Had an argument the other day with a friend about this. I don't think there is any doubt. Help me understand how much of a 17tard that friend is.

I just don't see him as the most prominent player of his era to be a 1st ballot HOFer. He's going to make it but very few get the first ballot nod.

Easily 1st ballot.
#3 all time in hits and HRs by a switch hitter.
A career .300 batter.
2500 hits.
Over 1500 RBIs.
500 doubles.
Nearly 500 HRs.
7 time All Star.
MVP.
2 time Silver Slugger.

He's also a Gold Glover at 3B. Would've had more if Scott Rolen wasn't in the NL for a bunch of those years. And he's a career .300+ hitter. If he's not a first ballot HOF player, I don't know what one is.

He will be aided by the fact that he was clean throughout the steroid era. This means that he will be on the ballot with the roiders and get votes simply because he isn't in the group. He is deserving even so, that will just make his % higher.

But I know that he wants to retire as a Brave....even though he could go to an AL team and be a DH and add even more offensive numbers to his HOF credentials.
#10 loves the game....is as big a competitor as I've ever seen...and is a 1st ballot HOF'er...no doubt.

He will be a first-ballot guy without question and absolutely should be.<div>
</div><div>One of the best pure hitters I've ever seen, and he can still get it done despite having no legs. Just a gorgeous swing.</div><div>
</div><div>Your friend is an idiot. He would be in today if they let him.</div>

I'm not sure he could make another season even as a DH. He's having fluid removed from his knees every couple of weeks or so now, it seems. Plus, he's always struggling with the recurring oblique injury.

That would leave him 3 short of 500.

I don't really think he'll hit 43 HRs this year.... just a stat to think about. I hope he can bat about .275 with 20 HRs and 85 or so RBI and ride on out into the sunset. Maybe an NLCS appearance or more.

ETA: He is also on pace for 151 RBI.... unless my math is terribly wrong.

Last edit: My math was terribly wrong... those projections were based on him playing 162 games. He has only played in 15 so my numbers are way off. He's already missed 10 games.

Absolutely he is. I've heard Tim Kurkjian say that he is the best No. 1 overall draft choice in MLB history. Not only has he gotten it done, he's gotten it done under the pressure and spotlight of being the No. 1 pick. A lot of 18 year olds would have folded under that pressure. He's athletically and mentally strong. 1st ballot without a doubt.

until you start comparing stats. The difference b/t Mantle and Chipper is not as great as you think (or I thought).<div>
</div><div>Compare the 162 game averages over the course of their careers (Mantle 18 yrs, Jones 19 counting this season)</div><div>
</div><div>Mantle .298, 23 doubles, 5 triples, 36 HR, 102 RBI, .977 OPS, 10 SB, 3 CS, 117 BB, 105 K</div><div>Jones .304, 36 doubles, 3 triples, 31 HR, 106 RBI, .934 OPS, 10 SB, 3 CS, 98 BB, 92 K</div><div>
</div><div>The biggest difference between the two is that Mantle had a 6 to 8 year span where his numbers put him as the best in baseball at the time. Chipper never put together individual seasons that matched Mantle's best years, but Jones has actually had more quality years than Mantle.</div><div>
</div><div>Mantle at his best was clearly better than Chipper at his best, but if you compare careers Chipper is a much closer #2 than expected.</div><div>

no way, it kills me to see this Braves bias crap

ONE time MVP never higher than 4th any other year, 7 time all-star in 19 seasons which means he wasn't even a top 2 best players at his position in his league for more than 1/2 his career. Never led the league in HR's, Runs, RBI's, and has ONE batting average title. And playing for 1 team or 12 teams shouldn't make a difference at all.

Was he good, sure he was good but he was not outstanding at anything but sticking around a long time and compiling. Definitely NOT a first ballot HOF

He's very good not great... put him with the Todd Heltons, Lance Berkmans... etc. He just isn't a first ballot hall of famer. Just a notch below.

but even I think he should be one. I've had a reason to detest nearly every player that has worn a Braves uniformover the last 20 years, but for some reason, I've never had anything but respect for Chipper. He got kinda overshadowed during the Roid era, but he never did anything other than show up and play. My hat's off to him

You're forgetting (or never knew), that he spent a couple of his prime years playing LF, for the sake of the ballclub. He had been an AS 5 of the previous 6 years (with the exception being his MVP year!), so it's reasonable to say he would have had a couple more, and he missed others solely because he was hurt.

He was in the top 12 for MVP9 times!

HRs and RBI's are the most overrated statistics, and Runs is dependent on the rest of your team. OBP is the most important statistic, and he kills in that stat. In 12 straight years he had an OBP over .400 11 times. Career OBP over .400.

Add to that he was one of the top 2 gloves at his position, WITH an MVP (many HOFers have none), and he's an easy choice. Compilers don't make top 12 MVP lists barely ever. Chipper did it 9 times. And he did it by all accounts CLEAN during the steroid era. He's definitely a 1st balloter.

mayplay a bigger part in this than has been discussed so far. Between Bonds, Sosa, and Caminiti,7 of the MVP awards during Chipper's career went to known or highly suspected 'roid users. We'd have to go year by year to figure out who ahead of Jones in the voting was dirty.
