i agree with you. Relf > Russell right now. Unfortunately, whereI disagree is on the why. The why is because Russell is not very good right now, not because Relf is suddenly awesome.
I said:
we "do not need" Russell to suck.
We "need" Russell to be able to step in and play a lot of meaningful snaps (NOT, let's just put him in there while he's sucking and hope for the best)
We "need" him (or somebody, anybody, else)to provide a legitimate passing threat
I did not say to put him in if he's not effective. I did say we had better hope he gets it together so that he CAN be effective. I did not even say that he WILL be effective....only that we'd better HOPE he can get there between now and September. I just think Relf needs somebody who can supplement him. If he takes 80%+ of the snaps, like you predict, he's either going to get hurt, or get shut down by opposing defenses making him beat them through the air. Last year, defenses keyed on Dixon...this year, he is the #1 key to every defensive gameplan he will face. You may be ignoring that fact, but it's a huge fact.
He needs somebody (who, I don't care) to compliment him and take some of the pressure off of him. If Relf doesn't get that from somebody, it's going to be a long year. And going by how Mullen ran spring practices between the two QBs, and even how they are listed as 1A and 1B...I'd say it's pretty obvious that he understands that too, whether you do or not.
Did I put unrealistic expectations on Russell. Yep. My bad. But it's only because I think we are going to have to rely on the two QB system again this year and he is the only viable option at this point. I'll admit, I didn't think Relf would progress the way he has, so I thought we would have to start Russell this year no matter what. I'm glad I was wrong about that. However, there's a long way to go before I'll be convinced that Relf can do it by himself. We are simply too one dimensional with him to win SEC games.
