Damn! That hire looks like Kentucky had to pay the full buyout and didn't have any money left for the next coach. They've come a long way from names like Hurley, Pearl, Donovan, etc. to Mark freaking Pope. Wonder how many of their fans are wishing they had Calipari back.

It actually is a good hire when you look at what he has done at previous stops

Okay, I’ll be the Contrarian:

This may be the best hire Kentucky could have made after Tier 1 and likely the best available Pitino Coaching Tree candidate not named Kevin Keatts— or Rick Pitino.

They would have hired someone with ties back to Adolph but this was the best they could do.

Certainly could be the case. I guess the issue is why on earth UK would have to settle for anyone below Tier 1?

He’d be a real good hire for Mississippi State. Not for Kentucky though. I think they got caught by surprise when Cal said bye & panicked.

Yeah I mean at the end of the day its still UK basketball. If he can coach even a little bit he’s going to have tremendous success, and it looks like he can. He is the polar opposite of a Rick Ray or Kenny Payne in terms of qualifications.
