It feels like we are down to a 7-8 man rotation. Lee & Dakari are for spot minutes only at this point. I was really hoping for more from those two, especially with all the playing time they got early in the season. I still feel like either could come in and provide big minutes though.
And that's fine. UK is better doing it that way.
All the people who said we were so much better platooning have disappeared.
DJ and Lee will have their moments, and despite what I said above I think we could see the last gasp of platooning in any real form or fashion this week at the SEC Tourney due to 3 games in 3 days.
We WERE better when we were platooning.
That is very debatable, the offense certainly lacked flow at times platooning. The D was probably a little better, but that is more due to Poythress than platooning. Even with the 10 man rotation it was not platooning that won the Texas game, but rather going away from that to more conventional sub patterns. So it did not always result in some dominating win.
Once Poy got hurt, that system was dead despite it being utilized some at times in SEC play early on. UK is probably not quite as good overall as they were with Poy and the 10 man rotation, but honestly...Lee and DJ do not do enough to warrant the minutes to run a 9 man platoon at present. I'm sure Cal would love to play everyone about 22 minutes each, but this is not Communism. If Poy was still healthy I still think the rotation would be cut down at this point in the season to an extent...no way for either side to prove that point, but just IMO.
UK still does not play its guys as big of minutes as most other teams...which is great. That is why we continue to see UK being able to play lockdown D the last 10 minutes and tire the other team out and pull away or come back when down the last 1/4 of the game as at UGA and LSU.
