Coach34 says the following:</p>
Auburn?
</p>

They will be pretty good as always. I think we will beat them
also, but to expect a win over a team we have beaten once in the last
8-9-10 years is kinda ridiculous. </p>

My comment - <span style="font-style: italic;"></span></p>
Aren't you expecting to beat them in your statement when you say "I think we will beat them..."? So are you being ridiculous?
Discuss.

So that no matter what happens, he can be "right". That way his perceived cred can remain intact and his life is not unraveled. #sad

I think we can beat Auburn. But after only beating them 1 time in the last decade or so- to have that as an expectation is kind of ridiculous.

Bottom line- I believe that "thinking something can happen" and "expecting it to happen" are different

I think the way people are counting the Auburn game as a sure win is what he is alluding to, but I have said all along that we should not count a team that we are 1-11 in the past 12 years as a sure win either.

are 2 different things. "I think we can beat Auburn" is not equal to "I think we will beat Auburn"

And I actually agree with that. I think we will beat them, but would I bet on it or tell people they should expect it? Hell no, because we are MState. But his defense argument in this thread where he explains the meanings of words, reminds me of a shsdawg "talent" post....so that got a chuckle

I "think" we will beat Auburn. There is no way you think those two sentences mean the same thing.

I know it's Summer and the hits are down- but c'mon

I happen to think that any game prior to the departure of the reason (players and coaches)they were good, or we were, is irrelevant.

It's the same logic that says our series with OM is an indication of how this next game will go.

Relevant factors:

Coaches
Home field advantage
Skill position matchups (offense) against their counterparts on defense
Line matchups
The way the ball bounces in certain situations and how each team deals with it.

Id say we should win. But that is only a should. We will have to play like we expect to win. Our defense cant just win the whole team must if for no other reason that they dont make critical mistakes.

They have had a better talent pool sign with them since they won the NC and so they have a factor that will negate the home field advantage.

But to act as if a game played 3 years ago or more has a bearing on this game is so..........us.

Thinking a team is going to win an upset special. One team is better but coming off a short week on the road after playing a great team and next week they play another great team, while the other team is coming off a bye week. I don't think that is the situation with us and Auburn. I think we will have a more cohesive squad that is better coached, and not feeling the effects of losing both coordinators and we're at home.

Jack nailed it. Here are the two possibilities:

MSU beats Auburn: Coach34 - "I told you in June I <span style="font-weight: bold;">thought</span> we would win."

Auburn beats MSU: Coach34 - "I told you in June I didn't <span style="font-weight: bold;">expect</span> to win."

Nothing new to see here folks....keep moving along.

However, I know what Coach34 was trying to say.

He thinks that we will beat Auburn. But there are varying degrees of "think." For example, you can <span style="font-style: italic;">definitely </span>think. You can <span style="font-style: italic;">be pretty confident.</span> You can be more or less confident. You can even add numbers to give it that extra sharpness. I am 60-40 we beat Auburn. See? That means that you are pretty sure, but not positive.

However, he all the while maintains that anyone"expecting" (in this sense meaning certain) that we will beat Auburn should slow down a little and just be cautiously optimistic.<span style="font-style: italic;"> </span>

I said I think State will beat Auburn but in no way will I be surprised if we lost

I expect to beat Jackson State- I will be on the floor shocked if they beat us

<div>But back to the original point, how about this sentence when referencing asizableunderdog, "Yeah I think we will pull the upset, but I wouldn't bet on it"</div><div>

You know, sometimes he says things on purpose that aren't true just to " mess " with people.
