Buying the kids a Wii for X-mas. Don't know crap about them. Been looking on-line...Best Buy, Circuit City, etc., etc. All have the basic system. Plus each have a bundled package with different things included.

My question...what are the important things I need in the package?

Most have 2 remotes and 2 nunchucks (whatever the 17 that is), sensor bar, stand, etc. One had a charger stand.

What are the must haves?

Without the sensor, remote, or the nunchucks you wont be able to play the wii like it was intended to be played.</p>

Unless you already have a rechargeable battery charger for other electronics, then just buy an 2 extra set of batteries and keep them charging while the other set is in the remotes (will save you a little cash). If your kids play it like I think they will, you'll be changing out batteries every few days...So you may just want to get the charger stand, so you can pop the remotes on when they're not playing.

Things your 'basic' wii will come with:
1 wii remote (and 1 'nunchuk' attachment I THINK)
1 wired sensor bar

Things you'll want:
at least 1 other wii remote and nunchuk combo, up to 3 more for a total of 4.
recharging stand (I love mine, it's a 2 dock charger from nyko I believe. works great)

Depending on the ages of your kids you'll want to pick up the following games:
Mario Galaxy
Mario Kart
Wii Sports (usually bundled with the system)
Rayman's Ravin Rabids (the first one...it's a little sadistic and twisted but my 5 year old loves to 'help me' play it)

That should get you started. You can PM me if you have any specific questions...
