1996 - I charged the field after we edged Alabama 17-16 and helped tear those things apart. That win helped to end the Gene Stallings era at Alabama. It was my only time to jump the hedges after a game. Still have a piece of the field from that night in a cigar box

98 for Arkansas.

99 for Egg Bowl.

2000 for Florida. For Florida, we jumped the fence and stood on the sidelines for the last 2 minutes of the game. In my jumping of the fence, I was about to jump off the top and go over and my friend thought I needed an extra push. Straight into the hedges. Took out a good chunk. Then after the game, I walked right up to Jabar Gafney and gave the "slitting of the throat" like he did to TN the week before. I am still shocked I didn't get popped in the face.

I remember in 98 for Arkansas, some yahoos ran out on the field early and they had to clear the field to finish the game. I think they actually started climbing on the goalposts with about 15 seconds left on the game clock. Security had to run them off and finish the game, then it was ON.

99 Egg Bowl I was wearing glasses like a dumbass and was hanging from the goalpost. In the ensuing crush of humanity, me and my glasses got separated. My vision wasn't HORRIBLE without them, good enough so that I made it to the other end of the football field before realizing I had lost them. (nearsighted). Went back to the goalpost area and found them all bent up, stepped on, and smothered with chalkdust, but in one piece. I still have those glasses today, kind of a memento. Of course they are ugly as hell now and my prescription has changed anyways.

Hell, even in 2007 our biggest wins at home were over a 6-6 Bama team and 3-9 UM team.

Still have the scar on my leg from not quite clearing the hedges, and a chip off that goalpost lies somewhere amongst my treasured belongings rotting in the attic.

and I can still pick myself out of the crowd in the north end zone. My roommate at the time got form tackled by a grounds guy for trying to get a chunk of turf. Made it onto the field in 98 for the Arkansas game. Remember getting hung up in the fence in 99 after the egg bowl. Still have a piece of that one. Didn't make it onto the field for 2000 Florida, but got a huge chunk of the actual post later (lived across the street from the Gilmers(?) who would break out the circular saw-yes, there were a lot of sparks- and hand out pieces to the line of students.)

Stormed in '96 as a freshman, and grabbed an endzone pylon. Many of you will have heard this at some point, but I was a sports reporter for the Reflector at the time, and was charged with interviewing LT. At the time, they were moaning a bit about the quick turnaround to the next week's Arkansas game, how much goal posts cost, etc, so I asked if they needed the pylon back. LT told me to keep it. He was extremely personable in the interview. Bought him several years of good graces from me. The interview was combined with another article, and I had my first (and only) headlining story. Won honorable mention in the regional college newspaper awards that year, too.
To make things a bit weirder, the night before the game I'd had this strange dream that I was writing with a Sharpie on something bright orange. Didn't think much of it until I was back at my dorm, pylon in hand, writing the score on it.

Stormed again in '98 as a junior. Was at the end where Hazelwood kicked it through, and the top of the goalpost literally came down about a foot from me. I grabbed the flag a split second before some muscle-bound dude did. He yelled some Conan-esque cry at me. I returned the call, yanked with all my might, and ran away with my prize. Once again, the score was permanently emblazoned with a Sharpie.

Did it one final time in '99. Had my little brother with me, who was 15 at the time. We jumped the short fence in the middle of the seating area, and he bumped against some drunk UMites. One of them took a swing at him and hit a glancing blow to the jaw. I didn't know this until later, or we would've had a fight. As it was, we both kept going, and made it easily onto the field. The game wasn't over, but people were already stripping it of equipment. I hovered over the 10-yard-line marker, and as soon as Deuce went out of bounds, snatched it up and sprinted for the stands. The cops were being dickish that night, and there was no way I was coming away empty-handed. IIRC, my brother grabbed an endzone pylon of his own for good measure. Sharpie made a third appearance, and now all 3 of my trophies sit proudly atop a bookcase in my office.

Good times.

My once and only time. I remember getting very close to the north goal post. Then it was so packed with bodies. That when it came down I could not move out of the way. Lucky, the up right fell to the left of me. I will never forget running around and seeing Eric Dotson still sitting on the bench resting, taking it all in. That was one big SOB.

Also, don't remember the year.......mid 80s.....we beat someone. Some fans rush the goal posts (I was just a little kid so the old man would not let me leave the stands) and it took forever for them to get the post down. I remember one goal post. The up rights folded to the ground and the main post never moved. The up rights were worked away from the main post and hauled out of the stadium. Maybe it was LSU '84.

Landed right in the damn bushes as I jumped from the student section. It wasn't until nearly an hour later that I realized my legs were bleeding profusely (I was wearing shorts that day).

I also remember the sound of David Stewart and another OL running past me towards the goalpost. It sounded like a horses in full gallop.

Seeing Lincoln Smith tear down the goalposts was hilarious.

