Being optimistic about the Nebraska football program defines somebody as stupid, especially In July after a half decade of being the worst team in the nation, we lost our two best offensive players, our two best defensive players and hired a coach that was fired half-way through a miserable season. I'll watch every game but Rhule is just a coach, he hasn't won anything, ever...took over for a good temple team after Narduzzi left and a Baylor team that WAS a perennial contender before sanctions. He didn't do anything unusual at either school, and didn't stay at either long enough to measure how he actually builds a program. I like him, he seems to at least feign caring about doing the job well, which is something we haven't had in 10 years at least...but giving a guy 8 million up front, then watching him hire friends at premium dollar, none of which are top coaches at their positions or recruiting doesn't breed confidence. Just imagine the poor saps that still pay 1000 for season tickets and donate to the program for this idiocy. Just noticed a nice big billboard outside the stadium asking for more money? What a joke!
Hasn’t done anything after Narduzzi left …. I think you mean Addazio who went 4-7 his last year. While Rhule went 2-10 year 1 he went 6-6 and then two straight seasons of 10 wins (first and only time they had won 10 games in the schools history and they did it twice).
To say that Baylor was a perennial winner when Rhule took over without noting the crap storm he walked into would be disengenious. You used “before sanctions” as a throw away line and acted like he did nothing at Baylor.
He’s not won anything yet but both his OC DC have Power 5 experience which was something the last staff couldn’t say. Also I don’t believe Tony White and Rhule had worked together before so I think it’s inaccurate to see he only hires his buddies.
It’s fine to say he hasn’t won anything but he certainly appears to be someone who is developing a plan, executing a plan and putting the right foundation in place. At the very least fans could be excited about that because we haven’t seen it in ages.

Don’t get me wrong, I probably spend too much time on here myself……But could you imagine spending as much time on a message board of a team that you don’t cheer for? All the while pretending to be a fan of that team. What a miserable existence. What is the end game?
the faithful on the board surely will go after you for this post, even though, there isn't a whole lot to argue with..
Even though I know the hype leading up to the season is bs, I still hold out a small glimmer of hope, until the 3rd game and it's obvious that the season will be another kick in the nuts.
It can be fun to troll the faithful on here, but sometimes even that in and of itself isn't much fun anymore.
Let's look at what we know is actually true at this point, and that is Matt Rhule gives great speeches.
He's like the Obama of Nebraska football, and clearly people eat that stuff up. The more bs that rolls off his tongue, the more certain people get a boner..
I just see him as another guy who can say whatever the people want to hear and do it with a smile, and be believable.. there is a word (or two) for people like that, one is a salesman, another is a reverend, and the third is not allowed to be discussed on this board.
He says he wants to run the ball, so I want to see him do that this year. No crap, no excuses, no take what the defense gives you, or any other garbage. Do what you say you will do. Let's start there and see what happens.
When you think like a troll it’s hard to see that it is a troll. Not saying you’re a troll, cuz I do believe you’re a husker fan. But how can you read this guy and even for a second think he is a legit husker fan?
Baylor had 45 scholarship players when Rhule got there. Think about that. He got fired from the NFL. No shame in that. The list of unsuccessful NFL but successful colleges coaches is pretty decent.
What isn't there to be optimistic about? Guy isn't even 50 and he has coached 2 college programs very successfully and an NFL team not so successfully.
And I don't think he hired buddies at a premium. I'm not even sure he used his entire coaching salary budget. I know he was running way under but maybe used it on White.
Rhule coached on the defensive side of the ball as a young assistant
when White was playing at UCLA. And they kept in touch. I think they are friends. It's safe to call that a buddy hire because White basically said he wasn't coming here if not for trusting and loving Rhule. Luckily our coach has buddies who happen to be among the best up and coming D-coordinators in cfb.
Just gives great speeches? The guy has been so successful that people beg and throw money at him before he can ever really get established. Imagine being the assistant oline coach for the Giants in 2012 and doing so good at 2 different schools that by 2020 Carolina is throwing record money at him to get him to the NFL.
Rhule said in his interview with Benning that they were together 1 season when White was a player. Rhule clearly stated that they spoke every once in a while thru the years but weren’t exactly close.
