Tony Barnhardt is reporting Lane Kiffin to UT is a done deal. Ed Orgeron apparently will come onboard to handle recruiting. Don;t have a link yet...if this is old news, screw me.

They were reporting this on Memphis radio on Monday. Hell of a hire if true

What has Kiffin done that suggests he can win in the SEC or specifically the SEC East. Having said that, he will probably win the NC in his first year but i am not sold on it as a home run.

Heard the rumors on Mon as well...Barnhart is the first I've heard to call it a done deal. Apparently UT is planning the announcement next Monday...the Sat KY game at Neyland is PF appreciation day.

He made the Raiders somewhat competitive. That is a miracle in itself

And i am sure Orgeron will recruit well, but it will be tough vs. Richt, Spurrier, and Meyer. not to mention battling for recruits with Saban and Tubs. I know Orgeron was at Ole Miss but he didn't win a lot of battles with those guys in recruiting.

If you give Orgeron the resources that Tennessee has he will have no problem getting top notch athletes to come there. He brought some damn good talent to Ole Miss. I imagine he will do even better in Knoxville. C0-DC and recruiting coordinator is the perfect job for him

I'd take Kiffin in a heartbeat. I think he'll do fine in college because while he is also an NFL caliber coach who apparently was fired because Al Davis is senile, and it was just a couple of years ago that he was the OC of one of the top offenses in the country at Southern Cal, so he's not that far removed from the college game.

I don't know about having O on staff, and I really don't know about having him as a DC, although he may be better as a DC without HC responsibilities and with UT talent. I think the biggest reason he would come on board is because I'm sure Kiffin and O know each other from their USC days.

And as far as competing with other coaches in the SEC, there is only one bad coach in the SEC, and unfortunately he's in Starkville. That's just the culture of the SEC. UT needs someone like a Kiffin that is on par with the rest of the coaches in the conference.

This is a good hire for the rest of the SEC. Making O a co-dc will be a nightmare. The man does not get along well w/ others and is just a little bit stubborn. Also, the whole co-dc thing is really working well at LSU so why not repeat it. They should have offered Butch Davis 4mil and then gone from there to Kelly, Patterson, then Peterson.

Hey guys, been lurking for a bit just reading about the Bulldogs since most of the people I know cheer for them and I like to know what they are talking about.

The UT boards have rumored this for a while. Kiffin as the HC; and rumor has it his dad, Monte, will be leaving the Bucs to finish his coaching days with his son. Coach O, would be head of recruiting, D-line, and sort of a Defensive Coordinator in waiting. Another one has Kevin Steele coming back to Knoxville as the DC. It's all rumor though, there are a select few on the UT boards that really know what's going on and they are being pretty tight lipped about it. Most think there will be some sort of announcement next week though.

w/ a playoff team to be co-dc w/ ed orgeron. Riiiiiight. I heard if kevin steele turns it down, bill parcels will take it so you pretty much have the dc position locked up.

Is it really that hard to believe that a coach in the twilight of his career would choose to finish things out by trying to help his son succeed as a head coach?

As a Raiders fan I can tell you they are definitely not playing better without Kiffin. Firing him was dumb as hell. And Orgeron will be fine in that spot. He is not HC material but can recruit like hell and take care of parts of the defense

Well, the dude is almost 80 years old. And, the rumor in Oakland was that one of the reasons Kiffin wanted out was because he wanted to bring his father on board and Granny Davis said no. I don't find it that hard to believe. It's not like he's chasing an elusive championship in Tampa.

I never said anything about co-DC with Coach O. This is the first time I've read that. Everything I've read that mentions Monte has him coming for about 3 years or so and then retiring and handing the reigns over to someone like a Coach O.

I think they could've taken a bit more time and found someone even better. They practically had Kiffin hired before they ever ran Fulmer off. That usually doesn't turn out the way folks intend it to. I don't think he'll flop, but I could see them doing the 8-win thing for a few years, and the UT fans expecting 11 wins a year will run him off too.

Plus, I just don't get the Orgeron thing. They can't find a guy who can recruit and also isn't a complete moron?

Totally agree. Orgeron is one of the biggest boneheads in the coaching profession. It's amazing to me that people want to give him a job above that of DL coach.

Not really. Nobody said he wasn't a great recruiter, they just said he was a terrible head coach

it was pretty clear that he was a great recruiter, and it was pretty clear that he was not head coach material.

SC hasn't really dropped much since Ed left. Pete hasn't had any problem recruiting without Ed.

Ed won't sign any better classes at UT than they have been. They've been a top 10 rank in recruiting every year except 2 since 2002.

about how his recruiting was way overrated and a figment of our fanbase's imagination? Or how state obviously had far more talent because they had a better record? Seriously. After he got fired I said something about how I hoped that he didn't land anywhere where he would be competing with us and most everybody laughed and said he recruited so well that he went 0-8 in the conference. Now that we are playing for the cotton bowl it's all due to Eddie O's incredible recruiting.

but think of the potential fashion statement of the entire Vol fanbase. Orange shirts and white boots! Hell yeah, somebody with some capital might wanna get an exclusive distribution deal for the east Tennessee area on the shrimper boots.

Too lazy....somebody please fark it.

There were multitudes upon multitudes of discussions after February 2006 about how Orgeron's recruits were overrated.

When we went on to win 3 (or was it 4? as if it matters...) games that year, there were more discussions about how Orgeron's recruits got extra stars because he openly lobbied for it to scout.com, and they all liked him and he was friends with them.

I remember thread after thread about that here.

Not that there's anything wrong with that. Outside of his 2006 class, his recruiting WAS way overrated. 2/3 of his first class never made it past 1 season and Ole Miss will end up with 10-12 contributors (and thats being generous) out of the 23 he signed (he had either 26 or 27 slots to give...) in the 2007 class.

And, if it wasn't for Nutt and his staff, the 2006 class would still look like a massive bust. Instead, guys like McCluster, Cornell, Vaughn, Hardy, Lockett, Tillman, Hodge, Eason, Jerry, etc are big in the success of this team.
