Manny Diaz, co-defensive coordinator, Mississippi State: Diaz, a former ESPN production assistant whose father was mayor of Miami, loves to bring pressure from unexpected places. During his time at Middle Tennessee State, this resulted in big plays. Last year, the Blue Raiders finished second in the nation in tackles for loss, sixth in sacks, eighth in turnovers gained and 12th in interceptions. Diaz, 36, seems plenty capable of handling the p.r. duties required of a head coach, and he could always ask his dad for tips on how to be the CEO of a large, complex organization.

That swagger comes mostly from Diaz, the 38-year-old hired in the offseason from Middle Tennessee State. He arrived in Starkville at a good time: His defense returns eight players who started more than four times last season, and his intensity fits in nicely with the head coach, Dan Mullen.</p>

My eternal MSU pessimism tells me he just looks the part at this point. If we keep Malzahn in check on Week 2, I'm on this bandwagon quick. Hopefully that happens. He would be a great insurance policy on a potential Mullen departure after a nice season or two.

from top to bottom the best coaching staff in football that we've ever had at MSU. I know they have to prove that on the field but I have more confidence in this group on BOTH sides of the ball than I've ever had in any previous staff.
