Looks like Kirby Smart to OM might happen pretty soon.

A connected Alabama friend of mine says it looks like it's probably going to happen soon. I think this is actually a pretty decent hire for them if this in fact pans out. Kirby Smart got to learnfrom Saban, and has been a position coach at LSU, FSU, and the Dolphins. If so, they probably got one of the better legitimate guys they could get. </p>

Georgia boy. Good recruiter. Actually, excellent recruiter. Sat under probably the best defensive mind in college football.

But no HC experience at all.

Very high energy guy.

it "depends on what he is looking for or what he is planning to get out of the recruiting process". May also depend on Chris Wilson's status at MSU if Mullen does bolt.

Don't be a Smart a$$.
When we win egg bowl #4 in a row: Ouch, now that Smarts.

Plenty of retaliatory room for play there, too.

one of the top three, the others being Fedora and Freeze. Either of these would be very good hires for UM. I also liked Hudspeth but the incident involving his personal conduct at UNA apparently cooled the appeal for Mark. Also, there is the law suit against Ole Miss by his assistant coach, Saunders which probably played a part. Of course, there's always a "dark horse" who may appear. Time will tell.

Shmuley you and me could go pull in a top 5 recruiting class at Bama under Saban. Until he recruits well at a lesser school, Ill hold off on the excellent recruiter status.

To me the danger with a defensive coach is that you're probably never going to have the defensive talent to be better than LSU or Bama on that side of the ball. Which means to beat those guys you need to be able to outscore them.

To me, OM and MSU need to recruit offensive coaches and then focus on hiring the best DC's they can find. To beat other good SEC teams we're generally going to have to find a way to score 20+ points which is difficult against those defenses. Mullen has proven that you can have a good D with a offensive mind as the HC and that's the route I would want us to contiue to take should Mullen leave now or later.

Not sold on Smart. None of Saban's assistants have ever panned out...Muschamp, Jimbo Fisher, Josh McDaniels, Derek Dooley, etc... The book is still out with Mucschamp. The fact of the matter of the matter is Saban micromanages and controls his coaches to death, which I think has really hurt them in the head coaching role.

Dantonio has done pretty well. But your point is taken on the others at this point.

Kirby Smart is basically a glorified position coach. Saban is the defensive coordinator for that team. And Saban assistants haven't exactly set the world on fire as head coaches. Dooley just had the worst back-to-back seasons in anyone's memory at Tennessee. Muschamp just had the worst season Florida has had in over 20 years. Fisher hasn't done much at Florida State. Dantonio is doing pretty good at Michigan State, but he has a lot more resources than a UM coach would and doesn't have nearly the competition to deal with.

Muschamp was a Saban man too. How is that working out. I think UF is having one of the worst season in recent memory, and they are one of the most talented teams in CFB. You never know what you're gonna get. Saban is such a control freak that he can't let his assistants do much.

I see your point, but I do disagree to a point, I don't think UF's problems were defense near as much as offense and you can think Jabba the Hut for that.

Saban must have mellowed. When we wanted to talk to Jimbo Fisher in 2003, he would not allow the distraction as he was prepping for a big bowl game. No offense to Croom but think we would have hired Fisher but could not wait until January to interview him.
