The #3 ranked Louisville Field Hockey squad downed UConn yesterday 1-0 to advance out of the NCAA quarterfinals to the Final Four.

Alli Bitting delivered the lone goal of the match in the first quarter, following up a Mercedes Pastor penalty corner attempt with a tap in off a blocked shot.

Sam Minrath (Christian Academy) had five saves against the Huskies attack. Louisville advances to face Michigan on Friday May 7th in Chapel Hill, NC. The other two Final Four squads are #1 UNC and #4 Iowa.

Justine Sowry's post-game remarks:

"The entire year has been a very long season -- two seasons. We've had some highs and lows. We've had some tears and certainly some laughter and fun along the way. And to get to the point where we are, we're pretty excited and relieved. The team is excited to get another matchup against Michigan, a quality opponent. We're going to celebrate, and then get back to business tomorrow morning."

ESPNU - I think.
The NCAA is indicating that the semifinals will be on-line at ESPN3. The championship game is scheduled for ESPNU. This could obviously change as Friday draws nearer, but, as for now -- Iowa and UNC will play Friday at 1 p.m. and the Cards vs Michigan about a half-hour after the completion of the first game.

Michigan went 14-2, with losses to Northwestern and Iowa -- all three made the NCAA Tournament. They did not venture out of the BiG 10 for any games. The ACC got just two teams in the 12-team Championships -- the Cards and Tar Heels.

Louisville was 14-5 in the split season and did play a few non-conference games.

Alli Bitting and head coach Justine Sowry are scheduled for a 1 p.m. presser today (Tuesday) and I'll try to post it here Wednesday. Bitting is one of just three seniors on the Cards squad and had the winner against UConn to get Louisville to the Final Four.
