Stormed in '96 as a freshman, and grabbed an endzone pylon. Many of you will have heard this at some point, but I was a sports reporter for the Reflector at the time, and was charged with interviewing LT. At the time, they were moaning a bit about the quick turnaround to the next week's Arkansas game, how much goal posts cost, etc, so I asked if they needed the pylon back. LT told me to keep it. He was extremely personable in the interview. Bought him several years of good graces from me. The interview was combined with another article, and I had my first (and only) headlining story. Won honorable mention in the regional college newspaper awards that year, too.
To make things a bit weirder, the night before the game I'd had this strange dream that I was writing with a Sharpie on something bright orange. Didn't think much of it until I was back at my dorm, pylon in hand, writing the score on it.
Stormed again in '98 as a junior. Was at the end where Hazelwood kicked it through, and the top of the goalpost literally came down about a foot from me. I grabbed the flag a split second before some muscle-bound dude did. He yelled some Conan-esque cry at me. I returned the call, yanked with all my might, and ran away with my prize. Once again, the score was permanently emblazoned with a Sharpie.
Did it one final time in '99. Had my little brother with me, who was 15 at the time. We jumped the short fence in the middle of the seating area, and he bumped against some drunk UMites. One of them took a swing at him and hit a glancing blow to the jaw. I didn't know this until later, or we would've had a fight. As it was, we both kept going, and made it easily onto the field. The game wasn't over, but people were already stripping it of equipment. I hovered over the 10-yard-line marker, and as soon as Deuce went out of bounds, snatched it up and sprinted for the stands. The cops were being dickish that night, and there was no way I was coming away empty-handed. IIRC, my brother grabbed an endzone pylon of his own for good measure. Sharpie made a third appearance, and now all 3 of my trophies sit proudly atop a bookcase in my office.
Good times.
