So I'm getting ready for football season, and I dust off a VHS tape of 1997 MSU vs. Alabama. MSU went into Tuscaloosa ranked #17 and had just blanked Auburn 20-0. JJ Johnson rips off 83 yards for a TD in the 1st quarter. They all had Keefer patches on their jerseys. Matt Wyatt at QB.
But what I saw on the field there was something that I haven't seen in awhile. They had a swagger. They were pushing Alabama around. Nevermind that Alabama under Dubose was anemic, they were stillAlabamaat home.MSU went on to win 32-20.
I should probably lay off the old games and keep from getting too wooly, but it did feel good to own both Auburn and Alabama that year.

First of all, beating the Gumps at home was a nice win. However, I was there and remember that day well. That place was lifeless that day. Maybe it was the weather because it was cold and overcast. But I have seen us play there a number of times and never seen it like that. Just to give others an idea, I did not have tickets to the game. I found a ticket brooker outside the stadium. I won't pretend to remember how much I paid for tickets. However, I know myself well enough I would not have paid over face value. We got tickets on the 50 yard line in the chairbacks. Pissed a few Bamers off but we had fun.

Anyway, they were down that year but still decent. But, yes, we had a good team that year.

hangover and the feeling of only having about 3 hours sleep from the night before.
The rest was all Good!
8 of us left Bham at 7:30 and we parked in some womansyard about 500 yds from the EZone where our seats were. We paid the lady 10.00 bucks and she let us use the bathroom inher house whenever we needed it.
Absolutely kickeduat's *** that day!
Stadium was very quite except for all the State fans in that EZ.
I had a customer who hadseason tickets for over 30 years and he didnt even go that day because he knew the tide wasgoing to be verylow that day!

but kept having drives stall and settling for field goals. That team had Atlanta in their sights until the trip to Arkansas and, of course, the Egg Bowl. Damn you Stewart Patridge and Corey Peterson.

I was at the the game. That first Alabama drive we looked like little children. Bama drove the field like we were not even on the field. Then something kicked in and we dominated. 1997 is the only year in Alabama history that they did not win a home game. We got there early and I remember the police had dogs in the stands looking for a bomb. There was a death threat made against Dubose.

I think swagger is the biggest difference between the good 90's teams and what we've seen recently. Win or lose, those 90s teams were going to push around and beat up everybody they played. It was hard for a team to beat us. Yeah it could be done, but a price had to be paid. Those 90s teams brought the wood and believed that they could beat anybody.

I think this is where Mullen is taking us. With maybe less emphasis on the reckless personal fouls. lol

1997 was JJ Johson. We ended up going 7 and 4 losing to Ole Miss the last game of the year after TT went for two at the end of the game. Both Ole Miss and State were 7 and 4. We both were bidding for the last bowl game which was the motor city bowl and Ole Miss got the bid because they beat us.

He did have that one year he won the SEC but over all the program did go down. Don't matter now, Alabama is king dog in the college football world.

Georgia 47-0 in '97 and LSU 41-6 in '98 always sort of blew my mind. To a lesser degree, Oklahoma State in '98. We had the swagger but sometimes just didn't show up.

I guess we were just forming the swagger in those first two years, maybe their heads got too big a couple of time.Because in '99 and '00, I truly thought we would win every game we played. Florida at home in '00, there was no question, I knew we would win. Same with the Auburn game - those are just two that stood out in my mind.

Miller was on the team along with Justin Griffin who later moved to full back and played for Atlanta. JJ Johnson was a transfer from junior college. That was the year McGee died during the summer and JJ became our main back. The Next year we won the West and JJ pulled a hamstring muscle before the Ole Miss game and Griffin carried the ball a good bit that game but JJ ran it on the big down plays. Miller did run the ball some but he was still pretty young and skinning. That year we got our *** handed to us by Texas and the pot smoking running back. JJ was drafted byMiami in 1999. I believe walker joined the team in either 98 or 99. I believe Bouie and Davis played on the team that played against NC State in the Peach Bowl. They were the one two punch for Miss State. Or it could have been the beach bowl against North Carolina. Those would be the 1993 and 1995 Peach bowls. Now I am going on memory and could be wrong about the Peach Bowl.

Well anyways they were all good years for Miss State Football. Even in 96 with the losing season we beat Alabama and I think that was the first year of a three year in a roll of wins over Alabama. I don't see that happening again.
