Based on Television film this year. Does not include Cancun FloHoops games or ACCNX games.

We are currently shooting 70.7% on layups. Not bad. 87 makes out of 123 attempts

I will try to grade this stat in all televised games.

Thanks tarboy. Appreciate the work. What’s that 7 televised games this year?

-UCLA
-Texas
-Fairfield
-Boston
-Louisville
-UNCW
-CSU

36 misses over those 7 games ~5 missed lay-ups a games.

I’d love to know the amount of possessions with multiple (and how many exactly) missed lay-ups. I know of several this year that it seems like we’ve had 2 or 3 offensive rebounds and we missed 2, 3, or even 4 layups on one possession.

Say we’ve missed those 36 layups:

On paper that looks like 72 missed points. Overall this season, we have had an offensive rebounding percentage of ~40% on all of our misses. Say if a 1/3 of those are misses are on o-rebs and outback’s. That cuts that number down to 48 points, etc.

Also some interesting data I have pulled:

  1. 2-point FG%: 54% (26th nationally, only Nebraska 61% and Iowa State 60%) are above 60%. Iowa State is obviously courtesy of Audi Crooks.
  2. 3-point FG%: 37% (35th nationally, #1 ACC)
  3. Overall FG%: 47.2% (23rd nationally)
  4. Scoring margin: +22 (29th nationally)
  5. Offense: 80 ppg (29th nationally)
  6. FTs: 62% (337th nationally) Even more interesting, just 46% of teams are avg >70% from the FT line. 26% >73%, 16%> 75%. It’s an epidemic.
  7. 17 assists per game- 33rd nationally
  8. TOs per game: 13 (27th nationally); Texas is #1 at 9.9 per game. That’s pretty elite company.
  9. A:TO ratio (25th nationally)
The offense is much better than expected, Top 25 across numerous categories. As we approach 50% of games played, we now have viable data to make some comparisons.

We have a few where we missed the first but made the second.

I will try to track those figures from here on out.

With some free time I will review the film and factor in multiple misses.

I have re-watched the film for UNC vs UNCG, Texas and Boston University and only one time did we get
an offensive rebound on a layup and put it back up and score.

In the first quarter of the Texas game Reniya Kelly missed a difficult left handed layup and Ciera Toomey
got the weakside rebound and scored.

On other rebounded layup misses we have passed the ball back out for an open 3 or to restart the offense.

Sometimes we score on that same possession after the missed layup and sometimes we don't.

I will catch up on the other games I have tape on maybe during the cold up coming days plus I will continue to grade the film of the up coming games to track our lay up percentage.

Fingers crossed that the Monday Night game vs BC will be a fun film to re-watch.

This will tie into lay-ups as well. Here are the updated overall FG% per player in the ACC. Players have to have an average of 5 FGs made per game to qualify. There are just 4 players in the entire conference >51% overall from the floor with 5 makes:

-Izoje at Cuse: 63%
-Oliver at WF: 63%

With all respect, these two teams have played essentially schools of the blind the entire year. 22 combined wins between the both of them, 20 of which are Q4 wins.

-Prosper at ND: 57%
-6’6 Kyle at Miami: 56%

Only 5 other players are above 45% overall from the floor.

We do not have any players that qualify to be listed in the category, but we’ve got several very close:

-Toomey 62% on 4.64 makes per game (mpg)- including an impressive 74% from 2
-Nivar 50% on 4.85 mpg
-Elina 50% on 4.5 mpg
-Harris 57% on 3.3 mpg

worth noting how impressive Taliyah has been. 66% overall and has scored in 13/14 games played.

Also, as has been mentioned before, Ciera Toomey. If she can keep these numbers up, she’s the unanimous most improved player in the ACC.

24-25: 3.2 ppg on 39%, 2 rebounds per game, 25% FTs, .4 blks per game, .4 assists

25-26: 11.4 ppg on 62%, 7 rebounds per game, 71% FTs, 1.5 blks a game, 1.5 assists

Toomey has become our #1 go to option in the half court. She is really coming on.

I think Taliyah is fast becoming our best 4F.
She is a great athlete and can shoot. She needs to play more.

Nyla Brooks needs to play more. Ever how good Nyla and Taliyah are at the end of the year is good measure
towards how good this team will be late in the season IMO. We need them to be a core part of this team.

If it helps, the “play-by-play” tab in most box scores is highly descriptive on shot type including misses and you can see right below who got the rebound qnd the next shot:

I have a link to all box scores in the second post on the pinned team schedule thread

Jriv on FT percentage I am hoping we can shoot 70% or higher in conference play.

If I heard correctly we are 17th in the ACC right now..

I know we are better than 17th talent wise.

You would think we would be better than last year with our FT shooting tarboy. I just do not understand how we cannot be a good FT shooting team. I have a question for you. Who are our best FT's shooters right now based on the percentages. These people should be in the game when closing close games out. Someone on CB. staff should be tracking this information. I know I did when I coached. This is vital especially since conference play has started.

I know who I think are our best FT shooters late game. Lanie Grant, Reniya Kelly, Elina Aarnsalo in that order.

Stat's wise we probably need 3397 Carolina 151 to weigh in.

If I werre the coach just based on the eye test and gut feeling those 3.

IN (23-43), NB (8-20), and TH (11-22) drag down the team FT % quite a bit. Interestingly they are among our best 3-point shooters at 37.8%, 43.9%, and 60% respectively.

Other FT shooters- EA (82.4%), LG (81.3%), NH (71.1%), CT (70%), RK (69.2%), LH (66.7%).

