Let's stop looking at the record and just look at the play on the field

Records in college football can be deceptive because of the competition you play and the time of the year you play them. Yes, we won 8 games. Yippee. We haven't done that very much in our history. However, is there anything in the level of our play that suggests we are building toward a better future? I'd say no, in fact, our level of play has dropped since even the 2009 team that won only 5 games but played the toughest schedule in the country. That team came within a few inches of beating a top 10 LSU team and should've beaten Houston. They also were within one possession of #1 Florida in the fourth quarter. The 2010 team finished with the same regular season record as this year, but played a much tougher schedule and was very competitive in almost every game. They lost to national champ Auburn by 3 and Sugar Bowl team Arkansas in 2OT. Even last year we were more competitive in our losses, losing to 11-win South Carolina by 2 points and Chick-fil-A Bowl champions Auburn on a goal line stand. But this year's team looked terrible against every decent team it played. Every game we lost was by at least 2 touchdowns. Even with the 8 wins, our level of play took a BIG step backwards this year, and if things don't change in a major way, a lot of you sunshine pumpers are going to be in for a rude awaking next season when we win 4 or 5 games against a tougher schedule.

Maybe not, but 8-5 with a top 15 recruiting class, new stadium, new football facility, sell out streak, etc IS something to be happy about, and will help build that future. You have to start with fan support and winning the ones you Should win.
We have reached a point where Mullen got us back to winning, and now we want to take that next step. It's natural, and I want to see it too, but we also can't ignore the strides we've made. I've seen MSU teams that would have lost to either Aub, Ark, or Tenn, this year. We are finally to a point where we win every game we're supposed to win....now it's time to start winning more of the toss ups and at least playing the big boys close. That's where the frustration comes from, we lost toss ups to OM and Northwestern and got demolished by the good teams. And then several of our preseason "toss ups" turned out to be ******, thus making those wins mean nothing. The fan support is there, facilities are about to be there, the bowl games are there, now it's time for these coaches to get us some wins against good teams. We should have beaten OM and NU with the talent we have. Coaching lost those. Lack of preparation, adjustments, and heart.

Agree. The trend on the field is not good. Not saying I'm throwing in the towel on Mullen, but if the negative mo on the field continues into next year....the fan base won't be happy and who knows what might happen.

I'm always amazed that some fans would rather have the 5 win 2009 season than the one we just completed. Who cares if we almost beat LSU or Florida. Guess what, we still lost.

Why were TSUN and NW toss-up games? In fact they were tossup games and we slight underdogs. But on paper we had better teams. We couldn't execute, got exposed when we played top 10 teams, and people doubted us. That's all on the game-day coaching.

So, using your logic, if a school wins the FCS or Div II championship, then its the same as winning the FBS or Div I championship. All that matters is the number of wins.
