As a Christian, the Hugh Freeze hiring and the hiring of the athletic director gave me pause. However, as pointed out, the Bible points to a merciful God, and one that forgives. (Lord knows I don’t have transgressions as big as Hugh’s or as public, but I am in need of God’s mercy just as much as he is). I think the thing that gave me a little pause is a double standard at LU for the way their employees can behave versus their students, including graduate students. Some of the reported transgressions would have certainly made the Head Football Coach, AD, and potentially even the chancellor (whatever Jerry Jr is) ineligible to receive a degree; however, they can be gamefully employeed. This does not make Liberty a different type of University than most. I just don’t like it as a model as a Christian university. However, as a business, which is what the majority of colleges are, Liberty has a phenomenal plan. I think that’s why you see the amount of money they have and the facilities they have. The business model is top notch, and they find their niches. For example, google Liberty Law School, by far not the most prestigious in a state where you have William and Mary, UVA, and Washington and Lee among others; however, they consistently produce near the top for passing the Bar Exam. Find your niche and be successful and Liberty is doing that as a business model collegiately.
