Let's just get the expectations out there for hoops........

due to losing players either due to graduation, the draft, or transfer. Having to start out with new guys has cost us in pre-SEC losses that later hurt our NCAA seeding. Last year and 2008 were prime examples. How would we have done last season or in 08 with nothing else but a better seed? In 08, playing nearly anyone other than Memphis in the 2nd round puts us in the Sweet Sixteen. This year we will (or better) have a much better record going into SEC play, and even a mediocre SEC record of 10-6 will get us a better seed in the tourney. Before even clicking on this thread I was thinking Top 2 or 3 in the SEC and Sweet Sixteen. This year is our best chance in a while.

If it doesn't happen this year, it ain't happening. I know we have only two seniors, and should have plenty of talent left when Jarvis and Barry leave. But for the first time, we have everyone back from a good basketball team. That adds up to a great basketball team. If Rick blows this one, my faith that he has it in him is gone. I expect a sweet sixteen AT A MINIMUM. That logic probably seems flawed, and it may be. Also, I'm not suggesting we can Stans if he doesn't make the S16. That's just silly.

I think I think we pretty much have to make the Sweet Sixteen and we will. We should be in a good position to sweep the non-con schedule or at worst come out with a loss. We then only need 11 or 12 SEC victories to lock up a 4ish seed. I think people are discounting what experience can mean. Yeah we were only a mediocre team for most of last year, but the same guys coming back, having been in tournament situations, and getting a year better will show a huge improvement. I just fear that we don't have a capable backup for Varnado. Riek can't play for nine games and who knows about Bailey. I guess Lewis is going to have to step up.

I wish there was an option to view how people voted. Some of us might need to be reminded of our vote in March.

there's a difference between high expectations and unreasonably high expectations. You tend to have the latter.

Overlooked the obvious: Average season, nice run in SEC Tournament, 1 seed in NIT, win at least one game

i can't commit to the "it doesn't matter what we do in the regular season"... BUTthere's a couple of things that people remember...

remember uGa sucked balls all year and then won the SEC tourny to get the auto bid.

remember UNLV went undefeated in the regular season only to lose the championship.

so...

if we had a better schedule.. i'd have taken (expected)this year's record, SEC tournament win, and possibly a run to the Sweet 16... and then depending on the matchup we'd see. does any team really have 10 interchangeable players they can roll the ball on the court for? 6-8 in the rotation is where we could have gained this year. i suppose that since i never saw sidney play, i'm not jaded into thinking he is/was the end-all to us being a top ranked team.

Although if we don't, I won't be crying for Coach Stans head. He has given us consistent winners and I have been an MSU fan for long enough to know that is pretty rare around here. I do reserve the right to complain about the following:

1. Having Randy be the go to guy with 8 sec left on the shot clock.

dang.... to end the season.

He did play a really nice game otherwise, but isn't there a way with Dee in the game to run the offense to generate some sort of open look for someone?

That was brutal. Did appreciate the announcers enjoying the game. They were good. Gave credit where it was due on both sides. Good game, except for the loss.
