Les Koenning

So I missed the news at the beginning of the year, but I just realized that Les is now a WR coach at Texas.

Does it surprise anyone that as soon as we have someone other named Les Koenning as offensive coordinator, co-coordinator or otherwise, our offense seemingly has a drastic improvement?

Considering that Mullen has said many times over that he called plays last year, there isn't a connection. The fact that we have a quarterback suited to his offense, who gets all of the important reps in practice, and that we install gameplans for is the reason we are better.

I never bought into "I call the plays" thing until this year, or the Liberty Bowl last year at least.

No one without personal knowledge will know how much Les had to do with things. The whole off-season was spent preparing for a passing attack last year, so I don't know how much I blame anyone for last year. It was a huge mess.

Les has spent his entire career being a backseat driver. I think that was implied when he was hired, that Mullen would be quasi coordinator. I just always thought Mullen had a "if this is the coverage we're facing, you have these 3 options to call" thing going on.

I do read into the whole Dak's development thing coming about as soon as he leaves though.

I feel Les was the scapegoat for the offensive woes of the past two years. However, I think he was just treading water with his position and the recent change was a needed upgrade for the QB's on-field performance.

Had Koenning not been the OC the past 2 years, Russell would have looked better. The play calling has been 100% less asinine this year.

While the General's predictions on the B&B are about as solid as a Metamucil ****, he's more right than wrong on this one.

Tyler Russell did not fit in what we are trying to do offensively. Also forcing seniors that have "earned" playing time (see Perkins) in the scheme didn't help.

We now have a pounding RB with the true option of the running QB in a zone read. Our blocking is designed for it, our personnel fits it, and we are seeing the success on the field.

I think the fact that

we finally have a qb that fits what Mullen does has more to do with our current situation.

Wonder what kind of impact Brian Johnson has had on Dak and the offense?

In addition to that, you've gotta wonder, though... how much does it also help to simply be sticking with one QB whether that QB is the perfect fit or not? No more splitting snaps in practice, no more running entirely different schemes, no more wondering when is the perfect time to insert QB A or B during a game... the list could go on.

It's great having multiple capable QBs, but sometimes I think there's a lot to be said for knowing who you are and only having to worry about executing
