I would rather see Barry at the point for 9-10 of his min per game than Randy at the 2 for 35 min per game. We need to find a place for Phil Turner to play some. We will need a real shooting guard to take pressure off of teams collapsing on our big guys. I hope that Phil and Ravern can be fairly consistent outside shots. We can't afford to have someone as inconsistent as Randy "creating" or hoisting up 0-for efforts. (and yes I recall how well he did in the SEC tournament....credit where credit is due) If we get that, opposing team's defenses are really going to clog up the lane.

For additional consideration:

Where does Osby play?
Is it possible that Augustus could get some min at the 3?
Might Benock be the outside zone buster three point shooter?

Hate hate on barry, who played all of last season with screws still in his damn foot
but still was able to be our best defender and constantly shutdown the other teams best players,
all while still shooting .365 from 3pt overall and .388 in conference
Yes he was damn streaky at points, but when we needed a clutch 3 in a game, it was usally him he took the shot and made it.

As far as your other questions, Osby is being looked to play more minutes at the 3 this season,
and sliding down to the 4 when sidney/kodi arent in possibly. He is overseas this summer,
and will be trying to develop a more outside game.

Kodi is a 4, nd will share time with sidney

Benock could be that, as long as noone is withing 5 feet of him,
if he has any pressure at all he will not shot, and if he does he will not make it.

i think the problem most people have with barry is how much he seems to drive into the lane and get destroyed. i like his defense and i'm fine with his perimeter play

someone mentioned they heard stans was on a trip to recruit him.

Paul Jones already squashed it though..no truth to it.

I even once broke down on here
his strictly 2pt% shooting percentage (removing 3s from overall shots to isolate 2pts)
was HORRIBLE

But he also wasnt doing it that often.
Also, it was a product of the situation with only having one big man
and unable to clear the lane.

With two big this year, the lane should be open more
for barry and all other guards.

Scooba,
I don't blame Coach Stans for playing Barry as much as he did. Barry is a rock solid defender who earns his minutes. He is not a good option when it comes to creating his own shot, which he was often asked to do (not his fault I guess?). That is my beef.

Where do you see Phil Turner playing next season and for approximately how many minutes? Do you think Twanny backing up Dee (for ~7-8 min per game) will be better than Turner playing 2 while Barry handles the point for those min?

I think it is a great problem to have when you struggle to find enough minutes for all your talented players. Thanks coach Stans.

I think the lane will be completely clogged this year with us having multiple talented (scoring) big men in the game at the same time. I think teams will collapse to defend down low and when we kick it out we will have to make the open shots.

I hope we can work on our spacing, interior passing, and inside outside passing so that guys like Ravern or whomever can nail the open threes.

What I hope we don't see is Varnardo or Sidney powering through triple teams, or Kodi airballing fade aways over two defenders.

We will see.

Osby at the 3 last year when he first started getting some minutes there but having him and Augustus playing together wasn't too bad as Augustus is capable of hitting the outside shot and Osby can post up. My understanding is that Sidney will slide to the 5 and Augustus and Osby will come in at the 4 and 3 respectively. I think Turner is going to play more of a rotation with Stewart. Regardless, if the starters are Varnado, Sidney, Johnson, Stewart and Bost then a substitution of of Bailey (or Riek if he is healthy), Augustus, Osby, Turner and Beckham at the respective positions isn't too bad.

That would require Stans to full court press for a game...has that ever happened?

It would be nice, i agree...but possible?

You don't think Barry is a good option to create a shot for himself, but you want him to play PG where his primary job would be creating shots for others? Do you know anything about basketball? Barry should never play PG ever. We tried it his sophomore year, and he was a complete failure there. SG is where he'll stay and where he belongs.

would be to get the ball up the floor and not turn it over for the 7-10 minutes Bost needs to rest. That's all we need. That's all we'd ask out of Beckham anyway. Barry can give us minutes at the point, particularly with this surrounding cast.

I must say I don't understand all the hate directed toward Barry with regard to him driving to the basket. I'm at least as comfortable with Barry driving as Dee because they make the shots with comparable percentages. Actually, Barry has better shooting percentages than Dee in the three categories of free throws, three pointers, and from the field overall. I haven't seen anyone call out Dee for his poor shooting percentage from the field or his inability to finish around the basket. While neither one of them are particularly good finishers I don't like the one-sided angst towards Barry.

As I said, I compared his strictly 2pt % 12 games into the sec schedule, which was..27? games into the year
in this thread

At the time he was 13 of 50 on 2pt attempts, for 26% in 12 sec games
and was not looking good at all driving to the lane. But he finished the season strong

In the last 4 SEC Games, he was 7 of 14, 50%
So for all 16 SEC Games, Barry was 20 of 64 for .313
For the season overall, Barry was 54-146 for .370

Comparing those numbers to Dee on the season
exactly the same for the whole season 54-146 .370
In SEC Only,16 games, Dee was 25-66 .379

I agree, the constant bashing of Barry is for the most part blown out of proportion
but one reason could be because Barry is a Jr while Dee was only a Fr this season.

Dee is going to play ~30 min and he is probably going to get better than he was last year. I have no complaint with him. We are lucky to have such a solid, young point.

Run these numbers: Twanny Beckham's vs Phil Turner's because that is the point I am trying to make. If Barry goes to the point for ~10 min per game, Turner would then have some minutes at the 2. We will not be in the 4 guard lineup next year and Osby should be pushing for minutes at the 3 along with Ravern, so we need to find some minutes for Phil. If Barry is playing 35 min per game at the 2, that leaves very little time for Phil to see the floor. A solution to that is for Barry to play the point. He was servicable sp? last year, and maybe I am dreaming, but I seem to recall about 4-5 underhanded layups by Beckham that were smooth REJECTED. Those don't factor well into your 2 pt %.
