I absolutely love me some OWEH and BUTLER, but between them (and tossing in Williams), we probably had about 500 wtf missed layups this season.
Love all three of those guys, they played their butts off, but wow, the missed layups were unbelievable.
Amari missed at least 10 in the NCAAT and Oweh missed 3 or 4 in the illinois game, one was on a breakout that should have been a dunk.

Agree. For as much as I like Oweh, he’s a guard who doesn’t have the best of handles, is just average from 3 (at best), had a hard time finishing around the rim, and has mediocre athleticism for his position in the NBA. No GM is clamoring to draft a guy like that.
He's a great college basketball player, absolutely awesome on a college court, but the NBA is a completely different game and he doesn't fit there… ..yet.

Good comp but I'd argue Oweh is a better shooter, even with the funky form.

And Oweh did miss a lot of layups but he was clutch when needed as he had a couple of game winners. Goodwin would've never hit those.
I agree, but we only got to see Arch as a freshman, Oweh was a junior. I bet Archie and Oweh are/were pretty close to the same player at whatever age OO is.
That is a really good comparison. They both had monster poster dunks over the top of someone too. Unfortunately, the stupid ref in 2013 called an offensive foul.

What team were you watching, not UK? Well for one, he drove to the basket more than anyone at UK in a long time. Maybe since Andrew or even further back to Bogans. So naturally more drives means both more misses and makes. And for two, most of his misses is because the refs were allowing him to get hammered at the basket much more than they let other players do. It was beyond "playing through contact".

Secondly, Edwards missed a whole lot more layups (& dunks) than anyone I've ever seen. To me Edwards is the worst finisher at UK I've seen in the 40+ years I've been watching. But then again it's hard to finish when you can't jump (I should know).
Agree to disagree then. I don't know how anyone could say Oweh was an efficient finisher. He may not have been AS bad as Edwards, but Oweh missed a ton of layups.

As far as OO getting fouled, well, that was the SEC this year and everyone knew it. You have to finish through contact. Even skinny assed Chad Baker-Mazara could finish through contact. That's part of it.

But we're talking about OO's value to the NBA, well, you better be able to finish through contact up there, or you won't be seeing a 2nd contract, especially if you can't shoot.

Most of Oweh's misses were a result of him getting hammered. Most other players would have been shooting 2 FTs as a result. And it wasn't because the SEC is more physical (which it is). Other SEC players would have gone to the FT line when fouled like him.

You don't think Oweh was the only one getting fouled going to the basket, do you?

Everyone got fouled, if you got an open run at the basket, consider yourself very lucky.

Heck, Oweh missed a breakaway layup in the Illinois game on top of several other misses at the rim. He didn't get fouled on that run out.

He hits the lane so hard and fast that the ball has a ton of velocity on it and on top of that, he tries to avoid contact. At his size, he should be trying to finish through contact every time.

Oweh shot more twos than any UK guard since DeAaron Fox. They both made 52% of their twos. I don’t know what his percentage was on layups, but when you shoot that many you’re going to miss some and we fans are going to remember it because it’s a freaking layup.

It’s been a while for me, but I don’t recall Archie Goodwin hitting a layup. I do recall him hitting the ground a lot after doing his best Adou Thiero impersonation as he flopped and flailed around.

The amount of bunnies missed by Amari, Butler, and Oweh was pretty remarkable though, especially in the tourney.

Archie was pretty bad from 3, that’s for sure. He was also on a far worse team once Noel went down and was often left trying to do anything he could to score as the shot clock was winding down. Just the best comparison I could think of for Oweh.
This.

Goodwin’s fellow teammates were:

Ryan Harrow ( who left the the team)
Jarrod Polson
Julius Mayes
Jon Hood
Kyle Wiltjer
Poythress

None of those guys could create for theirselves and it left Goodwin as the only person who could beat his man 1v1 resulting in a lot of forced shots

Anyone else kinda think Otega may take a serious look at the NBA? We’re pretty loaded at guard already, and I just don’t see us bringing in a Wilkerson or Pierre if he’s expected to be staying.
I think Pope is trying to bring in a replacement before he announces. Nothing else really makes sense.

Maybe but I have a hard time trusting anything polacheck puts out. Pilgrim got some leeway back with Mo D but polacheck is not great

Pilgrim scooped Mo D and JQ before anyone else had it, all within 24 hours of a commitment.

If he gets this scoop on Garrison correct, it'll be hard to argue that he has those connections back.

EVERYONE is trying to buy players anymore. Money is driving damn near every recruiting decision at this point.
Sad if this is really all we have left in recruiting. This hurts us more than most because KENTUCKY on the front of our jerseys was meaningful in recruiting.

JQ’s dad said one of the reasons they picked UK was because Pope went into great detail, more than any other coach, on how he’d be used next season. So, while money is a big factor, I don’t believe it is the sole decision for most guys.

Yup. Money is a prerequisite. Just like you need a ticket to hear a band ..you need the money for a recruit to listen to your pitch

Believe me I want pilgrim to be correct here. Wilkerson is my favorite portal player. He is Chaz Lanier 2.0. I really hope Kentucky gets him

It has felt like we have been "one player away" for multiple years here. Which sucks.

This past year we were missing another guy who could just go get you a bucket, no matter what. Oweh could do it to a point, but we needed another playmaker/shot creator like that.

In 2023, we just needed 3 of the 5 freshman to be really, really good in order to make a Final Four. Only 2 of them ended up doing that, while Bradshaw/Edwards/Wagner really struggled.

2022 we needed another scorer/shooter desperately, but Cal wouldn't do it because he was protecting Wheeler/Livingston/Toppin, etc., he barely even took Antonio Reeves and sat him on the bench half the year!

In 2010 we needed a shooter besides Darnell freakin' Dodson, cost us against WVU.

In 2016 we needed a reliable big man with a pulse, wasted one of the best backcourts in America with Murray/Ulis.

In 2019 we needed a wing scorer off the bench, all we had was Jemarl Baker backing up Herro/Keldon Johnson, which came back to bite us against Auburn when Herro really struggled.

Etc. etc.

It has just always felt like we filled the cup up about 90-95% of the way, instead of getting that last piece to take us to 105%.

And despite how well the portal has gone so far, it feels like that with this roster still. Get a guy like Wilkerson/Yates/Pierre, and I don't feel like that anymore.

$$$ gets you in the room. Unless you pony up much more than the others, it's the details that seal the deal.

Thanks Nike.

Seriously, why don't we drop Nike and become the top dog for UA, Reebok, Puma, heck even New Balance lol?
I’m sure this is an unpopular opinion, but if UK went to New Balance I might go bankrupt from buying so much gear. I love New Balance. I’ve also been protesting Nike ever since they broke our logo, so I am way past due for some new shirts, hats, hoodies, etc.
Shoot, they already have several former Cats signed like Jamal Murray, Tyrese Maxey, and Sydney McLaughlin-Levrone. Unfortunately, they also signed Cooper Flagg but that’s neither here nor there.

I would be all for this switch!
