Live and Die Stats

Can someone cosolidate these threads? I hate the phrase "live and die by the 3". It's overused. But, if everyone want's to argue whether we are or or not - I slapped together these stats that might prove useful (slow day). I included way to much here - I don't care. Interpret and discuss. Sorry if my math is wrong - I did this on the fly and didn't proof it.

Typo by me - we only lost by 6. My bad - like I said, on the fly. That loss is still terrible, however.

Back to the live and die thing. I still don't get why everyone jumps throws the phrase out like it's a bad thing. What else are we supposed to do? Let the one big we have that's worth a **** bang it inside every possession and "live and die by JV". No - we have to play the way that sets us up best to win. We have some solid shooting guards on this team - so, let them shoot. It's true that the stats show we generally win when we make our 3pt attempts and genearlly lose when we don't. What's the point? Teams generally win when they shoot well and generally lose when they shoot poorly (ignoring defense considerations). Who cares if our shots come from beyond the arc or in the paint?

You have to capitalize on the method which you have the best odds at succeeding in. A 4 guard lineup that tosses up a few more 3s/game than your average team is what we need to succeed - it plays to our strength. If the shots don't fall - then, yes, we "died by the 3". But, when we play to our strenght, at least the "live" situations occur more frequently than the "die". If we committed to JV be the lone soldier this year, we would have died permanently long ago.

I agree in that we generally win when we shoot well and generally lose when we shoot poorly - any %$!*%%$# can comprehend that. But, I'm not going to run around shouting how we live and die by the three every time we lose because it sounds cool.

I want this team to shoot the threes more than the average team does. I know they can knock them down and I know that's what gives us our best chance to be successful this year. Our success lies in our guard play - not in having JV try to overpower a guy that has 50+ pounds on him with no help.

I would never expect GA Tech to line up and throw 40+ times a game to avoid "living and dying by the option". Nor would I expect TTech to line up in the Power I and muscle it down somebody's throat to avoid "living and dying by the spread". Why? Because its insane not to play to your strengths. I'm not saying teams shouldn't make periodic adjustments - but when it comes down to it, when GA Tech does not run the option well on any given day - they are probably going to lose. And when they do, you aren't going to catch me spewing out stupid catchphrases about the option.</p>

If you are so damn tired of living and dying by the three, what would you rather live and die by? Or, if your intent is to state the obvious - congratulations, you've stated the obvious.</p>

So how many chances would he have at rebounding, if he's not altering their shot and they are going in? He is 26th in the nation in rebounding and 2nd in the Sec. bad rebounding fundamentals. i would say he has very good rebounding fundamentals - he often pulls down rebounds in traffic, and his man usually doesn't win when jarvis is trying to block out for the rebound.

the problem you're talking about has nothing to do with rebounding. the problem is that he's such a good shot blocker that he goes for the block instead of the rebound. is that a good thing? sometimes, but certainly not all the time. you're exactly right - if he misses the block, his man often has a wide open rebound and putback. well, if he doesn't challenge the shot, maybe the basket is made anyway, so there is no rebound to grab. or, maybe another teammate swoops in to grab the rebound. the problem you describe is more coaching and scheming than it is rebounding fundamentals. coaches could stress to him to stay on his man and don't go for the block. when you have the nation's leading shot-blocker, though, not many coaches are going to do that.

Ravern, Dee, Barry and Phil all shot a combined 20% from INSIDE the arc. Many that we missed, maybe a third, were layups. Thats the main reason we lost last night. It wasn't like we were having a bad night behind the 3 pt line. They were in our grill all night long. It left the driving lanes open and we missed layups. I was there I saw it. I didn't look at a stat line in the paper to reach my conclusions. That my friend is the real truth.
