The GOP has not moved nearly as much, Imo. The Reagan Republicans did not change much from 1980 to today. Now we have Trump moving the party in a more populist direction. This impacts things like free trade, immigration and some foreign policy, but doesn't impact things like taxes, size of government, regulations, Constitutional law, the right to life, etc. It is certainly becoming more populist in some areas.

Of the two parties, the Dems have moved much further left than the GOP has moved. They are, as polls show, moving in a socialist economic direction. They want bigger entitlements like free education. They want a single payer system of health care. They are not free speech any longer (at least a large part of the base). Not for any abortion restrictions. They are now pretty much anti-second amendment and anti-religious liberty outside the walls of the Church. They seem to be In favor of a powerful presidency as they supported Obama's EO's. There used to be some Dem fiscal hawks, no more. They seem to be ok with $20T in debt. They were once the party of the worker, now they seem more focused on the big monied elites on the coasts.

I Reagan would still recognize the GOP today. JFK would not recognize the Dems, Imo.

I do not discount the fact that some in the GOP (NEVERTRUMPers) still hate Trump and his populist movement. Certainly, the GOP is changing. Just not as much, imo.

Very good analysis PAX.

I'd say the biggest difference between the Right today and Reagan's years is today the Right is much less rigid ideologically...preferring instead the incrementalism the Left has used so successfully for the last 50 years. Trump is not a Conservative, and he couldn't have won the party's nomination 20 years ago. Today his biggest detractors in the Republican party are among Blue blood establishment types who are really Democrat lite, and prefer a Government that's bought and paid for through special interests.

I agree with you 100% on the Left. They are straight up Socialists now, and don't even try to hide it anymore.

If you remember, the media was claiming the GOP was moving too far right because of the Tea Party. Heck, the Tea Party was Reaganism. That's how corrupt the media is (either that or very, very stupid).

I loved seeing it. Basically put into reality that they have transitioned into the party of the elite. CountryRoads doesn't know what to do. Afterall, it's those damn Republican who don't care about the middle class and there for all the world to see was his party effectively booing job creation for the middle class.

DvlDog4WVU they "booed" God at their Convention...so nothing surprises me when it comes to what they're against.

Say what you want but this is not Reagan's Republican party. They have evolved from what was his through the Bush years, the Tea Party movement and what is here now.

As for the Democrats, Jack Kennedy would not claim them as they are now. Edward Kennedy, John, John Kerry would make fine pets for idiots. Harry Reid and Nancy Pelosi are idiots. Chuck Schumer is not far behind.

Without question, both parties have moved. I thought your original question was asking which party has moved the most. And I continue to believe the Democrats have moved further left then the Republicans have moved to the right. If fact I believe the Republicans are actually moving slightly left with this populist movement. You're exactly right, this is not Ronald Ragan's party any longer.
