LONGTIME QUESTION: Can a late 90's MSU student explain Chuck Smooth's "who let the dogs out"

with regards to the hostile takeover by the awful...awful Baha Men. Basically, I would like any and all recollections from people who might actually have some knowledge about where the 17 it came from and how the team came up with the Dawg Pound Rock to coincide the song.

obviously, as annoying stadium anthems go..... Chuck Smooth dominated the Baha Men in the battle of "who can make the least gay stadium-anthem/one-hit-wonder".

First Question: Who the 17 is/was Chuck Smooth? If I had to guess, then I would say he was some local rapper...... BTW, I thoroughly rocked Mr. Smooth in my car in highschool during the apex of the DPR.

Second Question:
Did he rip off Anslem "Doggie" Douglas? (No-17ing-idea who that is, but my Google searches say that he wrote the earliest version that was later re-vomited by the Baha Men.... see below)

Interesting tidbit from the infallible Wikipedia page for the song, "Who Let the Dogs Out?
The first use of the song at an American sporting event was at Mississippi State University.[8] The university's mascot is the Bulldog, and the university school first played the song during football games in the fall of 1998 using the version sung by Chuck Smooth. It was accompanied by the crowd singing along and the team performing a dance on the field called "The Dawg Pound Rock" just before a kickoff.[9][10] Later the Southeastern Conference ruled that they could not perform the dance on the field, so the team moved it to the sidelines. Several other teams followed suit, and the song quickly became a national phenomenon.[11]

LONGTIME QUESTION: Can a late 90's MSU student explain Chuck Smooth's "who let the dogs out"

at the Super Dome, although sparingly. At least that was one rumor back then. I don't know who brought it to MSU, but even the blue hairs were rocking back in the day. Once the team started doing it, and we were winning back in the day, it would rock the whole stadium. The DPR was born in 1999, I believe.

As far as the actual DPR, we can all thank Kenzaki Jones for that. He was a solid special teams player, and I think he asked Sherrill if he could do something to get the guys fired up right before kickoff. Sherrill told him yes, and later said that the kickoff team could do the DPR, as long as they didn't give up any return TDs.

The Baha Men intro has absolutely killed our pregame DPR, if you ask me. It was a nice idea to try the Hangover clip, but it just didn't work. Just have someone on video say "Time to let the dogs out" or something, and then go into Chuck Smooth.

First Question: Who the 17 is/was Chuck Smooth?

That's easy - he's the neighborhood mutt... chasin' after that butt.I have never heard of Anslem Douglas.

LONGTIME QUESTION: Can a late 90's MSU student explain Chuck Smooth's "who let the dogs out"

If I remember right, the DPR came first. Debuted in the Vandy game. Kickoff team huddles while the ball is being placed on the tee and then boom, the DPR. The band then picked up on it joined in the next time. Then students. It was awesome.

Surely a few of the players knew of Chuck Smooth, liked the song and decided to see if the song could be played before kickoffs. I would assume Jackie made it happen.

LONGTIME QUESTION: Can a late 90's MSU student explain Chuck Smooth's "who let the dogs out"

it was first done on the field prior to kickoffs, then during the '98 or '99 season it was announced that the SEC would call a personal foul penalty if it was done on the field. In response, the band did it in the pregame show the following week, and the kickoff coverage team moved it to the sideline, so as not to be penalized.

so the kickoff team did the DPR, initially, with no tunes? Sounds like me when I get real sauced, that is, dancing to music...sans the music.

LONGTIME QUESTION: Can a late 90's MSU student explain Chuck Smooth's "who let the dogs out"

I don't remember the exact time line but Cosmo and mega are correct. The players did the DPR at first on the field prior to kickoff. My first impression was they were getting themselves amped up with the jumping then they broke it down with a few moves and broke huddle. It got bigger once the SEC said stop. Then, we moved it to the sideline and they played Chuck Smooth during it.

We played Chuck Smooth alot when the team wasn't doing the DPR also.

LONGTIME QUESTION: Can a late 90's MSU student explain Chuck Smooth's "who let the dogs out"

I remember Kenzakie(sp?) & DPR vividly.... I'm actually one of those pompous jackasses that tries to assert my MSU knowledge by "enlightening" others that it was not the Baha Men, but was actually, Chuck Smooth's version played in Davis-Wade.

What I really was trying to get an answer to is.... Where did Chuck Smooth and his version of "Who Let The Dogs Out" come from?.... I figured that he was someone semi-local, which leads me to ask.... "Why the 17 did he not get famous, yet you could not escape the Baha Men when they released their version a year later?"

Besides the chorus, those two versions (Anslem&Baha vs. C.Smooth) are totally different lyrically and "musically".....So did Chuck Smooth somehow hear that catchy chorus from that "Anslem" guy and rip it for very a mediocre rap song a year later? OR were the Baha Men inspired to redo the Anslem's original after possibly seeing the Smooth's version and DPR on TV? (it was pretty big **** for a moment in 1999)

Someone earlier already answered the chicken-or-the-egg aspect of the song and DPR that I had always wondered about, which turned out to be the opposite of what I expected.

LONGTIME QUESTION: Can a late 90's MSU student explain Chuck Smooth's "who let the dogs out"

before being paired with Chuck Smooth.

The SEC didn't particularly make a rule regarding the DPR. It was actually Georgia's fault we had to move to the sideline. That year, Georgia's players (the entire team)stomped on the T in Knoxville prior to the game. The SEC reaction was to, from then on, call a 15 yard personal foul on any on-field activity that could look choreographed or be taunting. So the rule obviously applied to the DPR, and it was then moved to the sideline (I'm sure some others had protested about the DPR, too).

The rule actually made it stronger, as the whole team then got into it. The best clip is from the 1999 Egg Bowl, after the Sirmones late TD to tie. I think it's on Youtube.

LONGTIME QUESTION: Can a late 90's MSU student explain Chuck Smooth's "who let the dogs out"

A 42-0 beatdown, so the kickoff guys had enough opportunities to break it down. After a couple of times, the band and students had caught on. It was awesome.

LONGTIME QUESTION: Can a late 90's MSU student explain Chuck Smooth's "who let the dogs out"

there was a Relector article, I think in the Entertainment Section, about Chuck Smooth and his version of this song, sometime around 2000-2001.

I don't remember the details, but I don't think he had any connection to Starkville or Mississippi State. It was just a song that worked with our mascot. I also have a vague recollection that Chuck Smooth did the song first, and the Baja Men totally redid it.

LONGTIME QUESTION: Can a late 90's MSU student explain Chuck Smooth's "who let the dogs out"

Stansfield was working at BeBop at the time. Someone from MSU came into the store and asked him if he had a song that would fit their request. He in turn gave them who let the dawgs out by Chuck Smooth.
The rest is history.

This story is absolute fact.

I take credit for putting MSU in the WLTDO wiki article (and have had to delete some high school in Alabama from taking undocumented credit for being first).