When we beat Shaq & the LSU Tigers for a share of the SEC title. I ran out on the floor and watched the team do the funky whatever dance that LSU had usually done. Then backed away and found myself standing under the rim when somebody planted down a ladder and said "hold this". So I did. I stood and held the ladder while the team cut down the net.

...I was in 7th grade and Johnathan Nichols, who went on to be a great kicker for Ole Miss, was who helped me over the fence. His father ran one of my dad's offices in Greenville and they were at our place in Noxubee county hunting with us, so we all went to the game together.I guess he was probably a junior in high school then. </p>

'96 Bama– sat on the first row in the student section - got on ESPN with my idiot friends that painted their chest. Hopped the wall and the hedges and got right up under the posts and then hung on for a few seconds. Ended up with the bolt that holds on the cross bar. It’s sitting on my desk. My roommate snagged a endzone pylon and one of my friends ended up with Kenzaki Jones’ helmet.

'98 Arkansas – Wasn’t this the game that Westerfield was hopping up and down on the left side of the south end zone goal post when it came down? I remember at the time thinking he better not get hurt dancing on a goal post.

'99 Egg Bowl: Senior year – last game as a student. I just watched the shenanigans unfold from the stands. Walked out on the field after about 5-10 minutes and soaked it all in.

2000 Florida: Just soaked it all in from my seat. Awesome, dominating performance on the field. Took a nice stroll across the field after about 10-15 minutes. Florida fans were still sitting there with their jaws dropped trying to figure out how we managed to whip their ***.

in 2000 we watched the end of the Florida game from the sideline towards the back of the endzone. When the buzzer sounded and everyone rushed the field me and a few others tackled Pig Prather, he was on the ground laughing saying, "man, y'all smell like whiskey!"

Wish we could take a page from Oregon here. A cool thing they do is sound a horn 15 minutes after the game ends. At that time, everybody is free to come out on the field. Whatever players want to hang around and sign autographs do that.

The Eggbowl in 99 was the best... ran out there and somehow got near Sherrill and Madkin right before/after the TV interviews... I threw an arm around Jackie and shouted something stupid like 'Way to go, Coach!' and then grabbed the top of Madkin's head and shook it back and forth just screaming 'wooooooo!' for a sec. Madkin gave me a big grin, then I made my way back towards the north endzone and went to work on the goal post with the rest of the mob.... good times.

I was only 7 at the time of the 98' arkansas game, but I was there and on the field. Coach Sherrill had heard about my story (Childhood cancer) from another Sixpacker's family who was very close to coach sherrill and he gave me and my dad sideline passes and we got to eat pregame meal with the team. Its an experience I still hold very close to my heart and have a signed picture of the players carrying Jackie off the field hanging up in my room. I've also got JJ Johnson's gloves.

for the 99' Egg Bowl me and my family were on about the 40 yard line about 12 or so rows up on the east side. Me and my dad waited untill the rush had ensued and then went onto the field. I've got Smoot's gloves from that game.

Agoalpost and a flagpole walk into a bar. The flagpole orders a scotch neat and the goalpostorders mineral water.
The flagpole asks, "Whatsamader? Cant hold your liquor?"
The goalpost just shakes his head.
"I won't be standing by the end of the game anyhow."

(I just kill myself)

Never went out onto the field to help take down a goalpost. Watched several times with my sweetie from the stands and enjoyed ourselves every time we saw it.

....caught an elbow to the mouth in the melee while bringing down the posts in 1998. Then ran down in front of section F and heckled Arkansas fans who started throwing crap at us. If a busted lip got me a win over Arkansas every year, that would be a small price to pay. Yeah, those game day activites were brought to you by the fine folks at Makers Mark.

In 1999, I had started to leave and was on my way out of the stadium when we made the comeback. I was disgusted up to that point. Was standing west side, behind the bench, and promptly jumped over the fence and into the hedges after the improbable comeback. Was cut all to hell. I had about three seconds of my immature behavior captured for the world to see by ESPN.

In 2000, I didn't go out on the field. I enjoyed it all from the confines of my seat, thinking about just how good we might've ended up being that year. That was a great day.

1996 was the most memorable one, though. Talk about a crazy day, from the parachutist wiping out before the game, to the very late kickoff (delayed until well after 9 PM thanks the aforementioned incident), to the victory celebration, complete with goalpost distruction.

