It's August of 2015, WVU fans are excited and optimistic entering the season. People are saying we now have Holgorsen's team in place and have talent and depth like we haven't seen in years. Those who question that are attacked as naysayers who have no clue. The defense, it was said, will be excellent because it has experience backed with many good young players ready to contribute at a high level. Some even tout us as one of the best defenses in the country, maybe top 5, certainly top 25. Midway through the season, after losing one starter (albeit probably the best one), the defense is in complete disarray. Our best corner (who may now be out too) is not the "lock down corner" who people were saying was so good the only worry was for next year because he might go to the NFL; it's Chestnut (a Stewart recruit). Worley has been exposed. When in response to him being toasted we went to the subs (Douglas and Rumpf) it looked even worse. When the other corner got dinged we then tried Kyeremeh and he too struggled mightily. Suddenly, we get told depth is a huge issue at corner because we have so little 5 years in.. With Joseph out, Harper and Tyler have struggled and we find depth at safety is lacking as well. At linebacker Muldrow, Preston and Benton have looked at best shaky and (ironically, since they were all Stewart recruits) only the good fortune that the starters have been able to play the bulk of the minutes has kept that unit from being a major weakness as well. Now we're playing Bruce (another Stewart recruit) at DE because we don't have anyone recruited by Holgorsen who can put on an effective rush. The offensive line has looked shaky and losing the LT managed to further weaken 2 positions. The running backs are Smallwood who has excelled, Shell who hasn't and.....? WR where we were "loaded" has not only caused us to burn a QB's redshirt but shown he might be the best or second best on the squad. We won't mention QB out of respect for the weak stomached. That people STILL claim this is a more talented and deeper team than what Holgorsen inherited is hilarious. It's impossible to believe anyone who once drove by a football field actually believes that.
