GP reported that the Dodgers were coming to make their final offer in person and Conner was not at the first team meeting last night per Msubulldogschip on GP.

what he thought at the time. MLB negotiations are so fluid with guys that I can easily see where one month it looks like someone's gone and the next it looks like he'll be back.

Gene wasn't the only person getting different impresssions at different times.

hopefully, they're just coming in person to overshadow their ridiculously low offer

but if I'm a player and I'm still negotiating with a MLB team, there's no need to be at the first team meeting or any team meeting until the deadline finally passes, which is 10 PM CT tonight. I'm sure Cohen understands.

Edit to correct myself- time is 11:01 CT.

they keep talking about CC Watson attending class. Maybe they are just saying that's a good sign nothing is going ot happen at the last minute.

the "old" rule was that once a player steps foot into class, he couldn't be signed.

This was somewhat vague though, because I remember when Kirk Presley of all people was drafted, he was actually on campus for a very short period of time and the Mets got an extension from MLB because Presley played American Legion ball. I was pretty uspet about it at the time.

I'm going to have to check and see if the stepping into class rule is an official rule or if it is an expression. I would have to say that with schools starting at different times, it's probably more of an expression.

It wouldn't be fair if a player at State got a day or two less of negotiating time because their classes started a day or two ahead of Ole Miss. (Just an example)

that he practiced with the football team in August, then didn't enroll in school when school started (not sure if he quit practicing with the team then or not). Then about a week later he signed with the Mets and never enrolled in school. The rule then was that when you enrolled in school you couldn't sign. I don't remember anything about the Mets getting any kind of waiver, just that Pressley didn't enroll in school when it started.

In the above rules, they talk about a player "returnuing to school on a full time basis", so I guess that's where the "stepping into class" thing comes in. My guess is that Conner hasn't enrolled yet, and if he can't come to terms with the Dodgers, will just enroll tommorrow. I think "full time basis" can be construed as pretty vague, and I don't know that going to one class would necessarily violate the rules.

From the website:

"A Club generally retains the rights to sign a selected player until 11:59 PM (EDT) August 15 (17th this year), or until the player enters, or returns to, a four-year college on a full-time basis. A player who is drafted and does not sign with the Club that selected him may be drafted again at a future year's Draft, so long as the player is eligible for that year's Draft. A Club may not select a player again in a subsequent year, unless the player has consented to the re-selection."

You have something like 2 weeks to start classes if I remember correctly. I would think if you needed more negotiation time, the student would just delay starting school. A freshman would be able to make up a schedule after classes started, it just might contain more 8 am classes.
