36 out of the top 50 are already committed. That's unreal. All the good ones go quick, apparantly. Is there any such thing as a "diamond in the rough QB" anymore?

Just curious on your stance.

By the way, Alex Smith agrees with you (I believe he was a 2 star).

hahaha- just wanted to do that

As far as Relf, he is a starting QB in the SEC for an offense that will average 400 yards a game in 2010- not to mention he is beating out a 4-star QB for the job...that should make him a DITR....

and we're on our own 15yd line...Tyler Russell will be our QB. I'll bring this up again at the end of season. But, I totally agree that Relf is gonna do great running the ball for us, but Russell will be to goto guy at the end of the season. Either way, we will have a significant upgrade in the QB position.

this Spring- why would we put the inferior QB in when it matters most? What he did in HS is a memory- this is SEC football now

Ibelieve Tyler has more talent and better leadership skills and will be the starter by the end of the season. Call it a hunch or whatever. I may be completely wrong...we'll see. Im not gonna judge much of anything based on a spring game.

He's got a better mental game than Campbell at this stage of their careers, but Campbell has him on the athletic/physical aspect. I think, like JC, Russell will take time to mature and will be a solid QB by his Jr. year and be a very successful player his Sr. year. Those last two years could be very very exciting for MSU football. I just hope Mullen is still here.

there is no QB controversy at State...and Russell will not start until Relf graduates, starts smoking dope again, or gets hurt

He will play because our back-up needs experience. But we are not about to put a QB on the field full-time that can't run until we get better WR's or we get a new HC

One of the reasons it will be Relf is leadership skills.Relf is on the team's leadership committee and theplayers respond to him.Russellstill hassome maturing to do.

I'd love to see TR start from day 1 and become the next superstar as much as the next guy, but I think many are devaluing what experience brings to the table at the QB position. Sure, Russell has a lot of raw talent and ability, but I see no reason to expect him as QB A any time this season unless Relf is a huge bust. There's no way I see Russell playing his way into the starting QB.

Relf might play himself out of it, but I think you are setting yourself up for disappointment if you think our redshirt freshmen QB is going to play his way into the leader of the offense. It's very rare that that ever happens - especially when the competition is experienced and shows a ton of upside with their athletic ability - which is highly valued in our system.

experience plus Relf's running ability gives him the job hands down. There is not even a question right now as to who our QB is.

I'm also willing to bet that Russell was blitzed more than Relf during the Spring Game to ensure there would be no controversy or doubts heading into the offseason as to who the QB will be.

Agreed coach. What a guy does in high schoolno longer matters. What a guy does at MSU is all that matters. We get points if Vic Ballard or Robert Elliott puts the ball in the end zonethis fall. We don't get points because Ballard had a good career at JUCO or Elliott scored some touchdowns for Okolona. I still hate the mentality that some posters have toward what a guy did in high school.Example ispeople still think Antonio Hargro was a stud wideout when he couldn't carry Will Prosser's jock when it came to being an SEC caliber wideout(and Prosser wasn't exactly Jerry Rice).

Mullenand staff will coach the crap out of Relf, Russell, and Favre, and will find a way to utilize them in their careers if they can play. If they don't pan out, they won't play. Russell's 4-star rating and Favre'srecord book numbers don't mean crap.

Relf is gonna be the man, but Tyler will play.

I think we're gonna see Tyler take 1, maybe 2 drives a half. Pretty much what we saw Relf do last year.

Discuss that any way you want but he was quoted saying they are co starters. I dont have time to look for the article cause I have a test to study for but it was there. It was from a clarion ledger article. Both are going to play the entire season, and I dont mean one for 3 and a half quarters and then the other, I mean 50/50 or close on average.

And let me go ahead and say this right now- if the game is on the line against Arkansas, and we need a TD to win, and Relf gets us to the 15 AND then Dan puts in Tyler Russell, we better damn well score- or I can tell you there will definately be a LSU style Todd4State meltdown post on sixpackspeak. I would be ROYALLY pissed off if Relf gets us down into the red zone, and then Dan puts in a RS freshman QB and it doesn't work out. That's actually kind of ****** when you think about it- "Hey Chris! Thanks for taking the team down there. Now let's let Tyler get the glory for the drive you directed."

Of course, that doesn't really make any sense to me because why would you take out your best running QB in the red zone for a passing QB unless it's like 4th and goal from the 15 or something like that- and even then I'd still stay with Relf? It's a heck of a lot harder to throw the ball in the red zone, and putting in Russell essentially take out another good running option. Not to mention again, his experience. I like what we did a lot of times down there- go with the wishbone and just run over people. I always used to wonder why people didn't go to the wishbone in goal line situations- I'm glad to see that maybe we're "cutting edge" for once in football offense.

Heck, in the red zone, Relf makes a heck of a lot more sense even if he struggles and Russell beats him out.

You must have been fed paint chip infested Gerbers as a child if you honestly think that Tyler Russell will be our "go-to" guy by the end of the season. He is just a RS freshman, sure he'll get some playing time but when the game is on the line you better bet your cowbell that the ball will be going to our most productive returning offensive weapon of last year (yardage-wise). He IS our qb.

And as good of a quarterback coach Mullen has proven to be, if you don't think that Relf will be improved enough to take the game into his hands when it matters then you need to rethink our hiring of Mullen and of his staff. He is a great coach. Granted, he's only had one year to display his talents, but try to tell me that our team didn't look like a betterthanmediocre team last year. We looked like a team that WANTS IT. Our Defense wasn't very good, but that's because Torbush was not a very good coach and I, as are you I'm sure, am damn glad he is gone. But I'm talking about our our INTENSITY and our relentless effort, the way our ball club refused to quit. It sure is strange compared to croom ball.

If I'm wrong about Tyler Russell being the goto guy at the end of the season I'll sayI'm wrong- not until then. Like I said before, either way we'll see a significant upgrade at the QB position. I just want us to win.

But I don't think we will get many W's with TR running the offense. He looked pretty young in the spring game. I know it's just the spring game but that is even worse IMO, he wasn't even facing all SEC caliber players. He was facing a defense peppered with SEC starters, walk-ons, and back ups. But hopefully he will mature this year, get a little playing time under his belt and adjust to the speed and talent that accompanies playing in the best conference in the nation.

He will be a good QB, hopefully, but not this year. Too young, too inexperienced, and he's probably still slightly intimidated. He doesn't have the insane athletic ability that needs to be on the field this year. It will be a growing year for him to build a little confidence and get used to the SEC game. Maybe next year they will be "dual starters" but I don't see him playing a tremendous amount when it counts.
