I had a hardware failure a few months ago and after replacing virtually everything in my desktop, the win7 build on my hard drive still ran fine with some minor driver issues (ie them not being installed since it was newer stuff). It's the best OS I've ever seen.

PS Safari is probably the shittiest web browser I've ever used. That said I do enjoy my iphone.

I am tentative to make the switch to Windows 7. I've got most of my files backed up and making the switch wouldn't be too difficult but there is a lot of software that might endure compatibility issues that I rather not risk dealing with. I am planning to upgrade computers over the course of the next year so I feel like this machine will have to run its course with XP as its OS.

($7 Windows 7 Ultimate from the University Bookstore. Couldn't pass it up)
So far the biggest hassle has been re-downloading/installing the vast majority of the programs I had installed in XP. But the Windows Transfer program at least lets you know what won't work up front.
To make it MSU related (and possible ideas for the Fark board): does anyone have some decent (preferably1440x900) Bulldog-related background images? I know: prayers sent, defender stargate, lmgtfy, etc.

unless you have 16 bit applications(which would likely be over 10 years old) everything you are able to run on xp you should be able to run on win7. compatibility mode rocks. you can also lookup to see if your application has any problems in win7, as most likely someone has tried to run it.

Problems I ran into when changing to win7:

-my 13 year old sound card didn't work anymore (I changed to use onboard which is actually better quality anyway)
-my 16 bit applications (really old games like Dungeon Keeper) wouldn't run anymore.

Of course, I went to 64 bit OS so you might have better luck with a 32 bit win7.

If I remember correctly, I think Microsoft is going to stop supporting Windows XP and Vista sometime this fall. Windows 7 is way more stable than Vista ever was. Go ahead and make the switch - you won't regret it.

Windows XP Service Pack 2 support is ending. You have to have Service Pack 3. If they stopped supporting XP this fall, a large % of corporations who use Microsoft operating systems would be in a world of hurt.
