Currently taking the classes online to get licensed to sell it all. Looking for advice and insight. How long have you been doing it?

It depends on who you are working for and with.

If you are working for a good company that doesn't press too much on hitting up your family and friends for business. The industry is all about overcoming stereotypes. If you are an honest person that advises the customer correctly, you can do well. Most companies want you to hit up your family and friends for business at first to give you a boost of business. To me, that is false gold. You can sell things but the key is to learn what you are doing. They will cut you quick if you are 3 months into the business and you can only sell to those people. You have to be good at asking for and following up with referrals. This is the easiest business you can get. You also need to (or it worked for me) find a segment of the population to specialize in calling on (doctors, attorneys, etc.). That way, you can learn some of their industry and be a specialist to them. I have made a ton of money selling to Ob/GYNs. There are plenty of times where I am the only white man in an all black woman waiting room. But, I had a few early customers in it and they led me to more. Docs pay big money. Just my $.02

That's great advice about finding a niche and not something I've heard yet. And the company in in talks with puts a lot of emphasis on friends and family and selling life is the only thing that will help you keep your job. Mind if I send you a PM?

I sell primarily home, auto, and life. I have been in the business for close to 15 years. My suggestion would be for you to go talk to some of the other agents for this company. If you talk to some that have been around for a while, they will be willing to sit down with you. I would be interested in asking them about how competitive the company is, and how much turnover they see in agents.

I do commercial property and casualty/employee benefits. Nothing to do with individuals unless a commercial client needs some personal life insurance. Residual income is great. Happy to answer any questions. Only been doing it 5 years.

I have a cpl questions if so

In the business. Three with a captive carrier selling auto home and life. 12 on the independent side selling commercial and whatever else I can. If you work for one of the captives be prepared to be a life salesMan. That is where they will put the emphasis. I found a commercial niche and did well with it. Will be glad to try and answer any questions you have.

My advice

I am an independent agent. My advice is to sell commercial p&c unless you want to be the guy that your friends say, "so and so tried to call me again. i wish he would get the point" about.

What's the best term life going now? I'm a 40 Year old non-smoking professional with no health issues other than an abnormal amount of wool growing in 2014. I'm looking for about $750K and currently paying about $700 per year through my professional society's plan. Their rates just jumped when I hit 40 so I think its time to look around.

Bump I got the job. Anyone have any advice for someone starting out in the business? Selling life mainly, but can do it all.

Good advice here

I'm on the wholesale side of p & c side of the world. Those agents have the freedom and the markets are knocking on their doors.

I've heard and seem some depressing stories about the captive agents and the guys out pushing life insurance for someone like NY Life.

Good luck to you, I'd be happy to answer any questions.

Please start a new thread. DS asks that we don't bump threads this old. Usually spammers are then only ones who do.

You'll likely get better responses that way too.
