there was an obvious talent gap between our Bulldogs and them. We gave valant defensive efforts (for a while) but we never could move the ball. Will Chris Relf be able to move the ball against the league's best defenses?

I feel we will be able to move it better this year. For one reason and that is the stability of our oline. I f online stays healthy we can move the ball. Plus having a running threat at QB will take pressure off the Running Backs.

Losing Dixon hurts there is no doubt there. Vick Ballard has to step up in a hurry. maybe Rob Elliot has something left in the tank but i have all most written him off. And it seemed liked the coaches have as well after watching the spring game several times.

Which is why the most important thing for Chris Relf this year is being at least serviceable in the passing game.

Relf threw a couple of great looking fade passes against Bammer- one dropped and one deflected....his ability to stretch the defenses will help us. Without a doubt, he is going to have to be able to complete some passes in those games for us to move the ball effectively. And as a full-time player, he should be able to. Bammer will be good on defense, but not as good as they were last season.

That being said, we arent going to put up 28 points vs Bammer or Fla- We have to hope we can get to 20 points, run clock, and our defense is able to hold up to keep us in the game

Our only chance in those games is that we get 2 or 3 turnovers. That would set us up with a short field hopefully and obviously limit theirpossessions.<div>
</div><div>I dont have much faith in MSU's WRs though. Mullen has called them out several times since the end of the spring.</div><div>
</div><div>Final note: As fans, I think we can all but forget those two games.</div>

distracted most of the sec can hold little hope agianst bama. between saban being , IMO, the best coach in college football, bama's tradition, bama's money, and bama's willingness to do, well, whatever it takes. they are going to be very very good for the forseeable future. hate to say it but, it is what it is, IMO>

And really, Bama and Florida have been the dominant programs since the league expanded. They have 17 combined appearances in the SEC title game (10 UF and 7 UA). The rest of the league combined has 19. And it would be even at 18 each except Bama was on probation one year.

by himself. He needs somebody that can get deep. I don't think we have that guy on our roster and I have my doubts that he's in the freshman class.

more than 4-5 games if Relf is taking more than about 65-70% of the snaps. If he is, that means Russell sucks and we do not need Russell to suck. If Relf is taking all of the snaps, his running lanes will disappear as defenses force him to beat them through the air. while there is no doubt he is a better passer this year, how much is still in question. he has always thrown better in practice than in games...he's just not going to be an every down QB and if we have to try to turn him into one, then we are in big trouble. We need Russell to be able to step in and take the pressure off of him when necessary and to give defenses more things to think about. while there are plenty of people who agree with "if relf gets injured we're screwed", I don't think there are near enough who understand how important it is for russell to be servicable this year.

If he can't provide a legitimate passing threat this year, we are not going bowling. That's why people need to quit hating on him and start rooting for him. His spring was very disappointing, and if his Fall is more of the same...we're screwed.

the reason we will go bowling is because Relf will be an every down QB and make some throws...you can bet he hasnt stopped working on his passing since the Spring ended

I dont look for Russell to take even 20% of the snaps...I dont see him getting many in games early on while the game is close...but I do hope he is able to play the entire 4th quarter vs Mempho

on play action passes and such...just the fact the safeties realize he can throw it deep forces them to be more hesitant than they were last season to come up

saying he should have been playing then- and he was wrong. And now, after being completely outplayed by Relf this Spring, he still touts him.

Yeah, we really need the worse QB to play more snaps this season don't we? That will make us better.

There's nothing wrong with accepting the reality that he's a REDSHIRT FRESHMAN and adjusting your expectations to reflect such. Let him ease into the game and get rid of your unrealistic expectations. If you would take your blinders off you would realize that the ideal situation for all parties is for Relf to have improved his passing skills in the offseason and be able to take 80% of the snaps. Let TR ease into the demands of SEC play and give Relf a breather ever now and again. It's a potential luxury we have NEVER had.

Relf cannot throw the ball. I'm happy he looks better throwing it this year, but he's always practiced well. if you guys think we're going to be good relying on a guy who threw a TD pass to a guy that was 10 yards behind his intended WR (and he almost over threw him)...then more power to you. I'm sorry, but I'm not buying that he's improved THAT much. I went to the 2nd spring game, and he's definitely better...but he is FAR from good. Yes, he throws a good fade, but he can't throw 20 fades a game.

I hope Coach is actually right on this one, but i doubt he is. if Relf has to play 80% plus snaps, we're not winning 7-8 games like all of these wooly people are predicting. He's not Tim Tebow, and he's not Chris Leak. When teams start making him throw to beat them, there are going to be a lot of 3 and outs.

Let me put it this way - we still need somebody who can be a passing threat; I don't care who it is...Russell, Favre, or a damn walk on we haven't heard of. But SOMEBODY has to step up to command around 40% of the snaps b/c I just don't have faith that Relf can do it alone. Just remember, other than JSU (which really doesn't count), he's had ONE GOOD GAME. ONE. If he can replicate that one game 10 times this year, then I'll happily eat crow. I'm just not counting on it. His running ability is not in question here, and he is definitely our number 1 option at this point. I just think we need a solid #2,I just don't see how that's dumb.

we're going to have to have better and more creative coaches to beat them. as long as saban is there, that's a bit of a problem, IMO>

to replace him with someone who didnt throw the ball as well as he did this Spring. Plain and simple- Relf > Russell at this point.

