placement Points” based on your prediction for where the wrestler places in the tournament. You will also be awarded “Bonus Points” based on your predicted number of bonus points scored by the wrestler (excluding extra matches wrestled for 9th-14th place). The scoring structure for Placement Points and Bonus Points are listed below.

Placement Points
30 points for predicting a wrestler's place finish exactly (includes the “DNP” category)
25 points for a prediction being off by 1 place
20 points for a prediction being off by 2 places
15 points for a prediction being off by 3 places
10 points for a prediction being off by 4 places
0 points for a prediction being off by 5 or more places
Note: Any "DNP" finish is considered 1 place away from the final placement position for the weight.

Bonus Points
4 points awarded for predicting a wrestler's bonus point total exactly (to the nearest half-point)
3 points awarded for a prediction that is off by 0.5 points
2 points awarded for a prediction that is off by 1.0 points
1 points awarded for a prediction that is off by 1.5 points
0 points awarded for a prediction that is off by 2.0 or more points
Note: Major Decision = 1.0 bonus points; Tech Fall = 1.5 bonus points; Fall, Medical Forfeit, Injury Default, and Disqualification = 2.0 bonus points.

The maximum attainable score under this system is 340 points. Tiebreaker criteria are (1) most placement points, (2) most “30-point” placement predictions, (3) most “25-point” placement predictions, (4) most “20-point” placement predictions, (5) most “15-point” placement predictions, (6) most “10 point” placement predictions, and (7) most Rivals or 24/7 posts.

Example Predictions/Outcomes/Scoring

Example 1. I predict Wrestler A to finish 5th and score 1.5 bonus points. Wrestler A actually places 1st and scores 2.0 bonus points. I receive 10 Placement Points (1st – 5th = -4 = 10 pts) and 3 Bonus Points (2.0 – 1.5 = 0.5 = 3 pts) for a total of 13 points for my Wrestler A weight class prediction.

Example 2. I predict Wrestler B to finish 9th in a 9 AQ weight class and score 2.0 bonus points. Wrestler B actually places 4th and scores 4.0 bonus points. I receive 0 Placement Points (4th – 9th = -5 = 0 pts) and 0 Bonus Points (4.0 – 2.0 = 2.0 = 0 pts) for a total of 0 points for my Wrestler B weight class prediction.

Example 3. I predict Wrestler C to finish “DNP” and score 0.0 bonus points in a weight class with 8 AQ. Wrestler C actually finishes 7th and scores 1.0 bonus points. I receive 20 Placement Points (7th – DNP = 2 = 20 pts) and 2 Bonus Points (1.0 – 0.0 = 1.0 = 2 pts) for a total of 22 points for my Wrestler C weight class prediction.

Example 4. I predict Wrestler D to place 9th and score 1.5 bonus points. Wrestler D actually withdraws after his first match, does not place in the top 10, and scores 0.0 bonus points. I receive 20 Placement Points (DNP – 9th = 2 = 20 pts) and 1 Bonus Point (0.0 – 1.5 = -1.5 = 1 pt) for a total of 21 points for my Wrestler D weight class prediction.

I will post a link to B1G pre-seeds when they are announced and actual seeds and brackets when they become available.

Again, all predictions must be posted in this thread by 10:00 AM Eastern on Saturday, March 5th.

Although these scores will be compiled with the Dual Season and Nationals scores to crown an overall season champion, all are welcome to join this particular event to be crowned B1G champion. Good luck!

Anyone who didn't play in the dual season should feel free to jump into B1G and NCAA. They will roll up to the grand champion, but each one is also a standalone contest. The prizes are truly unbelievable.

I'm pretty sure I have never participated in the B1G Tourney or NCAA components of KYPSW. And after I see my scores next week, I'll probably wish I had kept the streak going.

Having had no serious challenges to these results, I am now calling them final.

Congratulations to nittinsc for capturing the dual season portion of KYPSW for 2021-22! As you can see from the results, this was a tight race, with RoarLions and NoVaLion nipping at nittinsc's heels. The tie at 6 and 7 went to Acacia, by virtue of about twice and many posts as tomsc. And Tom McAndrew earns the eighth and last spot on the podium.

Everyone, enjoy your bragging rights. And, when you tell people that you are on the podium for KYPSW's dual season portion, please report their reactions on here. Please.

Finally, your prizes will be in the mail. Sometime. And, KYPSW B1G results, as well as NCAA contest rules will be posted today. Be on the lookout.

