Looting...

you (and everyone of the "stealing is wrong posters) totally missed the point of my post. I didn't ask was it wrong to go into someone's home and loot something. My question was is it wrong to go into a destroyed grocery store and take food? Not footlocker for Jordans... Not best buy for a 55" TV.... I'm talking about a grocery store or convenience store to get food.

Some of you high and mighty people kill me. I'm telling you now... If my family is hungry after an emergency situation, I'm getting what they need. And guess what, so would every one of you.

You're basically asking "when is it ok to steal". I don't know the answer to that. The question has too many variables. Would I steal if my families' life is on the line? Absolutely.

If you are breaking into grocery stores 12 hours after a hurricane hit then "17 you". You aren't in dire straights 12 hours after the fact. You are simply being an opportunistic thug.

Let me ask you, is it ok to break into someone's house and loot it for food as well? What's the difference? Both are personal property. You're placing perimeters on the situation based on scale. Let's say you had a year of rations for your family. Would it be ok for other to rob you because you had "a lot" of food?

I'm not treating the aftermath of a hurricane like a nuclear holocaust just occurred, but evidently a lot of people do.

Would you have a problem if she was looting stuff in your house?
Honestly, if I had necessities in my house that could help another human, I'd have no problem with it. They take my 4K Samsung? I'm cutting hands off.

Understand the OP. Just asking if you would feel any different about the situation if the 'hungry' person was breaking into your house. It's not a hard question.

Once again... A well thought out response.

And I guess you're right. I'm asking is it ok to steal in certain situations. To answer your question, I do not think its ok to break into someones house to loot for food. That being said, if my family and I are starving in the aftermath of a disaster... And I know a house has food and is uninhabited, Id get it.

What started this whole thread is I saw a tweet poking fun at a lady "helping clean up a local grocery store". The pic was a lady with several Bacardi 6 packs in hand and a variety pack of cereal. This was suppose to mirror the meme of the guys "rescuing" Jordans out of a footlocker. I just don't see the two acts as the same. We have no idea what the lady's situation was. And I could easily see myself in her shoes if I had just lived through that calamity. The footlocker guys though....

No... It's not a hard question. I just felt like you were changing the subject. To answer... If I'm home, no one is coming in my house to get anything. If I'm not home... Say ive evacuated and my house has food that someone needs, then they can have at it. I have insurance for these cases.

I'm doing the same. Hell, if it's truly life or death, I'm doing even if the house in inhabited. It boils to necessity vs opportunistic thuggery. If my kids are dieing, I'm breaking every moral code and law to save them. Period. The end. If they simply want some pop tarts and coke from the grocery store, I'm not looting.

I grew up in Gulfport, MS, lived through many major storms including the BIG ONE, Camille. Our house was damaged, but we survived. No looting as my family had morals. Justify illegal ways as needed, but some people prefer not to be scumbags.

You are assuming that 12 hrs after a hurricane everything is ok and back to normal. Not the case in most areas directly affected by a hurricane. the question proposed was in regards to a grocery store and not a private residence. In my experience when the **** hits the fan ,the folks who have goods end up sharing with those without and looting food stores becomes a necessity for everyone. Not just food but sanitary products too.

I am not assuming it's fine and back to normal. I know it's not. I also know at that point, you are just somewhat hungry (and poorly prepared). It's not life and death unless you are an infant, sickly, or elderly. For the 5th time, when people in Miami are robbing grocery stores on Monday, 12 hours after the storm hits, 99% of them are simply being opportunistic thugs.

I've always gotten the impression that's what Texas wants people to think.

There is this idea that Texans walk around with six shooters waiting for a gun fight.

"Don't Mess with Texas"
"Keep your guns, come to Texas"
"Everything's bigger in Texas"
"Texas Tough"
etc. etc.
The football team is the Cowboys.

Don't get me wrong, I like it... Hell, I'm jealous. Just saying, that's probably why you have that reputation.

It sounds like y'all are doing a great job helping people in need as well. Good on you.

Stealing is stealing, but I'll turn a blind eye to bread and water. Texas seemed to not have a lot of looting issues for some reason...

The big grocery store chain HEB had stores open less than 48 hours after the storm. No need to Loot for food if the store is open.

Of the 83 total in Houston, 60 were open the next day.

Stealing is wrong. All the time.

How can you justify stealing bread and water a day after a hurricane hits...that you know has been coming for a week?

What if a tornado spins off and wipes out your stash? Or your house floods because the levee is overtopped, leaving you minutes to evacuate your safe home?
