and because we're not going to have as much depth as Bama, LSU, Florida, etc., we at MSU really can not afford to not pay attention to special teams. I would hate to be in a situation where we are about to pull an upset over Bama and the offense and defense play their hearts out and we lose becuase we can't kick an extra point or something ridiculous like that. And you could replace "can't kick an extra point" with- kick a chip shot FG, punt the ball consistently, kick the ball of consistently, snap the ball to the holder or punter, cover a kick, protect a kicker or punter adequately.
Special teams was yet another reason why Croom failed as a HC. 07 was the only year in which we were decent- I think Carlson hit 9/12 FG's, McAdams had a couple of key punts like against Auburn, although he was still inconsistent, and of course, Pegues had a huge return for us in the Egg Bowl that year. I don't think it's a coincidence that was the only year Croom went to a bowl.
Now regarding this partiular player, I have no problem offering him a scholarship after he walks on. I think just about every school does that. However, because of the limited number of players that we can sign, I would have a problem with him being with our signing class. That was my problem with Feld. We don't need to waste a spot on a guy that is likely 100% coming to MSU when we could potentially use that spot in our class for a "surprise" commit, should we be so fortunate. I have faith that Dan won't do that, though.
Of course, I think it's absolutely ridiculous that the NCAA doesn't allow schools to announce their invited walk-ons. Really NCAA? Who does that hurt? Most invited walk-ons aren't ever going to be stars, and just want to be a part of a D-I team. Many could go play D-III, but they're choosing to follow their dreams. Would it hurt to give them their day in the sun a week or so after national signing day?