Here are the B1G tournament results. So, I put the message out inviting anyone who didn't play in the dual season to go ahead and join in, and guess what? Two of those guys end up on top of the podium. Zestypizza and jack66, who didn't play all season long, come in and finish 1 and 2, respectively. Congratulations, zesty, you are a B1G champion!

Verolion, fearing that he'll come in last on the season, actually comes up big in 3rd, followed by HR favorite johnstownsteel. Hey, johnstown, you should go tell HR you finished on the podium for KYPSW B1G. I think they'll be happy for you. Zep is rocking 5th, with PSUPaul repping NEPA in 6th. It doesn't happen often, but yours truly ends up in 7th place, and the tie between 98lber and loyalandtrue2 goes to 98lber, with about 500 more board posts.

Congratulations to all, and be on the lookout shortly for the NCAA rules.

Know Your Penn State Wrestlers Competition – Nationals 2021

Here it is, the third and final installment of the 2022 Know Your Penn State Wrestlers competition. Nationals! We will crown an NCAA Tournament Champion, and then an Overall KYPSW 2021 Champion. 900 points are available for this competition.

What You Need To Do

For each of the 9 PSU wrestlers, predict his:
(1) Place finish as 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th, 5th, 6th, 7th, 8th, R12, or R16+
(2) Cumulative bonus points scored, to the nearest 0.5 pts

Notes:

- R12 means the wrestler reaches the “Round of 12”, but does not advance.

- R16+ means the wrestler is eliminated from the tournament within the “Round of 16” or earlier.

- All predictions must be posted in this thread by 11:00 AM Eastern on Thursday, March 17st.

Scoring

For each PSU wrestler, you will be awarded “Placement Points” based on your prediction for where the wrestler places in the tournament. You will also be awarded “Bonus Points” based on your predicted number of bonus points scored by the wrestler. The scoring structure for Placement Points and Bonus Points are listed below.

Placement Points
90 points for correct prediction
80 points for prediction off by 1 place
70 points for prediction off by 2 places
55 points for prediction off by 3 places
40 points for prediction off by 4 places
20 points for prediction off by 5 places
0 points for prediction off by 6+ places

Notes:

- R12 will be treated functionally as “10th place”, meaning it is considered 2 place finishes below 8th for purposes of the contest.
- R16+ will be treated functionally as “14th place”, meaning it is considered 4 place finishes below R12 and 6 place finishes below 8th for purposes of the contest.

Examples:

I'm pretty sure I have never participated in the B1G Tourney or NCAA components of KYPSW. And after I see my scores next week, I'll probably wish I had kept the streak going.

talk about calling it -- I came in tied for next to last in the B1G competition. smh

Man, I almost forgot about this. Why didn't someone remind me?

Somebody better get a bucket of water, because psueb was on absolute fire for NCAAs. He got 8 of the 9 placements spot on, as well as 4 of the bonus points. I'd have to go back and look, but that might be the best anyone has ever done.

Slush tried to hang on, but couldn't keep the Nick Lee pace of eb, dropping to 2nd. Philflyboy picks up the bronze, nipping at Slush's heels. Verolion slots in at number 4.

Tomsc and Zep came down to the final tiebreaker for the 5th and 6th spots, which tomsc wins, by about 700 messages. Nittinsc and Random(numbers) round out the podium.

As always, check my work, and let me know if you see anything wrong, before I call them final.

Edit: An error was found, which changed the podium slightly. Random got knocked off the podium, replaced by jack66.

If there was ever a year that showed the effect of the big points from Nationals, this was it. It jumped several way up the leaderboard, and was devastating to a couple of frontrunners.

98lber got his wish, and ended up on the podium at 8th. ZepGraffiti plays podium rock in the 7th position, with Verolion bringing up 6th.

At 5th, and special mention, is tomsc. Tomsc is the ONLY returning podium finisher from last year, I believe. The other sc, nittinsc, comes in at number 4.

And, in the bronze position, we have philflyboy. Silver is picked up by one of the originators of the contest, but someone who hasn't played the last couple of years, slushhead.

And, standing at the top of the podium, the dominating performance of psueb52! Congratulations, eb, you are the KYPSW 2021-22 Champion! You get the bragging rights, and all of the other great prizes that go along with it, which pretty much means you get the bragging rights.

Finally, the award that has to be given, but the one that no one wants, the Minkle. This is given to the player that played every week, plus B1G and NCAA, but just came up short, way short. This used to also be known as the ***** prize, but you can't say ***** anymore. The winner of the, um, esteemed, Minkle Award is Nittany Sluggo. In a new twist this year, Nittany Sluggo will be providing the prize to psueb52. I'm sure it will be in the mails soon.

Thanks for playing, and as always, if you find errors, please let me know.
