Lots of fuss being made over Clark's WNBA salary

The Seattle Storm just valued at $151M. So money is rolling in, even with running in the red.
Well thought out post. On this particular point, something to think about: Professional sports franchises of any kind are EXTREMELY scarce on a global scale. Wealthy people and the sanctioning bodies are betting on asset value increases driven by scarcity over a long period of time and weathering losses if necessary in the intermediate term. It's all part of the calculus

Beyond the economic scarcity argument, there also a network effect argument. Becoming an owner gives you commonality and access with some of the most powerful people and organizations on earth and associated entry points to other valuable endeavors.

Bets on women's sports also make logical sense. 50% of the population, changing demographics and tastes, dovetailing with public policy, etc

Internet 🌽 is free because it's ubiquitous. Sports ownership is 💸 because it's rarer than almost anything.

Just saw a post on Twitter. 20 points, 5/15 from the field, 10 turnovers. Rough start. I'm sure she'll get better. At least the WNBA better hope she does.

Seems like most of the WNBA players hope she fails.
I'm sure they have Clark fatigue, but she's supposedly the best chance the league has to become viable, so they should root for her. Unfortunately for the WNBA, Clark's first game was only the most watched WNBA game since 2001. With the all-out hype train that's been behind Clark, her first game should have blown WNBA viewership records out of the water. That has to be a bit concerning for them.

Be honest. Who knew the WNBA had been around that long?

Twitter is abuzz with folks absolutely aghast at Clark's salary, which will pay her around $76K next year. Gender pay gap is trending now. Many male athletes have also chimed in to deride the pay gap between WNBA players and NBA players, with some pointing to the rookie salary for 2023 #1 pick Wembanyama which dwarfs Clark's (that's an understatement). He will make almost double in one game what she will make her whole rookie season.

Obviously Clark is going to clean up with endorsement deal, so she's gonna be just fine financially.

It seems too obvious to have to point out, but the WNBA is a money pit, basically a charity outreach by the NBA at this point. It loses in the neighborhood of $10 million annually. Whatever one may think of girls basketball, the WNBA is simply not financially viable. It would have never made it past it's first season if the NBA didn't have money to burn, quite literally. WNBA players are lucky they are paid ANYTHING.

It's just such a ludicrous complaint.
Reasons for the wide pay disparity between the WNBA and the NBA are many, but basically, the women's league generates far less money. That's reflected in its TV rights deal, which is worth $65 million versus the NBA's $2.8 billion contract. It also plays 42 fewer games a season than the NBA.

Another subpar performance in her 2nd game. Definitely not the start the WNBA was hoping for. It'll be interesting to see how long the crowd numbers stay up if she's not putting up video game numbers. I'm sure she'll settle in eventually, but it's not the instant success many were counting on.

Thinking people would know that such is not realistic.

When the Giants called up Willie Mays from their AAA farm team in 1951, it took several games before he got a hit.