He doesnt have to complete that many passes to to be effective. Just be able to do it enough to keep the defense honest...Plus, having Russell in there as a sitting duck that can't run isn't going to make the offense any better- there is no threat of the run from the QB when he is in the game, making our run game less effective. So, now with Russell in the game and a less effective run-game- you are wanting him to throw it more and he doesnt throw it as well as Relf at this point.

Yeah, that makes sense- let's do that

Too inconsistent as a passer to move the chains. Something else people fail to realize is that as bad as Tyson Lee was, he was at least good at checking to a better play at the line of scrimmage. Relf is incapable of that so I expect the running game to not be as good not even including the loss of Dixon. Even if Dixon were returning I think the running game would not be as good due to not checking out of plays. Last, unfortunately for Relf and MSU fans is that only Ole Miss tried to defense our option game by running an attacking blitzing style of defense. Mullen's offense will take advantage of that type of defense. I am not sure Nix will be that stupid again. I predict fairly pedestrian QB play to start the year that will have the wooley fans stupidly rationalizing the at best average play by resorting to the old "we are holding back the playbook so as not to tip off some upcoming opponent." I expect this will continue until about game 4 at which point people realize Relf is extremely limited as an every down QB. We will scratch and claw to win 5-6. Maybe win 7 with lots of breaks. If Cam Newton had come I think we would have been looking at 7-8 wins (with 9 possible depending on breaks). <div>

on two out of three so far. Only players I bash are baseball players. I rarely, if ever, bash the players in football or basketball.

Your comment is ridiculous. Did you even watch the spring game? Relf is head and shoulders above Russell in doing what we want to do this year. We don't have a quarterback to be a 50/50 passing team...and if we did, we don't have the receivers.

You know what the truth is? If Russell gets MORE than 30% of the snaps, then it will be because we can't stop anyone defensively and will be playing catch up the whole 2nd half of games. That won't happen. The defense will be solid and Relf will be the QB for a MSU bowl bound team.

porta-potties last year? The reason why he didn't play over Tyson was because he SUCKED in practice. Once he got in the game, he became a player.

Are you trying to tell me that Relf kicked Tyson's *** in practice everyday both throwing and running the ball but that he was our backup QB?

Take your ******** elsewhere.

i agree with you. Relf > Russell right now. Unfortunately, whereI disagree is on the why. The why is because Russell is not very good right now, not because Relf is suddenly awesome.
I said:
we "do not need" Russell to suck.
We "need" Russell to be able to step in and play a lot of meaningful snaps (NOT, let's just put him in there while he's sucking and hope for the best)
We "need" him (or somebody, anybody, else)to provide a legitimate passing threat
I did not say to put him in if he's not effective. I did say we had better hope he gets it together so that he CAN be effective. I did not even say that he WILL be effective....only that we'd better HOPE he can get there between now and September. I just think Relf needs somebody who can supplement him. If he takes 80%+ of the snaps, like you predict, he's either going to get hurt, or get shut down by opposing defenses making him beat them through the air. Last year, defenses keyed on Dixon...this year, he is the #1 key to every defensive gameplan he will face. You may be ignoring that fact, but it's a huge fact.

He needs somebody (who, I don't care) to compliment him and take some of the pressure off of him. If Relf doesn't get that from somebody, it's going to be a long year. And going by how Mullen ran spring practices between the two QBs, and even how they are listed as 1A and 1B...I'd say it's pretty obvious that he understands that too, whether you do or not.

Did I put unrealistic expectations on Russell. Yep. My bad. But it's only because I think we are going to have to rely on the two QB system again this year and he is the only viable option at this point. I'll admit, I didn't think Relf would progress the way he has, so I thought we would have to start Russell this year no matter what. I'm glad I was wrong about that. However, there's a long way to go before I'll be convinced that Relf can do it by himself. We are simply too one dimensional with him to win SEC games.

Thanks for outing yourself, Tyler. It's pretty much an established fact that Relf looked like crap in practice. The argument for playing him was that he's a gamer, making better plays/passes in games than he did in practice. Post less. Like, never.

i know i've read plenty of practice reports where he "showed flashes", "showed off his big arm", etc. at practice but could never do it consistently - take that however you want.

Look, I like Relf, and I'm glad he stuck around when he was looking at transferring. I'm sorry if I have a view that some of you tards can't understand, but that's really your problem not mine.

Book it now - if Relf has to take more than 70% of the snaps this year, we're winning 5 games, max. I could give two $%#!$ if it's mini-Favre or %#!%!%* William Hung that splits snaps with him. But somebody has to be able to come in and mount a passing attack. Mullen sure as hell seems to think so too.</p>

It typically takes new spread teams a year to adjust. We have that year behind us.

There is no reason why we shouldn't be better on offense.

The reason Lee started a lot last year was because Relf was in Dan's doghouse for much of it. Remember when Relf was suspended for smoking pot?

I don't think Relf was an aberration in the Egg Bowl. He had good games against Arkansas and Kentucky as well, and earlier in the year, he played OK against Auburn.

Based on what I saw in the spring game, Relf is a better passer. I really think he is poised to become one of the better spread QB's in the country, and I think by the time he graduates, we're going to talk about him like we talk about Sleepy Robinson.