Thanks for the information Uman1.

I think NB and TH will both become good FT% shooter as they play more.

I think RK will return to her top form of around 90% soon. Her shot is coming back since her injury.

The rest are about where they will be with the exception of LH who has a beautiful shooting motion and will probably get better and better as she gets more comfortable playing an important role on the team.

We are not the 17th worse FT shooting team talent wise, we just have to pick it up from here on out.

I think 70% is a decent low goal for conference play and 75% should be a very reasonable goal.

UNC WBB vs California WBB layups made 23 out of 49 attempts 57.5%

Not very good. We did have 4 double misses.

48 out of 69 attempts = 69.6% for ACC play/2 games BC&Cal.

These stats are needed. When the game is on the line and we need to close it out on the FT line, Grant, EA, NH, CT, and RK will need to be in the game. LH will be the next in line if one of those 5 should happen to foul out. This is what the stats are telling me if I am the HC. Go Heels!

I agree Jriv that is what the stats say.

I also know IN is going to be in the game because that is the way Coach CB operates.

Maybe Coach will try to hide her. I am not sure that was not the plan on the inbounds plays late vs LU.

First play IN passes in to LG and if she catches the ball game over most likely.

Second play with 7 seconds left IN passes in to RK under LU basket and RK passes it back to an open IN.

Not sure the plan was ever the plan to pass it back to IN. On the last OB play NH broke open first at half court and should have gotten the ball. I think JMO EA should have been where NH was in the breakout line.

I am sure IN thought RK was the player to have the ball in her hands because she is the best dribbler on the team and experienced and second maybe first at FT's.

Two LU players doubled RK quickly so she passed the ball back to IN who got fouled.

Our 3 best FT shooters late game most likely based on my eye's LG or RK then EA.

NH then CT, or LH would be next in line.

I think you could take her out with a minute or less left to go in the game or You can use her as a decoy and have her to sprint to the other end of the floor so that her teammates can get fouled first. I am talking about IN if she was left in the game as a closer.

As a coach you would want IN in the game just not on the foul line. She brings so many intangibles like loose balls etc. i think that is why her job is to throw the ball inbounds. JMO.

That is another way to keep IN in the game. Have her to take the ball out when the game is on the line unless she can prove that she can make her FT's. Good suggestion tarboy.

At Notre Dame: 13 made layups out of 23 attempts. 56.5%
FT's 8 out of 11 72.7%

Unforced Turnovers my count: 8

8 unforced TO's plus 7 steals by HH = 15 times they had scoring opportunities and we did not.

Other thoughts: We need to rebound a lot better and try to use 2 hands to grab the ball. We need to focus on boxing out. ND seemed on the rewatch so much more athletic than us and outside of HH I do not think they really are. Last thought We are a lot better than we showed at ND. JMHO.

Hidalgo not only had 7 steals, I think on at least 5 of them she used her speed to create an uncontested or lightly contested layup. 7 times we should have at least attempted a shot that instead were 10 easy points for them. Throw in the unforced turnovers (though I would argue that Hidalgo has us sped up and playing scared, making them indirectly forced) and this accounts for arguably the margin of victory.

There are tons of other things we did really, really poorly (rebounding, creating good shots in the flow of offense, finishing around the rim) , so this is not the only factor, but the turnovers and points off turnovers alone created conditions where we had very little opportunity to win this game.

I would argue that Prosper is more athletic than anyone on our team as a combination of speed, leaping and length except maybe Henderson. she reminds me of Fournier. It showed in this game. She had been largely an afterthought her first three years at ND but has emerged this year as an All-conference level player and currently has my vote for most improved player in the league. 6 pts and 4 rebounds last year per game, career 28% 3pt shooter. This year she is 17 pts and 8 rebounds per game shooting 36% from 3. With that said, we let her run hog wild through us all game, that is on us.

DeJesus shot well above her skill level for this one game, but I think Prosper and Hidalgo were bringing their normal A game. And as good as DeJesus played, their best weapon Moore actually had an off night so their 3 pt shooting at 37% was pretty darn good, but not exceptional. and way too many of their 3 pt shoots came from wide open passes out of the post for ideal shooting conditions when our defense collapsed. Them making shots was not why they won. It was everything else that matters. Again, that is a fail by us.

As 3397 says, Basically we need to do better at lots of things. Just my opinion about thiis years team all those turnovers aside for this one game but we have to make shots.

We are fairly poor at layups, FT's and in big games we cannot make 3's. Our defense is average at best and
we are weak at defensive rebounding.

All that does not leave a lot to hang your hat on as far as winning basketball games go. IMO our greatest
potential upside is shooting the ball. We have offensive talent but having potential an doing something with it are two different thing. Our team needs to hit the gym and work on hitting shots from their spots and layups and FT's.

Coach CB needs to work them hard on defense and rebounding.

We need to get our best 3 point shooters open shots, use Toomey, Harris and others in the high low post game when it is available.

IMO we are in desperation mode from here out. The season is half over.

Tarboy, I agree with you totally. I would like to add this fact in. The two home games that we lost during the last 3 minutes of the game was due to a lack of defensive rebounding in the closing minutes. This was caused by CB taking NH out during the closing minutes of both games. When Toomey and Harris are in. They do a good job of getting the defensive rebounds. For some unknown reason, CB takes Harris out and that is when the other teams kill them by getting those offensive rebounds. NH free threw percentage is at 70% which is pretty good. I do not understand why CB takes her out.
