I really hope this Lane thing blows up in his face. Probably won't as Sumrall may end of being a great hire. He'd better hope so.

Mississippi State is like the farm team for the rest of the SEC. It's depressing. We've got three former athletic directors at different SEC schools, and if we have any coaches who are good enough, those AD's will just hire them at their current school.

Larry Templeton was an exemplary AD.....in the 1980s and 1990s. Before him, the Athletic Department was bleeding money and had no stability. After Carl Maddox retired, they hired Alabama's Assistant AD who promptly banned cowbells and game-day ticket sales. He was followed by Charlie Carr who moved on after 2 years.

In the 1990s we went to three College World Series, a Final Four, the SEC Championship game, and finally developed a decent Ladies Basketball program.

Templeton stopped the financial bleeding and finally put the athletic department in the black. Problem was that he stayed too long and Athletics moved on to marketing geniuses who weren't afraid to invest money in sports.

Thanks Mrs. Templeton for the feedback.

That’s actually pretty good insight, Terry Lempleton.

That idiot would pace the baseline and scowl at the Hump because students had the audacity to yell “sucks” and ruffle newspapers during opposing player intros. 17 that guy.

Not to mention getting mad at students throwing tennis balls at Florida Center Dwayne Schintzus after he was accused of raping a UF tennis player.

Not that I have personal knowledge of such. 🎾🎾🎾

Let’s take a step back there.
He gets credit for Fanning and Sherrill, no doubt but he did hang on to Sherrill too long.
For basketball, he promoted an assistant.
Baseball was in crock pot mode. The only thing he could have done to screw it up was tear down Dudy Noble or let Polk go and Polk wasn’t going anywhere outside of LSU and Skip had that on lockdown.
Yeah he got us in the black at the expense of fan experience. And that’s a little easier to do when the only way to watch a game was in person outside of half the football games and few basketball games.

Has Byrne done it at Arizona or Bama? I can’t recall him poaching from us directly.

Is this you Larry? You told Stanbury just make the NIT at least once every 3 years and you'll be fine. You did balance the budget which was good but the "poor Ole Mississippi State" mentality started with you. You treated the rich boosters like gold but you treated the rest of us and students like crap. I celebrated when you were asked to leave.

Like I said, he was what was needed in the 1980s and 1990s.....problem was, he stayed until 2008.

I believe Greg Byrnes was the best Athletic Director State ever had.

Unpopular opinion: aside from being a cool guy, and probably a good recruiter, Zimmerman had yet to show he was a good field coach. If Ally Perry had not been on the team this year, there surely would have been four or five more losses.
I like it! We didn't want him anyway.
