I went to a Hardcore/death metal show at a tandem bar in Albany, one called Pauly's Hotel and the bar next door called The Lowbeat.

When you're standing 5 feet from the stage in a bar, and its possibly the loudest genre of music, nothing is louder. No other concert came close. I wore ear plugs after a few minutes and by that time the concert just sounded like white noise. Couldn't hear for 3-4 days after that.

I dont know how those bands can play that music and not go deaf (but I guess they do).

Rare Earth. Kentucky State Fair. 1970 something (1974?). I was young but it felt like my ears were bleeding. First exposure to concert level loudness.

Only been to 3 concerts in my life and all from the same singer, Elton John. Twice in Germany (Frankfort late 70's, Wiesbaden middle 80's) and once in Nashville early 80's. Not sure which one was loudest.

Ringing in ears is really loud but not from the concerts. 20 years in the Artillery will do that to you too.

It would be a coin flip between Ted Nugent around '78 or Page and Plant mid '90s.

Tinnitus is from repeated loud shows thru my life.

Bizarrely, Hank III at Lynaugh’s.

He did one set that was stone-cold country, his dad and granddad’s stuff, Johnny Cash, Merle Haggard, etc., to go along with his own material. Great show. Loved it.

They took an intermission and he told the crowd this second set may not be for you, we call it Hillbilly Heavy Metal. Now’s the time to leave if you don’t think it’s for you. I was curious, so I hung around. About 3-4 songs into it, I seriously thought I was going to have permanent hearing damage. My ears had muffled ringing for a couple of days.

ZZ Top, 1977, Cincinnati Riverfront Coliseum. Surprised that I'm not deaf. It was so loud that I could feel every bass note rattle my ribcage. My ears rang for the next 24 hours afterwards.

Second was likely Ted Nugent. Saw him in Denver in 1978.

These stand out among the 70+ shows I have seen....

Molly Hatchett/Blackfoot/38 Special at Rupp in '80.
The Who at Rupp in '82
Gary Clark Jr at Beacon Theater in '19

Did Blackfoot open for them? I saw them in Johnson City, TN that year. Yeah, that was damn loud.

Similar, I saw Dwight Yoakam at EKU Arts center a few years and although he was great, he could have turned the volume down by 30% and it would still have been pretty damn loud.

I saw The Who twice, and cannot honestly say they were any louder than a lot of shows I have been to. I also saw Pearl Jam 20 years ago or so, but by then, think I was wearing ear plugs. Was a great show, FWIW.

This one is an easy, no-brainer, for me:
CREED at Riverbend Music Center on 08/26/2002, with Jerry Cantrell from Alice in Chains opening.
We were down pretty close in Section 400 and I thought my heart was going to stop beating, as you could feel the bass pounding your chest.
There were a number of semi-trailers there just to bring in the MOUNTAIN of speakers that lined and covered the front side-walls of the stage.
The decibel level was pretty ridiculous and unnecessary. No other concert, and I've been to hundreds, comes close to that one.

Atari Teenage Riot opened for Wu Tang Clan and Rage Against the Machine in the mid-late 90s, and I still maintain there was something wrong with the speaker that was right beside us. The shrill noise coming out of it during their show was louder than anything I've ever heard.

Funny Alice in Chains story. I went to the Vogue in Louisville if anyone remembers that to see Iggy Pop. They opened for him and about a month later Man in the Box was everywhere.

IIRC
VHS or Beta
The Dame
August 2003

Couldn't hear much for at least a day. Had to turn up the volume on my phone at work even.
Music was good, but I don't remember much besides my date.

Mine was probably the combination of back-to-back shows back in 1991...Slayer/Testament on Friday by myself at the old Cincinnati Gardens...followed that up the next night with ZZ Top/Black Crowes with my dad at the Riverfront Coliseum.

That Slayer show was probably the most crazy scene of any concert i've been to (well over 100 in the last 35+yrs). They had chairs set up on the floor and by the end of the show, it looked like a tornado had gone through. Not sure whose bright idea it was to have chairs on the floor at a 1991 peak level Slayer show!

The Meatloaf concert I saw was the last of 3 nights in a row but the first 2 were Elton John. That was a good weekend.

I was at that show. They had a brief run and were pretty good. The loudest show for me at The Dame was Blue Cheer. I loved The Dame and miss it.

Probably have to be Ted Nugent/Aerosmith '86 Tour or perhaps AC/DC '88. Hard to say since all the hard rock/metal acts were extremely loud in those days.
1988 ACDC with Cinderella opening in Rupp.

Of course UK lost to Alabama in football that day in the most UK way possible. My buddy and I decided drinking two boda bags full of schnapps (It was first semester Freshmen year and I was not fully indoctrinated into bourbon yet) at the game would be a good idea.

Grabbed a sub at the Blazer express between the game and concert, which I only rented for about a half hour. Passed out and then was woken up with the worst hangover to head to the show. "For Those About to Rock" almost ended it for me.

Fire!

I use these now. I don't notice a difference in the sound but I don't know if it helps either.
These are good. As a bar band guitarist, I used these for a few years until I invested in a custom set of earplugs.

I was also at that Kiss and AC/DC sow in Freedom Hall, one of my favorite shows.

I will second Dwight Yoakham, saw him at The Palace and it was ear splitting, was not expecting that.

AC/DC held the top spot for me for a long time. Saw them on the Razors Edge tour at Freedom Hall my ears were hurting about three songs in. But Primus in 2019 at the YUM was the loudest. It felt like my ear was right against the speaker.
