...I guess the obvious dig here is there is no way in hell Powe could have written a letter of that caliber, even if he wanted to.

I believe it was similar to that of Shoeless Joe Jackson's confession that he accepted money to throw the world series. Someone asked him to sign a letter stating he did not participate, but the letter actually stated just the opposite.

Someone probably told Jerrell it was paperwork he needed to fill out for his diploma.

why Pete Boone would not want Jerrell Powe to be admitted to an Institution of Higher Learning. I'm glad Jerrell got an education, I'm glad Jerrell got to play football finally, and I'm very glad that he now has a steady and significatn income. But if he wasn't NFL caliber football material he never would have graced the hallowed halls of Ole Miss without at least an Associates Degree from JUCO. No less without paying for it on his own dime.

Regardless this is great, if we're not taking advantage of all these ex-players diatribes on the recruiting trail then we're idiots!

"Forward" Rebel....Powe's ghost writer wants a candidate who can "lead Ole Miss out of the past and into the future." BUT, we want the rebel flag back, we want Colonel Rebel back, we want Dixie back, and screw the bear. I think what they want is someone to lead them out of the future and into the past because that's where most of them still live.

..it seems to be lost on Mr. Powe that the University of Mississippi would have laughed him out of Oxford if he wasn't perceived as an All-American football player coming out of high school.

But since OM thought they had the next Ndamukong Suh on their hands, the University of Mississippi set about indulging in all kind of nefarious activities in order to get Mr. Powe eligible.

Seems to me the only thing Powe "learned" @ OM was how to hire a good stenographer.

where the "money" athletes stood. During NFL introductions, they all say their high school instead of Ole Miss. Not sure
when they recorded those, but it has been going on all year. It smells of protest. Maybe they should start an Occupy Oxford
campaign. Haven't heard Eli introduce himself, curious where he stands.

He said he was a good kid, but he was dumber than bag of bricks (we all know this). When they were teaching Powe the plays, they couldn't write on the play schematics. My buddy said they literally had to get people to stand in place of the players and teach him by visual enactment. Of course this is all because he couldn't read. The cheer leaders used to write them notes and put them in their lockers on Fridays. My bud told me he had to read the letters to Powe....amazing. I can't imagine what UM did to get him in school.

I knew Jerrell when he was playing at Buckatunna Middle School and then at Wayne County. He would come to the field house on Sundays and watch film with the defensive coaches. Jerrell is not dumb. He could diagnose an offensive play on the fly during a game. There were a number of games where he would come off the field during the game or at halftime and tell the defensive staff what was happening and what adjustment he thought would help. But, you don't have to take my word at all...ask Todd Mangum if Jerrell was dumb as a bag of rocks. I think his answer will be contrary to your bud's.

Using visual alignments with real people is not unusual in practice at any level. It is used every day at every level. No big surprise there.

Granted, Jerrell got a "certificate of attendance" at WCHS, not a diploma. He has a learning disability that is legitimate. But, he can read and write.......

You are correct that OM pulled some good ones to get him qualified. They did. So did the Blind Siders to get Oher qualified. Jerrell was a victim of bad timing. Had he been trying 3 years sooner, he would have done the same as Oher. The NCAA needed a poster boy and Jerrell just happened to be the winner for them to use to put the brakes on the credit system.

I know this is common. I played the game for 14 years. The way he said it was that this was the only way they could teach him anything. I'll see what he has to say in response to your reply. I am interested in his answer.

I think we all know that Pete Boone is no position to be an athletic director, but if I'm the figurehead of an academic institution's athletic department I think he did the right thing in not getting involved in Powe's eligibility. Years later, people (not even entirely us) still slander Ole Miss's academic and recruiting integrity with Powe's case. Any AD at any school with any similar situation should back off and let the NCAA liaison for the football team do his job and keep a publicly neutral stance. Can you even imagine if Boone HAD publicly tried to help and he HADN'T gotten in? Backlash. Even if he had gotten in, it's still a lose-lose publicly.

If jerrell powe wrote that then I'm Edgar Allen Poe. You gotta love the UM letter writing for their past athletes. Miller, mcallaster, now powe. When you draft a fake message board post praising everything inside the Oxford city limits like they saw heaven itself and then write this **** like you have all these concerned ex athletes worried about Pete Boone, that just reeks of desperation and borderline mental illness.

You are just as stupid as all the other Rebels who helped this illiterate POS get into a University. If he had been white and dumb you wouldn't have turned a hand to help him. You Rebels are getting what you deserve right now and karma is a *****.

His mom worked for my aunt and SHE (his mom) said herself he COULD NOT READ. Shut the $%*# up you stupid *** Rebel. Then she turned around and told my aunt that she only let him stay in SPED so she could get more on the CHECK. My aunt is a Rebel and has no reason to lie about this.

What I will tell you guys is that the kid can read and write. His problem is the society he was brought up in. Mom is a single parent with two kids and if the kid at a real early age is sorta ADD. These parents will just say the child is crazy or stupid. They don't want the child medicated, these parents want a crazy check for those kids. Happens everyday in this state. People just don't know it goes on, but it does. So the child is automatically placed in special ed, and he will stay there because the parent learns they can get paid for it. So you never hear about the 30 or 40 more that are in the same boat only because they are not good in athletics. Happens everyday. Sad state we live in lets this go on.

Like another poster, I thought this thread was about how he finally learned to write an actual letter. My guesses were lowercase L and/or O...and if you think he actually wrote that letter you're naïve as hell! The Spellcheck/ Grammar Check function would've fried the computer by the second sentence!

Like having multiple babies to get bigger checks? Using food stamps to buy steaks? Next thing you know, you'll be telling me kids are getting passed to the next grade for social reasons...
