Looks like the Biloxi baseball stadium is going to be a go.

Sounds like either the Jackson, TN or Huntsville Southern League team may be relocating to Biloxi. I knew Jackson, TN had really struggled for a while. Link

It's a pretty little park there in Jackson. Too bad they are losing The team. They built it into the side of a hill.

That does suck if Jackson, TN loses their team...

Maybe they can host summer ball, high school, and small college tournaments there if the Mariner's farm team leaves.

Got mixed feelings if it is Jackson TN. On the one hand, it's pretty confusing to look at the Southern League standings and see Jackson and then realize, oh wait, that's not us. But I have family ties on both sides from there and still have a couple of cousins that live there. But I never really understood why they put a team there in the first place. It's real small for a AA city and there's a AAA team in Memphis. Biloxi will have those same challenges plus another AA team in Mobile. Hope it works out for them though. A nice stadium in that location would be pretty awesome.

another thing besides the Bay Bears is the other AA team right down the road in Pensacola. I've been to a few Blue Wahoos games and they have a good following.

The best thing about it's location

is it's right behind this little building called the Beau Rivage. That will protect some of the wind and surge, just as it did in Katrina for buildings right behind it. My guess is it will be an all concrete structure though.

Sounds like parking will be a nightmare. His quote made it sound like they aren't adding parking at all. But i'd be cabbing it anyway. Obviously, i'm thrilled about this!

From what I heard (emphasis on heard) last night, at Beau Rivage:

Baseball field will be closer to Howard Avenue, than U.S. 90, facing a E-SE direction.
A parking structure will be built on the south end of the property (north side of US 90), where Beau Rivage employees now park.
Enclosed pedestrian bridge(s) will be built crossing US 90.

We'll should know for sure at the presser this afternoon @ 3:00.

The Beau right behind it makes me want it somewhere else. I think it would be better suited if they built it in the old Point Cadet area. It would be better parking, have better views (instead of a wonderful, picturesque view of the beau), and people could even park their boats behind the outfield and wait for balls flying into the back bay.

on site parking will meet league requirements but additional parking demand throughout the immediate area is part of the strategic plan... eventually benefit other business owners in the area as more of the "walking district" is developed.

So many nay-sayers in this thread. I'm sure they will completely forget to consider the storm surge and wind threat when building a multi-million dollar structure. They will also forget about taking parking into consideration. "Make-em-walk"

Yea they better hurricane proof the thing.

Side Note: Yesterday on SVP or Herd they where talking about how low MLB attendance is across the board, and has been for years. Not allot of people want to pay a bunch of money and go watch a 3.5 hour baseball game during a week night when they are not hitting homeruns like they used too.

Maybe a blessing in disguise for Huntsville if its the Stars. As a HSV resident I would hate to see them relocate, but definitely couldn't blame them as the ballpark is pretty old and poorly located. Both of those factors impact the attendence pretty heavily. If Huntsville loses its AA team it may give the city the impetus to build a new park close to the downtown / VBC area, which would do wonders for development in and around the area. Basically they could do what Biloxi is doing now (and what Pearl did with Trustmark) to try and attract another team.

Free 20 year lease from beau. It's going right there. It will hopefully revitalize downtown Biloxi where half shell went in and a few other bars.

The Wahoos stadium is gorgeous. As for the post about hurricanes. Are all coastal cities supposed to forgo baseball stadiums because of them?

I pretty much like the location of the existing park ... easy to get to and lots of parking. But ... the trend seems to be toward downtown stadiums, so that's what Huntsville will need to do. Perhaps we can get an AAA team.

I think the big drawback though is not the location of the stadium ... it's the affiliation with the Brewers. Nobody cares about that team. When it was the A's, they were a super team and did well locally. If they could affiliate with the Braves, the local favorite, then AA or AAA would thrive. I doubt that's going to happen though.

I think it is hard to revitalize something that hasn't been vital in quite some time. I don't remember downtown Biloxi as ever being something to go to. I love the idea of the stadium being on the water (at Point Cadet, where there is nothing now) and utterly object to having the Beau Rivage backdrop, but I'm just a small fry.

So is Dale Partners drawing the stadium?.. Also..

In the initial rendering I really like how they already have the gulf waters flooding the Beau Rivage and Hwy 90.

I think the State and Biloxi have plans to turn the Point Cadet area into a large marina facility/park/fishing area. It should be nice.

Also - I don't get the arguments against this ballpark. Like other folks have said, what was there near the Jackson I-55/I-20 interchange before the Miss. Braves? Caillavette St. has always had potential to be the Beale St of the Gulf Coast, and hopefully this ballpark will lead to the opening of several bars, restaurants, etc. It's what is needed to link the beachfront to the backbay. This is genius...and not to mention, the land comes rent-free.

As for Katrina, I'm assuming the folks making the argument don't live on the Gulf Coast? We have hurricanes, but rarely as strong as Katrina. I guess since Katrina, nobody should build anything within a mile from the Coast to make some folks happy (but then, what about those criticizing the view??).

I'm very excited, and can't wait to buy season tickets. My only hope at this point is that they don't name the teams something casino related (Please, oh please, don't let our team be the "Black Jacks").

Parking will be generall provided by existing parking garages at the Beau and Hard Rock. Also, the plan is to use existing surface parking in downtown, with most of that being within a 2-3 block walk. No significant difference in distance from stadiums with large surface lots.

As it was told to me, they will build a huge storage vault to capture surge water and use it for field irrigation...so all you hurricane alarmists can calm down. High level planners are at work here.

Also, while Pt. Cadet would be awesome...your Sect. of State aint playing ball.

I don't spy any sarcasterisk's so these "high level planners" must not be MSU turfgrass grads, storm surge water would be salt water and for "field irrigation" on the grass that would go over like a daffodil on the MSU campus..........

Certain pieces of land near Pt Cadet would have been pretty cool but it doesn't make much sense for this stadium. (1) Beau donated the land and this single piece of land is more than enough... no need to deal with numerous property owners that would want big $, (2) the stadium will be within walking distance of over 2,000 hotel rooms, (3) all of the water, sewer, etc... is already in place and ready for use, (4) all immediate roads are the best scenario for getting people in & out with HW90, I-110 and a totally revamped Cailvette already completed. (5) the elevation of this land and surrounding land (future developement of entertainment district) is higher than anything near Pt Cadet. This means easier for future developement due to insurance rates and building requirements.

I'm also excited. There are areas around to be rebuilt, like where Bombay Bicycle Club used to be and all the surrounding area. There's quite a bit of undeveloped area around Half Shell also so I see their reasoning behind the location. I just don't like the idea of having the Beau Rivage standing over right center. The thought of it being RIGHT on the water is really appealing to me though, like Point Cadet or even the Biloxi Grand/Margaritaville fiasco/Greek temple it is now.

Ok, maybe I shouldnt assume what you know...

Really? Check out the link before you assume sarcasterisk's aren't needed. I'll assume then that your parking lot info was BS too and therefore the whole post was irrelevant?

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Stormwater_detention_vault

There is no plan to build a underground storm surge vault. Stormwater detention vault =/- storm surge detention vault. Minor difference in words, significant difference in application. I was poking fun at the those that thought no one had considered that the stadium is being built in a hazard zone. My parking info is not BS. There will be some on-site parking, but the plan is to encourage access to downtown by having stadium visitor park in the downtown.
