If Mike Singletary gets named the permanent coach of the Niners, which I doubt, Croom is going to San Fran. He will supposedly have a role similar to what he had in Green Bay with a few more administrative duties mixed in.

Why would he leave a job that's paying him 1.7 million for a job that will probably pay a lot less than that?

in San Fran I don't see Singletary being the head coach out there next year. The 49er's are so bad Mike S could probobly suit up today and make an impact. Singletary and Willis. The changing of the guard?

Seriously though I don't see him holding that head coaching sport unless they improve dramatically.

Sly Croom will not change. He knows things that everybody else doesn't. At the end of the year, he will be so opposed to having people tell him what to do with his staff, he will quit. Having an NFL job lined up as a way out would be a nice fallback.

whether he gets the money regardless of taking another job? He might just want to retire and a collect a big fat check for a couple of years of doing nothing.

and he has said he will not comment on that job until after the season.

At least I think that's what I heard...

I could see them hiring Lane Kiffin.

...That's worked so well in recent years... Has one ever made the transition "successfully"?

All I could name were Switzer, The Nick Saban and OBC.

And given that Switzer won a Lombardi Trophy, I guess he can't be considered a bust. Though his tenure was short.

1.2mil was for his old contract (900k/year)which only had 2 years remaining.

The only new number i have heard thrown out for the new contract (1.7mil/year) has been 3.5mil
worst case is would be the full contract price of 5.1mil (3 years remaining on new contract after this season)

are in their first job. Most all coaches in the NFL get fired. And taking into account the crappy teams they usually get hired by, the numbers aren't that bad.

They may not be worth the big salaries they get though. But Carroll wasn't terribly unsuccessful in the NFL his first go round was he? He did OK I thought.

In last night's live chat with Veazey, someone asked that question. His response...
Based on some conversations and some of my own math, I think buying out this staff and paying for Year One of a new one would cost like $8-9-10 million.
That doesn't really answer the question about Croom's buyout, specifically, but it gives a broader picture of what we're facing.

money to sit at the house. now, of course he isn't doing much now either but knowing that he will simply receive a check and can retire..... it's like he won the damn lottery.

i wonder if he did just well enough last year to get the extension and raise and has planned all along to tank this season and be a complete *** in the press to the fans so that he can be bought out. BLACK HELICOPTERS.....

like that and we certainly know that he couldn't execute it if he did come up with it.</p>