From the Dawgs’ Bite, November 24, 1984:</p>

"No one seems to know when last it happened. But the North end zone of Scott Field is now minus one goalpost thanks to the celebration that followed the Bulldog’s 16-14 win over LSU."</p>

Artie Cosby kicked game winning field goal with 1:15 left to play, and the fans rushed the field after LSU’s 59 yard attempt failed as time expired.</p>

I was the third one on the post, my buddy was first, and he was straddling the goalpost while security was on pulling on both his legs, like they expected him to split in two. Had to bend the postback and forth to get them to break off. Once the goalpost came down we paraded them around the field, eventually ending up in front of the South end zone in front of the LSU band, where they struck up the song "Delirious".</p></font>

96 - Had a blind date and drank a large amount of Beam during the game. When I finally realized we were going to win and I heard people saying they were going on the field my date ( who didn't drink, or at least not with me that night) looks at me and says "You're not going down there". I nicely explained to her how important this was to me and how I had only know her four hours. Said see you later and hit the field. Got a piece of the post to this day at home. My date didn't talk to me again till three years later for leaving her.

98 - Jumped on to the field in front of the student section. Watch the guy in front of me get his ear hung on the fence or something and almost rip it off. My roommate and I were running around trying to find something to take. We got some sod and said this sucks lets get something better. About that time I saw the Ark equipment bags and it was the ones with the game balls in it. Or at least thats what we thought. The plan was for me to grab one and get as far as I could and then pitch it to my roommate. I would take what was coming and he would get away clean. I grabbed the ball and was instantly grabbed/tackled by a trainer, as I was falling I pitched the ball, and got tackled by a male cheerleader and two female cheerleaders. The ball hit my roommate in the back because he had already started to run. I got beat for about a minute before I could get up and run away. One black eye, and the left arm of my game day shirt ripped halfway off, but no ball. I did manage to get a piece of that post too. 3000lb chicken lived behind me at the time and saw me come home from that one.

99- Watched from the stands. I did watch a Ole miss buddy of mine get arrested on University Drive because about 10 of us State fans were going crazy and the cops told us to stop. We didn't and he pick the one ole miss guy by chance and took him to jail. Priceless.

2000 - The only home game I've missed since 97 until last year Ga Tech. Dammit.

The first two stories were brought to you by Jim Beam and Ziploc bags. Fun times.

We were in the stands and we knew we were going to win. The vibe started that the field was going to be rushed, so we made our way down with about 5:00 left in the game. My buddy and I were determined to get a piece of the goal post. As the clock was under a minute, we noticed something. Six Florida helmets lie in front of us at the back of the sideline on the 30 yard line. There was no one that would care closer than the opposing 40 (game action was over on that end of the field). I said to my buddy, what would be better - a piece of the goal post or a Florida helmet? We starting devising a similar plan. I would stay on the stands side of the fence, he would jump, grab the helmets as fast as he could and sling them to me. We'd have to get out of there because we knew we wouldnt make it on the field with those helmets.

Clock hit 0:00 and it happened. He jumped over, grabbed the helmets and slung them over the fence. All six of them. I managed to get one. The other five ended up in hands of non-involved, all which were stupid enough to rush the field with them. They were confronted and easily gave the helmets back - My buddy ran toward the goal post and I sat there with a Florida helmet in my hand watching the whole thing. People were coming by saying "Awesome souvenir, etc."

Then I heard it. A blue haired MSU fan started yelling at a Florida equipment guy - he's got your helmet, he's got your helmet. He started approaching and I just threw it back on the field. Pissed me off.

My buddy gets back with a piece of the goal post- he couldn't get two and thought I had the helmet.

I'm a long time lurker, butI just had to post this story. My wife and I were sitting on the west side 40 yd line in some seats given to us bylong time family friends when a drunk bama fan about 10 rows behind me said in a very loud voicewhere he wanted to put my cowbell. I wasn't taunting anyone or being overly enthustiac, just "ringing responsibly".I ignored him, but hekept on till security came around and tossed us both. As you can imagine, security was cheered when the bama fan was escorted out, and boo'ed as I was made to leave. After stowing my bell safely back at our tailgate location, I was cheered by the section asI made my way back to my seat. Unfortunately, the security guard came to visit me once more, and informed me that he threw me out, not my bell. Out I went a second time with a warning that ifI came back, I'd be taking a trip downtown.I then went over to the east side, and watched the remainder of the game with some friends in the student section. After the game I was on the fieldparading around with an upright when I locked eyes with (you guessed it) the samesecurity guy. Fortunately, there were too many people betweenus for him to get to me. I just smiled and waved at him.
Some friends andI later escaped withthe upright and took it to a local unnamed furniture manufacturer where we took a band-saw to the thing. We were lucky we didn't get pulled over on the way. The thing stuck way out past thetruck's tailgate and was kept from falling out by aload of yelling and cowbell ringing fans. The next week I had a local trophy company make several plaques with the date and score engraved on them. I drilled holes in the sections, mountedthem to the plaques, and gave them out for Christmas gifts to all my State fan relatives (some of which live in Alabama). By their reactions, you'd thinkI had just gave them a gold brick. The top section of that uprightis still on my desk along withmy laminated ticket and cowbell.
