If you don't at least THINK you can win at Mississippi State, you're never going to be a successful head coach anywhere. In fact, you're probably never going to get the opportunity to be a head coach at a school you think you can win at.

Who would look at this statement from this guy and think, "We've gotta hire this guy yesterday!!"

Damn. That really sounds like one of those unintentional comments that Crooms would say which would prove how far in over his head he was. I don't know what went down with this guy, but I'm damn sure glad that he is still where he is.

Or the surrounding area? Specifically, what is the best private school.

Still makes Wilson a douche, but I have wondered before if that's an obstacle.

I've heard they've gone very much downhill recently, especially at the high school. I think Caledonia HS is probably the only decent public high school anywhere near Starkville.

Say what you will about Croom, but he at least said he could win at MSU, even if he caveated the 17 out of the statement. I don't think anyone in the history of mankind has ever gotten a job by saying they can't do the job, save royalty and politicians.

Caledonia may be the only "decent" high school if your measurement is black/white ratio. However, if it is curriculum, faculty, and facilities then Starkville High School is a far superior school. I happen to be a graduate of Caledonia, but it is and always has been a very rural school without a strong curriculum or faculty.

What are you talking about? I know for a fact (coming from Coach34, sarcasm intended) that Wilson was Byrne's second HR hire of the off-season just after he hit a homerun with the Petersen hire and just before he hit a homerun with the Mullen hire.

I graduated from 'The High' in '03 and it was a good school then. I'm sure most of the teachers are still around, but I've heard some of the better ones are gone now. Starkville High has been struggling with a stability problem for years, I'd say since Stan Miller left. I had 3 head principals in 4 years, and they've gone through 2 or 3 since I graduated from there.

Edit: Despite it's problems, Starkville High still has a lot to offer, as far as advanced courses, the art program, student clubs, and athletics. If I had kids, I'd send them there. It worked out pretty well for myself and most of my friends.

and I have kids in the system. As the other poster noted, there's been a lack of stability in admin at SHS, but the course offerings and special programs are still very good.

It's a public school and it has its share of issues. However, the college bound graduates are very prepared, much more so than those coming from any other area HS - public or private.

For a few weeks there, all you did was run around the board proclaiming each rumored hire to be a homerun.

Petersen accepting the job WAS indeed a HR...him getting cold feet- not so much
Mullen accepting it is a HR...so, not really sure what your point is

After hiring a RB coach from Green Bay with no success as a coordinator, it was hard for any hire not to be close to a HR

Petersen and Wilson both bought into the "coaching graveyard" tripe about MSU. Petersen after he got LOTS of advice from friends in the coaching business and Wilson, well, not sure what convinced him of this. I'm happier everyday that we got Mullen. If a guy is not convinced enough in his own capabilities to believe he can win at MSU, at least at the level that would keep MSU fans happy (6 to 8 wins in most years), then I don't want any part of him. That's not asking much of a coach who has the benefit of being an SEC member in a state with good athletes. Mullen appears truly excited to have our job and wanted it from the get go. I certainly feel more everyday that we got the right guy to elevate our program to new heights.

His saying "we can win here if..." was the same thing as saying he could never win here. Any coach who comes in saying he will compete for championships but not to expect anything for seven years should've been shitcanned during the interview process. Thanks, Lonnie.

...if Wilson comes to MSU & MSU never wins, then it's MSU's fault. Not Wilson's fault.

That way when Wilson goes looking for another job, he can tell all the A.D.'s that MSU is just a coaching graveyard & he (Wilson) was a victim of that.

The A.D's buy that line of bullcrap, Wilson gets another job, & the media continues to portray MSU as a coach's graveyard.

Meanwhile, Wilson never has to own up to the fact he was a failure @ MSU.

That's the way this coaching scam works.

He's basing his opinion on the fact it's in Starkville so it has to be terrible. Or so goes the party line.

I can't remember what school each of them went to, but we were friends at UMC. I just remember both of them on different occasions telling me that people would try to avoid Starkville High like the plague.

No details, thats just what I was told by people that lived there.

FWIW, one is a big state fan, and the other is a girl.

They're more than decent, unless you consider Madison Central, Clinton, Northwest Rankin, Ocean Springs, Tupelo and Southaven decent high schools.

it's about 30-40 minutes from Starkville, but it's a "suburb" of Columbus. I did my student teaching there. I also did some stuff for school at Starkville HS, and it was pretty good at the time- this was about 10 years ago.

I don't know why. If he had come here, I would have given him a fair shot to prove that he could do the job. He just seems like he is "entitiled"- for example turning down Iowa State. Plus, he has some absolute freaks on his offense. It's kind of hard to not be good with the talent he was given.

I was relieved when we hired Mullen over him.

I think thats "credible" enough...as if credibility was needed when talking about the merits of a HS academic program.

I never went to South Panola or Murrah or Jim Hill, but I know their academics suck. Does the fact that I didn't go there make the fact that their academics suck any less credible? Jeebus..

Provine, Murrah, Watts.... "They" all go there. No need for distinction.
